A Few Thoughts from Ed:

I guess it is safe to say that summer is here. It has been nice to be home for a few weeks...but soon the travel begins again.  The travel gets old no matter how much you love what you are doing. I am sure it won't be long before Peggy says "don't you have a trip coming up".

Of course the benefit of being home for a while is that I will be able to work more closely with our team to continue to tweak and improve on who and what we are as a company. I cannot say enough about our awesome staff led every day by Deb Behary. We have so many great employees and we realize we are not perfect but I can honestly say we are all working towards the same goal of meeting our mantra "Better product, Better service, Better experience".

Not only is our staff awesome but so are our members and guests.  With our upcoming work day just around the corner I am overwhelmed by the response of so many of you volunteering to help us out on this traditional day of major fix-up and cleaning.  Thank you for sharing your time with us.  We will be sure to create another photo montage of the day's activities and post it in our entry way.

You may have noticed the merchandise moving around the store and displays changing. This is a result of our staff taking ownership of their product sections. They are working at creating better merchandise displays and tweaking the offerings to better match your needs.

We have an unmatched offering of AR parts and accessories as well as the area's best selection of precision rifle products. Everything from Scopes, Kestrels, Mildot cards and all the related gear can be found in our facility. We are actively seeking your input to guide us in our attempt to complete our product offerings.

In addition to the retail efforts, we continue to evaluate and modify our training. I am particularly excited about how well received our Retake Only Defensive Handgun I program has been.  From my perspective, I love it. There is no classroom time and the teaching is all on the range. The coach shooter format allows for an awesome learning environment and the shooting drills progress very smoothly. Remember, this is particularly important to me as much of our training skill sets are advanced and require repetition to perfect.

I am committed to always allow our students to retake any class completed forever for free. I don't know how to better show our commitment to your training. I know that no one provides a more comprehensive and realistic training program than we do. Training is at the core of our identity. We will never compromise our training and the business end of our mission will never drive our training commitment.

Speaking of training, with the weather improving allowing for outdoor shooting, I have started to get the "I want to become a firearms instructor" call. I ask these callers why do you want to be an instructor and their response to a person has been "everyone wants a CCW permit so it is a great way to make extra money". Buyer beware. Don't get me wrong, we need all the quality instructors we can get throughout this great country. However, this must be kept in context. It is a quality not quantity issue for me. Everywhere I go across the country I run into instructors who are people who have read a book and then go out and teach.

Unfortunately, I see this even in the great Northwest. It takes so much more to be a quality instructor and or offer a quality training program.

Be Safe...ed

Notes from Peggy:

Happy Mother's Day this Sunday.  Mother's shoot free on Sunday.

It is our right and privilege to Vote in this great country of ours.  Don't forget to vote in Idaho on May 15th!  Our primaries are very important!

We're looking for volunteers for our annual Work Day...see box below.  We'll feed you if you're willing to loan us your time and expertise....thanking you in
advance!

Save the date!  August 11th...9am-2pm....Customer Appreciation Day!  Giving away 5 guns!!!

If our monthly newsletter is not enough for you....Like us on Facebook and receive more current updates.

A reminder of our retake policy:
At Center Target Sports if you've paid for and taken a class, you can retake it again forever for free.
To sign up as a retake you MUST call to get on the list. You will be notified the day before the class if there is a seat for you.
If you are a confirmed retake 24 hours before the class and you no show for the class, you will no longer be able to retake that class for free.

Thank you to all of you that continue to support our women's shelter in Post Falls by bringing in toiletries (and blankets) and used phones.  We and they really appreciate it!

Be Safe....

Consignment Corner

Welcome to the consignment corner.  Rather than list specific guns we have in our consignment section I want to explain the accessories aspect to some consignment guns.

We are unable to display or list many of the accessories that are often included with our consignment guns.   Items such as extra magazine (sometime 7 or 8 extra mags) holsters, tools, storage containers, ammunition, etc.

All of these extras add up to the overall value of the sale.  Imagine buying a $500.00 handgun that also has with it six $60.00 mags, that's quite a savings all for $500.00.

ASK THE STAFF ABOUT EXTRAS

We have developed such a great reputation with respect to our consignment firearms that many of you come in and ask about our stock every week.

  If you're interested, don't wait!

firing line More about our Prerequisite Tests

The prerequisite skills test are alive and well.  Thank you for your support and assistance in getting this process off the ground.  Our ultimate goal is to balance the student experience and make the classes as comprehensive as possible.

We have received a number of questions about taking the test without being in a class.  Of course it is our intent to offer the test for the next higher level class during the lower level or prerequisite class.  It is important for you to know that you can (with prior coordination) take the prerequisite skills test. Please be aware that you can call the range and set up an appointment with an instructor to take the skills test outside of class hours.  208-773-2331.

