A Few Thoughts from Ed:

It is April 6th and I am again working on the newsletter that I had hoped would have been out last week.  You know what they say about the road of good intentions...in an airport.

Even w ith this lagging winter we have experienced, many of you are already well into your spring chores.  Of course I am not one of your proactive yard workers.  This time of year always seems to bring with it injuries such as falls, smashed fingers, bumps and bruises etc...  Luckily most of these injuries are minor but this is a great time for me to remind you to be prepared for all types of injuries.  All of you wood cutters should have a first aid kit that includes a tourniquet with you when using those chainsaws and driving in the back country.

Don't forget to check out all your tools and equipment before you use them after they have been stored all winter.  This goes way beyond the lawnmowers and garden tillers.  How about your ladders, saws, clippers etc?  A little safety inspection may allow that first aid kit to go untouched all year.  Take the time to assess the contents now, long before it is needed.  Look for expired medicines or ointments, the condition and quantities of bandages etc...

Our classes are continuing to sell out so don't wait till the last minute to register so you can be sure to get the date that best works for your schedule.  We will be offering some new programs this year and I believe we will be starting in the next few weeks to create new ways for you to enjoy your memberships.

Our Less lethal practice nights are doing well and we just completed our second session.  In this photo you can see Matt and one of our students.

Deb continues to surprise me with her ability to find helpful, practical and unique products for our retail area and to make your shooting more enjoyable.

A Reminder to anyone who plans on taking ADVANCED CARBINE this summer.

On the schedule is the last Basic Carbine class before the Advanced Class
carb one hand
that we teach each year at the Fernan Rod and Gun Club.  To take the Advanced class you must have had the Basic Carbine class or have special permission from the instructor (Ed).

WARNING   Warning   WARNING

Before ending this comment session, I want to address a practice I believe to be very dangerous.  I am referring to the practice of cupping your support hand over the top of a slide (ejection port) on a semi automatic handgun while racking the slide to the rear with the intent of catching the round as it is extracted from the chamber.

I haven't heard of this being taught in many years but I have recently seen students doing it.  When I asked them about it they told me they were taught the practice at a well known school in another state.  I could not believe it was actually taught there but have since confirmed it.

The main reason I am writing about it now (as we have always talked about and discouraged this practice in our classes) is that it was brought to my attention this week that a local firearm's instructor is also teaching this method of unloading your gun.

PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS!!  I have pictures that are much too graphic to print in this newsletter of people who have been severely injured when the primer of the round being removed was driven into the ejector by the retracting slide and resulted in an out of battery discharge.  We have the photos at CTS and any instructor on staff can show you or explain how this can happen.

If you are unloading in this manner PLEASE STOP IMMEDIATELY!

Save your hand ... bend over and pick up the ejected round.

Be Safe...ed

Consignment Corner

Welcome to the consignment corner.  Rather than list specific guns we have in our consignment section I want to explain the accessories aspect to some consignment guns.

We are unable to display or list many of the accessories that are often included with our consignment guns.   Items such as extra magazine (sometime 7 or 8 extra mags) holsters, tools, storage containers, ammunition, etc.

All of these extras add up to the overall value of the sale.  Imagine buying a $500.00 handgun that also has with it six $60.00 mags, that's quite a savings all for $500.00.

ASK THE STAFF ABOUT EXTRAS

We have developed such a great reputation with respect to our consignment firearms that many of you come in and ask about our stock every week.

  If you're interested, don't wait!

firing line More about our Prerequisite Tests

The prerequisite skills test are alive and well.  Thank you for your support and assistance in getting this process off the ground.  Our ultimate goal is to balance the student experience and make the classes as comprehensive as possible.

We have received a number of questions about taking the test without being in a class.  Of course it is our intent to offer the test for the next higher level class during the lower level or prerequisite class.  It is important for you to know that you can (with prior coordination) take the prerequisite skills test. Please be aware that you can call the range and set up an appointment with an instructor to take the skills test outside of class hours.  208-773-2331.

If you pass the test your records will be noted and you will be clear to enroll in the next level class.

Proficiency tests are now REQUIRED to enroll in Defensive HG 1 and Defensive HG 2....even if you took your class years ago.  No proficiency test is needed to retake a class you've already attended.

Hope this helps everyone understand the process.

Draw From Holster and Rapid Fire Opportunity

surelockThe next sessions are April 16, May 7 & 21 from 9am to 11am. We are going to commit two Monday mornings a month and bring in a dedicated staff member (RSO) to start.  If the demand grows we will extend the opportunities.

So this is how it is going to work.  The time allotted will be between 0900 and 1100.  Because we are bringing in a staff person during non operational hours the doors will open at 0850 and will be locked at 0900.  No one will be admitted after 0900.The shooting will be FREE to members and non-members will be charged $5.00 cash only as the registers will not be open.

