A Few Thoughts from Ed:

As expected, January is off with a bang and actually is just about behind us. I love this time of year and all the activity that spikes in the range this time of year. Deb continues to looks for the trending industry products and our team continues to offer the best customer service in the Northwest.

Our classes are continuing to fill and I am so appreciative of that. We are always focused on the quality of training and it is very rewarding to see classes so well attended. The number of out of state students continues to surprise me, especially since we don't advertise out of the CDA area. T o have students drive from MT, UT and Canada or fly in from the East coast to CTS for training is so appreciated.

Our rental counter selection continues to grow along with the demand for our Try Before You Buy policy. We are constantly adding additional handguns to the rental case. These are some of the newest and most difficult handguns to find like the Glock Gen 5 model 19. Be sure to check out the gun rental counter next time you're in. Remember, members get gun rentals for free!

If you have younger shooters in your family we now have the "Ian" platform available for you to use. The platform was inspired by a young man named Ian who is tall enough for our range but a bit too short to shoot over the shooter's bench. I built the platform so younger shooters will have a safe and stable place to enjoy the experience of shooting. Just ask one of our employees to help you move it into your stall if you have a youngster who needs a little extra height.

Happy Valentine's Day to all of you!

All students signing up for Def HG 1 or 2 must now complete a qualifications test. This takes about 3-5 minutes and is done in the Basic Pistol class or Def HG 1 or Def HG 1 retakes only class. If you wish to skip those classes, or took the class before this requirement was in place, please call the range to set an appt for the qualification. 208-773-2331.

If a class you're interested in is not on the schedule, please let us know by going to the website and clicking on the class and sending us an "interested in" email. It's because of the number of emails we receive that classes are placed on the calendar.

Prerequisite Tests Are Working

The prerequisite skills test are alive and well. Thank you for your support and assistance in getting this process off the ground. Our ultimate goal is to balance the student experience and make the classes as comprehensive as possible.

We have received a number of questions about taking the test without being in a class. Of course it is our intent to offer the test for the next higher level class during the lower level or prerequisite class. It is important for you to know that you can (with prior coordination) take the prerequisite skills test. Please be aware that you can call the range and set up an appointment with an instructor to take the skills test outside of class hours.

If you pass the test your records will be noted and you will be clear to enroll in the next level class.

Hope this helps everyone understand the process.

Draw From Holster and Rapid Fire Opportunity

We asked and about 22 of you responded. So we will start on March 5th and March 19th from 9am to 11am. We are going to commit two Monday mornings a month and bring in a dedicated staff member (RSO) to start. If the demand grows we will extend the opportunities.

So this is how it is going to work. The time allotted will be between 0900 and 1100. Because we are bringing in a staff person during non operational hours the doors will open at 0850 and will be locked at 0900. No one will be admitted after 0900.The shooting will be FREE to members and non-members will be charged $5.00 cash only as the registers will not be open.

If you've taken Def HG 2 or higher here at Center Target Sports and are interested in

an open shooting session to practice those skills this is the perfect opportunity to participate in this fun activity. Shooters are reminded that CTS will not be providing any instruction during this activity and this is why all participants must be vetted by their completion of Def HG II.

Feb topic: Back To The Basics of Rounds On Target

Our "Women of Caliber" group has a new schedule. Meeting the 2nd Tuesday 4:45-7pm. Shooting portion will be limited to the first 20 people to sign in with a cost of $10.00.

Please bring eye and ear protection as well as photo ID. 2-3 magazines are recommended if you have your own firearm. CTS will loan you a handgun free of charge with purchase of their ammo.

Everyone is welcome to attend the educational portion of the meeting from 5-6, however due to the growing number of ladies attending, we do not have enough mentors to work with new shooters. A basic pistol course is required to attend the shooting portion. Exceptions need to be discussed with Darla.

Basic carbine is the class that teaches the proper manipulation and function of the carbine for defense. This is an 6 hour course limited to 10 students. This course is designed to introduce students to the rifle and develop safe essential rifle skills. This course covers: ammunition selection, ballistics, loading, unloading and malfunctions, positions and aiming, marksmanship fundamentals, cover and concealment.

Wilderness 1st Aid - March 13th

It's time again for Wilderness First Aid. If you cut firewood, ride ATV's, Snowmobiles, hunt, fish or recreate in the wilderness this is the class for you. In this class we will discuss wilderness survival and critical first aid techniques.

The class is appropriate for all ages and experience levels. We will also discuss first aid kits and the differences between first aid in your back yard vs. first aid in remote areas.

Street Survival Skills

Defensive HG 2 - February 10th

This is an 8 hour course limited to 10 students. The primary goal of this course is to develop the defensive handgun and personal skills necessary to not only survive but control a lethal encounter. This course builds on the skills and theories presented in CTS-201. Students will learn and practice the skills, and attitude essential to surviving a lethal threat or confrontation.

The course will include both classroom presentations and live fire range exercises. A combination of Dry Practice and Live Fire with Real World Scenarios including multiple threats, low light shooting, hostage rescue, wounded shooter drills, equipment malfunctions, and moving targets. This course will conclude with a Course Review and Examination.

All instruction materials, range time, and targets are provided by Center Target Sports. The student is required to provide a handgun, two magazines or speed loaders, eye and ear protection, flashlight or weapons mounted light, a billed baseball type cap, 250 rounds of ammunition, and a strong side holster.

Reminder this is a prerequisite for the 2 day Tactical Pistol class and the potential special open shooting session discussed above.

He's Back! Welcome Back Murph!

That's right we are excited to welcome Steve back to the CTS team. He had to take a leave of absence last year to solve some drainage problems on his property that were affecting his home.

