September 2016

Dear Fellow Deans,

Greetings from Garden City, New York!

The start of a new academic year is hectic and exhilarating, especially when the student numbers—freshmen, transfers, international students—are all up. And we were ready for them. Below, I share a few start-of-the-semester news items here on campus; they are probably similar to your news.

Matriculation Ceremony Starts New Academic Year
The largest-ever class of entering students in the University’s 120-year history was welcomed with great fanfare. Marc Strachan 81 (marketing), vice president of corporate relations and constituent affairs, Diageo North America, delivered the Matriculation Day address. Andrew Jacobsen, an entering finance freshman, presented the Honor Code to the students.

New Faculty Members Join College
A new academic year usually means new faculty joining the ranks. With us starting this fall are Jiaxin Liu, Ph.D., assistant professor of accounting, and Laura Messano, lecturer in business communications. The School now has 43 full-time faculty members.

Welcome Back Barbecue!
All business students, faculty and staff enjoyed hearty barbecue fare on the beautiful lawns adjoining the Hagedorn Hall of Enterprise, our home, on a late summer afternoon. The event provided the entire Willumstad family the opportunity to celebrate the start of the new school year in an informal social setting.