If you pass the test your records will be noted and you will be clear to enroll in the next level class.

Proficiency tests are now REQUIRED to enroll in Defensive HG 1 and Defensive HG 2....even if you took your class years ago.  No proficiency test is needed to retake a class you've already attended.

Hope this helps everyone understand the process.

Draw From Holster and Rapid Fire Opportunity

surelockThe next sessions are May 21, June 4, 18 from 9am to 11am. We are going to commit two Monday mornings a month and bring in a dedicated staff member (RSO) to start.  If the demand grows we will extend the opportunities.

So this is how it is going to work.  The time allotted will be between 0900 and 1100.  Because we are bringing in a staff person during non operational hours the doors will open at 0850 and will be locked at 0900.  No one will be admitted after 0900.The shooting will be FREE to members and non-members will be charged $5.00 cash only as the registers will not be open.

If you've taken Def HG 2 or higher here at Center Target Sports and are interested in
an open shooting session to practice those skills this is the perfect opportunity to participate in this fun activity.  Shooters are reminded that CTS will not be providing any instruction during this activity and this is why all participants must be vetted by their completion of Def HG II.

Save the Date!            Save the Date!

Our 7th Annual Customer Appreciation Day
For Our Community...
August 11th,  9-2

This year's community event promises to be bigger and better than ever.  This FREE
event is all about our customers and the community.  We will give away at least 5 firearms.  We will collect food for the Post Falls Food Bank, Toys for Tots, and Blood
for the Inland Northwest Blood Bank.

With all of the bad press responsible gun owners get these days, it is nice to have a solid showing at an event benefiting worthy causes in our own community unrelated to the industry. Please help us show that OUR gun community is a caring, compassionate, responsible group of citizens!

In preparation we have already exceeded last year's number of vendors, special
activities and entertainers that will be participating to make all of Post Falls and the Shooting Community proud.

The pictures included in this article are from last year's event.  This year we're hosting a live broadcast from K102 with morning DJ Derik Walker on site.

In our record year you may remember that in 5 hours time we collected (thanks to our shooting community) 14,500 lbs of food for the Post Falls food bank, 4 totes of toys for Toys for Tots and 96 units of blood for the blood bank.

Now is the time to set a NEW RECORD!!!

DERIK WALKER LIVE

It is our goal to surpass all those totals. We promise to do our part.  We will giveaway at least 5 firearms and hundreds of other prizes.  Watch for more specific information in our special email blast coming next month.

Again this year instead of one ticket per food item we're giving one ticket for each pound of food you bring or for each toy.  Each ticket is a chance to win a gun or one of hundreds of other prizes.  No need to be present to win the guns, but you must be present at 2:30pm to win any of the other awesome prizes.

3 Bloodmobiles again this year.....

Time to Sign Up For Blood Donation

Don't miss the most comprehensive Carbine class offered in the Northwest.  This is a newly modified version of our very popular course.  We will offer this advanced program this summer on June 23 at
Fernan Rod and Gun Club Outdoor range.   We are blessed to have such an awesome facility available to us here in North Idaho.

This class is less than 1 hr of classroom and approximately 7 hrs of shooting on the range. We will pick up where we left off at the end of Basic Carbine and move into a comprehensive format covering carbine and also handgun transitions.

Please make sure you check out the list of required equipment prior to registering for this class.

All students must have completed the CTS Basic Carbine class.

Defensive Handgun 2 - May 26

This is an 8 hour course limited to 10 students. The primary goal of this course is to develop the defensive handgun and personal skills necessary to not only survive but control a lethal encounter. This course builds on the skills and theories presented in CTS-201. Students will learn and practice the skills, and attitude essential to surviving a lethal threat or confrontation.

The course will include both classroom presentations and live fire range exercises. A combination of Dry Practice and Live Fire with Real World Scenarios including multiple threats, low light shooting, hostage rescue, wounded shooter drills, equipment malfunctions, and moving targets. This course will conclude with a Course Review and Examination. attack

All instruction materials, range time, and targets are provided by Center Target Sports. The student is required to provide a handgun, two magazines or speed loaders, eye and ear protection, flashlight or weapons mounted light, a billed baseball type cap, 250 rounds of ammunition, and a strong side holster.

Reminder this is a prerequisite for the 2 day Tactical Pistol class and the potential special open shooting session discussed above.

***You must pass the proficiency test to enroll in this class by taking and testing in Def HG 1 or Def HG 1 retakes only, or by scheduling an appointment at CTS.

Comprehensive Handgun (4 days)
June 12-15

So many of you have said that 5 days off of work was too much.  So we have consolidated the course to 4 days.

We  have not cut anything out of the class.  I have just adjusted the presentation.  I have learned a lot about this class since I wrote it many years ago and this new format will allow me to adjust accordingly.

