A Few Thoughts from Ed:

Welcome back to our monthly newsletter. I hope you continue to realize some benefit in what we have to say in this monthly email. I am always looking for subjects to write about so if you have any ideas...send them in please.

We are increasing our class offerings this winter and the classes are already filling up. As always you can repeat any class completed forever for free. Our Idaho enhanced CCW class continues to sell out and we will increase the number of CCW classes per month as we enter our busy season. We are also hoping to offer a few new exciting classes this winter.....

A quick word on gunsmithing. We are investing a lot of time, energy and money in building up the gunsmith area of our business. Clint is putting systems in place and we are adding more equipment to the shop each month. We are committed to offering the best in gunsmith services to our customers and this region. The next time you have a firearm that needs modification, tuning, repair or a thorough cleaning/ inspection bring it to Clint.

Finally we have a Security 9 in the rental case now. I know it was a requested item for rent and should be a very popular firearm for rent.

Becoming more and more popular are the pistol caliber (9mm) long guns by Ruger and PWS (both rifle and pistol AR) also a Keltec Sub2k in Glock 9mm. We have them in stock for your inspection.

We have a Ruger PRECISION .22lr as well as a magazine fed shotgun, and Springfield Saints. Talk about Hot High Demand firearms we just got in a Shield m2 EDC kit... and the Sig 365 is starting to show up in our weekly deliveries. The Sig 365 will be posted on facebook and they will go first come first served. AND Holsters Plus is close to beginning production on this holster.

Deb continues to work tirelessly in her efforts to obtain the hard to get high demand firearms. It is exciting to us to see these firearms on the shelf and to see you take advantage of her efforts.

WARNING Warning WARNING

I want to address a practice I believe to be very dangerous. I am referring to the practice of cupping your support hand over the top of a slide (ejection port) on a semi automatic handgun while racking the slide to the rear with the intent of catching the round as it is extracted from the chamber.

I haven't heard of this being taught in many years but I have recently seen students doing it. When I asked them about it they told me they were taught the practice at a well known school in another state. I could not believe it was actually taught there but have since confirmed it.

We covered this a few months ago but the main reason I am writing about it again (as we have always talked about and discouraged this practice in our classes) is that it was brought to my attention that a local firearm instructor is also teaching this method of unloading your gun and I witnessed it again in a defensive level class last week.

PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS!! I have pictures that are much too graphic to print in this newsletter of people who have been severely injured when the primer of the round being removed was driven into the ejector by the retracting slide and resulted in an out of battery discharge. We have the photos at CTS and any instructor on staff can show you or explain how this can happen.

If you are unloading in this manner PLEASE STOP IMMEDIATELY!

WOMAN of CALIBER:

Our "Women of Caliber" group meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month 4:45-7pm.

Please bring eye and ear protection as well as photo ID. Dummy rounds for your specific caliber is also recommended along with 2-3 magazines if using your own firearm. If needed, CTS will loan you a handgun free of charge with purchase of their ammo.

Everyone is welcome to attend the educational portion of the meeting from 5-6, however due to the growing number of ladies attending, we do not have enough mentors to work with new shooters. A basic pistol course is required to attend the shooting portion. Exceptions need to be discussed with Darla.

Intro to Carbine - Sept 30

This is a class designed with the new carbine shooter in mind. It is as advertised an intro class.

Under our old format our basic carbine class often had students that had never even loaded an AR magazine let alone fired a shot. This required us to spend more time in the class room than was ideal and it also slowed our progress when we began shooting.

The perfect solution is to offer those true beginners an opportunity to get a good understanding of this very popular weapons system. The fundamentals of the AR are covered in detail and will allow the students to transition into the basic course with ease.

In addition, the basic course is now a 6 hour course with very little classroom and much more shooting time on the range.

This class will teach you what you need to know about building and or modifying the AR.

On day one you will build the rifle from parts provided to you in a ziplock bag. That's right... every rifle component will be placed in ziplock bags and you will assemble and function test the rifle.

Draw From Holster and Rapid Fire Opportunity

The next sessions are Sept 17, Oct 1, 15 from 9am to 11am. We are going to commit two Monday mornings a month and bring in a dedicated staff member (RSO) to start. If the demand grows we will extend the opportunities.