He has most of that behind him now and he is back and ready to assist you in any way possible. The next time you are in please take the time to say hello and welcome him back.

Wow, what a crowd for the January session of GSSF. First off, I would like to thank everyone for their patience as we worked everyone through the match. I think this is one of the first times we had people waiting to shoot who were not sharing a gun or waiting for the Pocket Glock classification. (I am thinking that the entertainment is really needed so I am still looking for singers and dancers).

We had a number of new shooters this time and I look forward to seeing you back over the next few months as you continue to improve on your accuracy and compete for the awards. I also want to acknowledge the large increase in our lady shooters. For many of the ladies it was your first time shooting with us and you all did an amazing job. Look out guys, these ladies are going to be showing you how it is done here real soon.

February 17th, the next match, is just around the corner so come on in and get some practice so you are ready. Oh, and if there are any magicians or comedians out there, we could use your talents for the entertainment along with the singers and dancers.

Supplementing Your Handgun Sights

Let's face it, more often than not the factory sights that came on your gun when you purchased it just are not adequate for every situation that you may come across. Because of this, I spend a lot of time changing sights for customers. Sights are a personal choice for each shooter. Often times that choice is based on their age, eyesight, primary purpose that the gun is used for and any number of other factors.

Sometimes, no matter how good your sights are they just are not enough and you need to step up your game. Some folks like to add red dot scopes. While red dots are nice and really up your "cool" factor they have several disadvantages. First off they are generally large and protrude above your slide quite a bit. This requires you to also purchase a new holster if you intend to carry your firearm. In addition, many firearms require machining to adapt a red dot sight to the slide. This permanently alters your firearm and can decrease its value not to mention it is expensive to have done.

Another option is the addition of a laser. Not long ago lasers were considered gimmicks, but over time that thinking has changed. Shooters are learning the value of lasers that allow you to shoot more accurately in low light conditions or in awkward shooting positions where you just can't raise up and align your sights. If you practice and practice perfect, so as not to develop bad habits, with your fixed sights during day light conditions then reply on your laser for low light conditions you have the best of both worlds. The choice then comes down to red or green when purchasing a laser.

That choice may seem simple, but it's not. Light travels in wavelengths in the visible spectrum. Different wavelengths produce different colors. Red light is between 620 - 750 nanometers and green is between 495 - 570 nanometers. The human eye is better able to recognize the green spectrum under bright light conditions. It would then seem that all laser made for firearms would be green, but there's a catch. It's not as simple as just changing a colored lens to change the color. Green lasers are more complex and difficult to build. They require special diodes, a second infrared laser crystal, and a frequency doubling crystal. Therefore they are slightly larger and more expensive to produce then red lasers. So when purchasing a laser for your firearm there's a tradeoff to be considered. Do you want smaller, lighter and cheaper or do you want a laser that is more visible under a wider variety of lighting conditions?

It's a misconception that all dangerous encounters happen after dark or in low light situations. Most shooters practice on ranges with more than adequate lighting to use iron sights. In low light though the advantage of lasers becomes quickly obvious and under those conditions red or green will provide an advantage. No matter which you choose, the addition of a laser to your defensive carry firearm makes sense because it allows you to shoot accurately under the worst conditions.

This Month's Shooting/Safety Tip

Over the last few weeks I have received a number of requests for Child Safety oriented information. What better way to reach so many of you at one time than this column. I often speak to social and civic groups on the subject of personal safety. Many times children are present during these meetings. I am always very careful in my choice of words and make a special effort to keep the message "age appropriate".

Our children are our most precious resource. As parents, it is our responsibility to provide our children with the skills to stay safe and protect themselves from potential dangers. Keep in mind your child's age and ability to understand and practice personal safety skills. You play a critical role in your child's safety. The parent is always the best person to teach children about personal safety. Begin talking to your child now, building an open relationship that allows for continued discussion as your child grows.

Capitalize on "teachable moments" when situations present opportunities for teaching your child valuable lessons. Be sure to dedicate the time when your child asks to talk to you. Your actions and words must them make it clear to your child that you are paying attention and trying to understand his or her point of view. Do whatever it takes to assure your child that it is safe to talk to you about any situation. I believe there is no substitute for your attention and supervision. Simply stated, know what is going on in their lives.

A great place to start with younger children is to make sure they know their full name, address and phone number and your full name. Be sure that your child knows how to call 9-1-1 in an emergency. Your child should know it is never appropriate to accept a ride or gift from an unknown person. Teach your child to say "no" if someone tries to touch or treats them in a way that makes them feel scared, uncomfortable, or confused.

You set the example - lock doors and windows and check to see who is there before opening the door. Post a phone number where you can be reached at all times.   Require your child to check in with you when he or she gets home. Have an emergency escape plan for your home in case of a fire or other emergency and practice it with your family.

Make sure that your child takes the safest routes to and from school, stores, and the homes of friends by sticking to well-traveled streets and avoiding short cuts. Develop in your child the importance of awareness by staying alert to his or her surroundings. Encourage their use of the buddy system; always taking a friend along when going places or playing outside.

Making visits to the store is an opportunity for your child to practice safe shopping skills. In your absence encourage your child to seek assistance if needed from an adult that has children with them. They should always check with you or the adult in charge before they go anywhere in the store or mall. For older children, designate a meeting spot to go to in case you get separated while shopping. Always supervise your child and escort young children to the restroom. For older children, encourage them to go to the restroom with a friend.   Make sure that your child knows to tell you if there is a change of plans.

These are but a few of the many things we can do to help our children stay safe. Over the next few months we will periodically address this subject. In the meantime, don't hesitate to contact me if you have a specific question or need.