We will still see improvements like in the pic to the right.  The target on the left is Student A on day one and the target on the right is the same student Day 4.

Register early as this class will fill.

Home Defense Shotgun - June 30

woman shotgun

In addition to learning the shotguns attributes, this course will teach you the shotgun's limitations. The student will be introduced to Close Range Engagement Techniques (CRET), reality based scenarios, and 360 degree coverage.

A combination of lecture, demonstrations, and live fire exercises will be used to teach the proper deployment of the shotgun from point blank to distances out to 25 yards.
All instruction materials, range time, and targets are provided by Center Target Sports.

Students must provide the following:
eye and ear protection
Semi-auto or pump action shotgun
Weapons mounted Flashlight(optional)

Refuse to be a Victim - June 13 (daytime) 12-4pm

Safety experts agree the single most important step toward ensuring your personal safety is making the conscious decision to Refuse To Be A Victim®. You stand a much better chance of preventing criminal attack if you develop a safety plan before you need it. That is why Center Target Sports is offering the National Rifle Association's Refuse To Be A Victim® crime prevention seminar.

Refuse To Be A Victim® is a four hour crime prevention seminar, designed to provide common sense information geared toward awareness and avoidance of criminal attack. Seminar participants are presented with a variety of common sense crime prevention strategies they may integrate into their daily lives. Participants will better understand criminal thinking and will be provided tips on maximizing home, travel, automobile, telephone, technological, and personal safety. There are no firearms in this class. There are no pre-requisites for this class.

Are you a student home for the summer?  Now is the time for this class.

The cost of this course is $20.00 and all the proceeds go to the Post Falls Woman's Shelter (OASIS).

Since this class tuition all goes to charity this is the only class CTS offers that does not offer a free retake.

This Month's Shooting/Safety Tip

Intimidation is often the Criminal's Weapon of Choice

It is an accepted belief that the crime of rape is actually an "act of aggression and violence, motivated primarily by power or anger, rather than by sexuality."

We are now beginning to recognize that most street crimes are also driven by the pursuit of power. All of us seek power in one form or another. The problem is, power can be used responsibly or irresponsibly. Criminals crave power and will do virtually anything to have it. They believe other people and their property exists for their benefit. The guy who today sticks a knife in your face and demands money is the same guy that stole your milk, or lunch money back in grade school. Most crimes of violence are crimes of opportunity. I want you to limit those opportunities.

Criminals use weapons of many forms.

He will often use deception to catch people off guard. His secrecy gives him a great advantage and provides him a sense of power. Intimidation is another often used weapon by the criminal. His domineering manner may be so menacing that he need never utter a threat, raise his voice, or clench his fist. Other times, a display of anger accomplishes his purpose. The outburst is usually carefully orchestrated, expertly timed and displayed dramatically.

The criminal wants to dominate his victim and will often resort to violence as a last resort. His self-image is at stake. He expects you to comply with his commands. So, he gives you an order (give me your wallet) and he expects and waits for you to comply. If he wanted to hurt you, he would simply walk up to you and attack you without warning. But this is typically not what happens.

Raise Your Level of Awareness!

I believe that raising your level of awareness is the single most effective way to keep yourself and those around you safe. Col. Jeff Cooper developed the Combat Mind set Color Code System. Although others have added colors and applied additional theories to Col. Cooper's original 4 color format, I believe in keeping it simple. If four colors were good enough for Cooper, they are good enough for me. Take a second to note the colors and associated mind set listed below.
  • White - Unaware and unprepared
  • Yellow - Relaxed alert. No specific threat situation
  • Orange - Specific alert. Something is not quite right and has gotten your attention
  • Red - Fight Mode. Your mental trigger has been tripped (established back in Condition Orange). You take appropriate action.
Ideally, you should go about your day in Condition Yellow. Being alert gives you the edge. As we have said time after time, "Action beats Reaction every time". I don't care how fast you are with whatever weapon system you choose. If your first indication you are in trouble is the contact with the criminal on his terms, you have an uphill battle ahead.

Learn and train yourself to trust your instincts.

If it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. Don't blow it off. A recent student of mine and his girlfriend were confronted by 3 knife wielding would be robbers in Spokane Valley last month. As he explained the incident to Peggy and I, he credited his heightened state of awareness that allowed him to get his semiautomatic CCW out of the holster and into the situation without having to fire a shot, directly attributed to the class he took at Center Target. His ability to recognize the situation they were in kept them from being robbed or worse.

When you observe criminal behavior or a perceived threat, get away if you can. If that doesn't work and you are victimized, a plan of action and speed in execution may be your salvation. When he says "This is a stick up" he must wait for you to comply. It is during this critical time that you must act. If you are going to run, run. If you are willing and able to fight, fight and WIN....