So this is how it is going to work. The time allotted will be between 0900 and 1100. Because we are bringing in a staff person during non operational hours the doors will open at 0850 and will be locked at 0900. No one will be admitted after 0900.The shooting will be FREE to members and non-members will be charged $5.00 cash only as the registers will not be open.

If you've taken Def HG 2 or higher here at Center Target Sports and are interested in

an open shooting session to practice those skills this is the perfect opportunity to participate in this fun activity. Shooters are reminded that CTS will not be providing any instruction during this activity and this is why all participants must be vetted by their completion of Def HG II.

We now have 4 Full Auto Machine guns to shoot.

Gunsmith Dept Update:

I hear a lot of people telling me they use a tooth brush for cleaning their firearms. A toothbrush may work for dusting and light cleaning, but it is too soft of a bristle for cleaning the internals of any firearm. When a round is fired, the casing releases carbon which is a light powder at the time of ignition, but as time passes the carbon settles and begins to harden. This hardened carbon requires a more aggressive bristle.

The military issues an A.P. Brush or All Purpose Brush for cleaning and maintaining their firearms. This brush works great and is very affordable. We have included this type of brush in our Gunsmith Recommended cleaning kit.

This Month's Shooting/Safety Tip

Fashionable Doesn't Always = Street Wise....

A common question in our CCW classes is "What is the best way to carry concealed in public?"   In my last CCW class the question came from a student who was physically fit and into wearing skin tight clothing that showed off their physique. I completely understand the fashion side of this discussion. However, the choices we make in selecting our wardrobe also impact the choice in firearm.

With the popularity of our CCW classes, I thought I would share with you some tips related to carrying in the "Public Eye" (in public). Surviving on the street is much different than what is often taught in the classroom. Below, are a number of suggestions that have all proven themselves through my own real-world experience and trial-and-error testing. Don't underestimate the importance of how your lifestyle and dress relate to the tactics and skill sets you decide to implement or put into your defensive toolbox.

Suits
Real life is not like movies or television. When you're in a real-life critical incident does someone stop the action and have a stunt man take your place? I can't tell you how many times I've seen civilians in suits with a belt that's too narrow and thin to support their gear.

And what about the suit jacket? A belt holstered or shoulder holstered weapon requires a cover over your weapon in public, whether it's some type of jacket, sweatshirt, sweater or shirt. What's the problem with the jacket? There's no problem if you're trained, practiced and competent in drawing your weapon from underneath it, but most civilians don't train this way. Do you wear a jacket during firearms training? Why not? And what do you wear on your feet when you wear a suit?

Shoes

What shoes would you choose if you knew you were heading into a gunfight? If you must wear an Oxford shoe (low cut), make sure it laces and does not have all-leather soles. All-leather soles provide no traction. Ditto for Western-style boots. In a fight it's like you're standing on ice. And finally, my observations about shoes apply to women, too. If you wouldn't wear Gucci loafers, why would you wear high heels?

Ties

Ties are my next bone of contention. Would you wear a noose to a fist fight? I learned this lesson back in elementary school. I know there's no way you would wear a clip-on tie, right? Well, that's your decision and you'll have to live with it.

Train as you work, work as you train.

To properly draw a pistol from under a jacket, it takes two moves, not just a simple gripping action. The first move sweeps the jacket back and out of the way, past the pistol. Then, as your shooting hand comes forward from the sweep, you grip and draw.

Tip:

Always stow your keys in the weapon-side pocket of your jacket. This will add some weight and momentum to the sweeping motion.

When wearing a pullover, instead of sweeping back, forcefully pull the pullover up and over the pistol, then grip the pistol on the weapon-return motion. In both situations, don't attempt to grip the pistol until the garment clears the weapon or you will wrap it around your pistol grips. Learn how to use both hands in combination or separately to do this. You never know what the real world will throw at you, so practice each method.  Tip: If you wear a shoulder holster, use your non-shooting hand to pull open your jacket to gain access to your pistol.

Test Your Gear

You must test each and every piece of equipment you carry or own to see if it will perform properly under stressful situations. Don't rely on manufacturer advertisements or a sales pitch. In the SSS class I encourage my students to carry as they do on the street. If their gear fails them and they complain about having to get new equipment, I tell them it's better to discover this in training than on the street.
