A Few Thoughts from Ed:

Happy New Year....
I can't believe it is 2018 already.  I was looking forward to not traveling for the first few weeks of the new year (especially since I promised Peggy that I would slow my travel down this year) but Jan 1st I found myself on a plane to Ohio for a new case.  Of course as I was investigating the outdoor facility it was only the coldest day on record for the last 115 years.   Welcome to 2018!!

That being said we are so excited for this new year and what it has to offer.  Given the current political climate the retail gun business is very soft.  This is a cyclic business and the current retail situation comes as no surprise.  What we are most proud of is the interest in training continues to grow.  Training is so important and it is what CTS is all about.

There are many in this industry across the country who are hanging a shingle and conducting training.  The consumer is often confused by what is being offered and by who is teaching. I believe facilities such as ours rise to the top in this environment.  When the consumer takes the time to evaluate their training opportunities both parties win.

As you are considering enrollment into any training program or course in any discipline from firearms to cooking you should be looking for the same things.  Is the facility genuinely teaching comprehensive courses full of proven techniques?  Are they committed to the training mission or look at it merely as a revenue source?  Do they participate in the community and regularly give back to the community?  Are they offering the students an opportunity to repeat their training for FREE?  Are the instructors experienced in teaching and coaching?

I am a strong believer in taking classes from multiple quality instructors.  Again, everyone wins in this environment.  The problem is that all instructors are not created equal and all training programs are not the same.  Many training programs limit their classes and students to basic firearm manipulations yet still call the class an advanced class.   You know they never would think of allowing you to off hand drawing and shooting, shooting from your back or side, drawing from an appendix  or pocket carry.  With these types of limitations, what are they really teaching and are they truly committed to the student?  Please be careful before you jump on a plane  or drive down the street to take a class just because of a slick magazine ad or a great sales pitch.

Another bright spot in the new year is Master Gunsmith Daniel Blake.  Wow did we hit a home run when he joined our family.  If you have not met Daniel, stop in and do so.  He has completely turned our gunsmithing service into something special.

Our entire staff joins Peggy and I in wishing you all a very happy, healthy and prosperous New year!

Be Safe...ed

Notes from Peggy:

A reminder we will be closed Jan 8th for inventory.

We will be open regular hours 10-7 on Martin Luther King day!

All students signing up for Def HG 1 or 2 must now complete a qualifications test.  This takes about 3-5 minutes and is done in the Basic Pistol class or Def HG 1 or Def HG 1 retakes only class.  If you wish to skip those classes, or took the class before this requirement was in place, please call the range to set an appt for the qualification.  208-773-2331.

If our monthly newsletter is not enough for you....Like us on Facebook and receive more current updates.

Reminder that we short the website spots in every class so we don't overbook
our classes. Call to make sure the class you want is truly full. Also, you must call the range to sign up to retake a scheduled class...we don't check emails for re-take status, only newly paid customers.
A reminder that if you no-show as a retake...you lose that status and will have to pay to take the class again

Thank you to all of you that continue to support our women's shelter in Post Falls by bringing in toiletries and used phones.  We and they really appreciate it!

Be Safe....

Consignment Corner

Welcome to the consignment corner.  Rather than list specific guns we have in our consignment section I want to explain the accessories aspect to some consignment guns.

We are unable to display or list many of the accessories that are often included with our consignment guns.   Items such as extra magazine (sometime 7 or 8 extra mags) holsters, tools, storage containers, ammunition, etc.

All of these extras ad up to the overall value of the sale.  Imaging buying a $500.00 handgun that also has with it six $60.00 mags, that's quite a saving all for $500.00.

ASK THE STAFF ABOUT EXTRAS

We have developed such a great reputation with respect to our consignment firearms that many of you come in and ask about our stock every week.

  If you're interested, don't wait!

A message to our advanced students:

Note:  Last month we only received responses from 10 people about this new opportunity.  It seemed like more people would be interested.  We will ask one more time for your interest level.

We will make a decision on this offer this month based on your response/interest level in participation.  If interested, please send Peggy an email.

If you've taken Def HG 2 or higher here at Center Target Sports and are interested in  an open shooting session to practice those skills for a small cost after hours, please email Peggy and let us know.

We're looking at possible opening Sunday night or Monday am specifically for this purpose if enough interest is expressed.

gssf

The first cycle of shooting with the new classifications is completed, and from the sounds of the shooters, it looks like this not only a success but more enjoyable too. In the Pocket Glock classification we had two shooters with 250 point rounds and were awarded the first patches for that achievement. We had people shooting in all three classifications and doing well in all three. This has definitely added more opportunities to show your talents and to have bragging rights among your friends. We hope that you bring more friends with you and introduce more people to the pleasure of GSSF. We had one shooter each in the Ladies and Junior classifications this round. We heard a number of people saying that the lady or junior in their life would benefit from shooting the matches, so please bring them along to share the fun with us each month.

We will be starting a new round on January 20th, and with the first three month series giving us the chance to work out any glitches, we will be hitting the ground running. As we get more shooters we have found ways to make the process smoother and look to make your experience even friendlier. (But, as you know I was looking for entertainment while we were scoring targets, so anyone with singing or dancing talent please let us know and we will use your skills .)