If you've taken Def HG 2 or higher here at Center Target Sports and are interested in
an open shooting session to practice those skills this is the perfect opportunity to participate in this fun activity.  Shooters are reminded that CTS will not be providing any instruction during this activity and this is why all participants must be vetted by their completion of Def HG II.

Retired LE HR 218 CCW does not bypass NICS

The HR218 CCW ID in the State of Idaho does not meet the ID requirements necessary to eliminate the background check step in a firearm purchase.  As many of you know, the ID Enhanced CCW permit does allow an Idahoan to avoid the NICS check step in firearm purchases when purchasing a firearm in the State of Idaho.

In the past we have accepted the  equivalent HR 218 CCW permit but the ATF has notified us that this is no longer acceptable.  Retired LE personnel who purchase a firearm and do not have an Idaho CCW permit other than the HR 218 permit will have to be checked through NICS before taking possession of the firearm.

Center Target Sports is hosting a Glock Armorer Course at our facility
May 31st.

This course is being taught by the Glock Corporation and is a very comprehensive manufacturer's based experience.  If you own a Glock or are thinking of a Glock in the future, don't miss this class.

This Month's Shooting/Safety Tip

Diagnostics To Some Common Shooting Errors

This past week I taught a Basic Pistol Class for the first time in quite a while.  I was teaching with our newest Instructor Larry.  It was Larry's final evaluation by me before he will be teaching on his own.  I saw the same common errors by shooters as they began the shooting process.  It is amazing how consistent these issue manifest themselves on the range.  So I thought why not talk about some of them here.

Most of the shooting errors I see at the range are a failure to properly apply the two most important shooting fundamentals: sight alignment and trigger press. However, other factors may also cause a shooter to have problems in properly delivering a shot to the target.  The shooting situations listed below assume that the handgun and ammunition are functioning correctly, that the handgun sights are adjusted properly and that the shooter is right-handed. The shot groups for a left handed shooter will appear on the opposite side from the shot groups as described here.  Here are some possible causes to your misses if you are aiming for the center of the target but, are producing hits in the specific quadrants called out below.

SHOTS in Lower Left Quadrant: This pattern is caused when the shooter jerks the trigger, causing the front-sight to dip low and to the left before the bullet leaves the barrel. To correct this type of error, the trigger must be slowly pressed until the shot fires, being careful while pressing not to disturb the sight alignment and sight-picture.

SHOTS in 9 o'clock position: This pattern is created when the shooter does not properly place the index finger on the trigger. In such cases, the shooter has a tendency to press the trigger at an angle instead of straight to the rear. This improper press causes the muzzle to shift to the left, with the shots striking in the 8:30 to 9:30 zone.

SHOTS in Upper Left Quadrant: This is caused by 'riding the recoil'. This is where the shooter anticipates the recoil and makes the handgun recoil before it really happens. This type of pattern can also be caused by improper follow-through. The shooter releases the trigger finger too soon and may flip the finger forward, causing the front-sight to rise to the left. Errors of this nature will usually produce shots in the 9:30 to 12 o'clock zone.

SHOTS in Upper Right Quadrant:  Here the shooter has 'heeled' the shots high on the target. This error is caused by anticipating the shot and, at the last moment before firing, giving the handgun a slight push with the heel of the hand. The front-sight moves up to the right and the bullets strike the target in the 1 o'clock to 2:30 zone.

SHOTS in the 3 o'clock position: Here the shooter 'thumbs' the handgun. Just as the shot begins, the shooter pushes the right thumb against the side of the frame, causing the aligned sights to move to the right.

SHOTS in the Lower Right Quadrant: This target illustrates what happens when a shooter's grip tightens as the trigger is pressed. This target area is known as the 'lobster' area - just as a lobster's claw clamps together, the shooter's hand clamps or snatches at the last second. This movement causes the front-sight to dip low and to the right, pushing the shots to the 3:30 to 5 o'clock zone.

SHOTS directly below the point of aim:  The shot string in the 5 o'clock to 6:30 area is caused when the shooter 'breaks' the wrist - another form of anticipation. The shooter expects the handgun to recoil at a known instant and tries to fight or control this anticipated recoil by cocking the wrist downward. The shooter may subconsciously believe that the recoil can be lessened by holding the wrist down. This shot group can also be caused by a shooter who relaxes too soon.

SHOTS everywhere - No distinct pattern:  A peppered target is often produced by a beginning shooter. A new shooter usually does not consistently repeat one particular error, but instead commits many different errors. The result is a target with shots scattered in many places. Such a target may be caused by the shooter's inconsistency, including changing the grip between shots, focusing on the target instead of the front-sight on some shots, failing to align the sights properly and so on.
