ALICE WALKER: BEATUY IN TRUTH

Greetings!

Welcome to our FOURTH Beauty In Truth newsletter. We've reached 2 milestones this week - we're a month into the campaign and we've raised over $10,000! We couldn't have done it without your help. Just as it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a community to transform a dream to a film. We're excited to see our family of supporters grow and grow. This week I'd like to share some of the challenges with you, as well as the successes.

A PEOPLE'S FILM
OVERCOMING
CREATING WAVES
A PEOPLE'S FILM

All over the world people are coming together to say no to the injustices of capitalism - the Occupy movement has taken hold of over 900 cities, from Berlin to Santiago. A new generation are realising that the power truly does lie with the people.

Alice Walker: Beauty In Truth brings into the world a powerful story of a woman whose life and art has had major impact on social justice movements of the last 40 years. We see our film as an offering to the world so that people - especially young women and girls - are empowered to create a brighter, hopeful global future...

What has been wonderful to witness is the way people have come together - just as in protests across the world - to show their support. YOU - our friends and donors - have passed the link on to many of your friends and family. We would love your continual support so please pledge to raise $100, $250, $500, $1000 or more from your networks and become our Angel Ambassadors. And let us know if your contacts donate so we know the donation is coming via you.

Crowd funding is a democratic and legitimate way to support the arts... especially arts that contribute to social action and change. This is what I have come to understand and it has helped me to go beyond my initial reluctance to ask people for money.

OVERCOMING

I was encouraged when I read about filmmaker Jennifer Fox, who raised $150k through crowd funding. She had started with the same $50k goal as us and  gone on to triple her target!  She said: "Every step of the way on this journey, I had to go beyond my comfort zone to publicly ask for money: on the web, in emails, in person, on stage - over and over again. At every point, I had to push through my reticence, fear and a general "I just don't want to do it again!" attitude. Facing these inner demons is necessary if you are going do this type of campaign. Believe me, crowd-funding certainly pushes those buttons, but it also requires you to let go and not listen to your ego so much."

CREATING WAVES
Alice Walker
One month into the campaign I am still battling my inner demons and pushing myself beyond my limits when writing emails to friends and potential donors. Overcoming my cultural upbringing where family pride meant you'd rather go hungry than have dinner at your friend's house is all part of my rapid growth in the last month. So I am glad for this opportunity to grow and develop my skills as a fundraiser for something that I passionately believe in. I make films to make a difference in the world, however small that may be but I believe that ripples can create waves and waves can create powerful tsunamis of hope and enlightenment.

  3. SPEAK: to your specific network of people and get them excited about the film