The weather the next few months is not conducive to being outside, at least for us warm weather folks, so come on in and enjoy the warmth on the range as you shoot GSSF and earn your bragging rights.

Tips from our Gunsmith Daniel

Over the years I have been asked about firearm coatings many times. This is particularly true coming down here from Alaska. I lived on a small remote island surrounded by salt water and if that wasn't bad enough, it was also a rain forest. It rained an average close to 99 inches per year. The US average rainfall being only 39 inches. So, needless to say, rust on firearms was a big concern for my customers.

There are many various firearm coatings on the market today. It can really be a daunting task to try and make an intelligent choice of which one is best for your gun with the environment that you live in. As a gunsmith I have spent hours researching and testing various coatings myself. I have found Cerekote to perform head and shoulders above any others I have tested.

What is Cerekote?

Cerekote is NOT a paint. It is a polymer-ceramic coating that when applied correctly and baked on a firearm effectively seals out salt, chemicals and environmental factors that cause rusting. It comes in a variety of colors (including Hot Pink) and can be applied over pretty much anything to include polymer frames, wood stocks, stainless steel, etc. In addition to that, it just plain looks good! Cerekote's web site boasts the following statistics:

1)     Exceeds 9h scratch & gouge hardness factors
2)     Taber abrasion greater than 8,000 wear cycles per mil
3)     Corrosion resistance of more than 3,000 hours
4)     Direct impact resistance of 160 inch lbs.
5)     Coefficient of friction rivaling Teflon at 0.11 (steady state dynamic coefficient of friction under load)
6)     Extremely high chemical resistance

ASTM International conducted head-to-head corrosion tests of eight popular firearm coatings, Cerekote being one of them. They placed the same firearm part (in this case it was an AR bolt), in a salt chamber. Each one had been factory coated with a different firearm coating. The temperature was set to 95 degrees F with a salt concentration of 5%. A time lapse camera was then set up and the test begun. After just 24 hours the blued and stainless steel bolt began showing visible signs of corrosion. After 48 hours the bolts coated with NIBX, Ionbound, Failzero, Phosphate and KG Gun Kote all showed visible signs of corrosion. After 172 hours the Durocoat bolt fell to the corrosion monster.
At 2034 hours the test was finally concluded. The Cerekote bolt still had not displayed any visible signs of corrosion.

In my opinion this test speaks volumes as to which coating is the best! I have applied Cerekote to over 50 different firearms and have yet to have a complaint about its quality or durability. It simply is the best bang for your buck and we offer it here at Center Target Sports. I would be more than happy to speak to anyone considering Cerekote application for your firearm.

This Month's Shooting/Safety Tip

With so many burglaries happening in our community recently I thought I would discuss some points that may help you stay a bit safer in your home.

Tips for preventing burglars from picking your home! burglar

Today communities across America look for ways to more effectively fight crime. Burglary is on the rise everywhere. Let's focus our attention this month on residential burglaries. Who are the burglars, how do they pick their targets, how do they plan and execute the crime?  Are we helpless? No we are not!

Most residential burglars are young, male and in need of quick cash. They regard the money they steal or the fruits of their labor as an immediate solution to all their problems. To many, burglary is a matter of day-to-day survival.

A small percentage of burglaries are actually "opportunities too good to pass up"... the garage door left open or the unattended car left running.   It has been said that over 50% of all burglaries are committed by people who need money for drugs.

Why burglary versus armed robbery or mugging? A well planned and executed burglary has a limited amount of danger but, offers a very high probability of success with very low risk of confrontation or capture. An experienced burglar will never meet his victims during the crime. If caught later by the police, there usually are no eyewitnesses who can make a positive identification.

Contrary to popular belief, potential targets for burglary are becoming fairly limited. As stated earlier, most burglars are driven by the need for fast cash. However they must balance this need for speed with caution. About 90% of the time burglars have selected a residence before setting out to commit the crime.

Most burglars are unwilling to break into a residence without knowing something about the people and the valuables it may contain. Picking a potential target requires reliable information that is most often obtained by; knowing the occupants, by getting a tip from a mutual acquaintance, or by observation.

We must understand our home might be burglarized by someone we know. In fact more than one in five burglaries are committed by known offenders even if they were only casual acquaintances.

Paid tipsters are another source of information to the burglar. They often include repairmen, cable/satellite or telephone installers, and delivery men. Homes are chosen through observation because, judging from the exterior, they appear to have cash and other valuables worth stealing. Visual cues such as the size of the house, manicured landscape, and expensive cars all give the perception of money.

Understanding the who, why and how elements of the crime, provides us insight into prevention. What can we do? Well, be careful who you let in your home. Accept deliveries at the front door.   Limit the access of any service workers to your home. On trash day, cut up boxes that indicate new purchases of expensive items. Keep circumstances of your travel or vacation plans on a need to know basis. Don't flaunt your wealth. Don't give your home address or phone number to strangers.  Light the outside of your house at night.

Don't make yourself an easy or tempting target. Your home is your castle - protect it.
