A Few Thoughts from Ed: ed pic

August 11th is behind us and what a day is was!  Our Customer Appreciation event was an amazingly successful collaboration of the CTS team and the community.  We ended up with 16,880 lbs of food for the Post Falls Food Bank.  We also collected 67 pints of blood for the Inland NW Blood Bank which we've been told will help 220 local people in need. We also collected a new record of toys for us with 6 ½ totes full for Toys for Tots... ALL OF THIS IN ONLY 5 HOURS!!!

It was an amazing day!  Oh, and by the way for those of you who have asked...I was dunked a total of 71 times....some of those I do not believe were legitimate ball hits on the target...but worry not I know who you are....

Thank all of you again for your participation and support.

GLODEN TICKET WINNER
Congratulations to Andrew Miller who won the golden ticket prize of the Ironman Safe and a Lifetime membership to CTS.  A total prize value of $3,800.00.

We gave away 5 firearms and hundreds of prizes in support of three organizations that need help. We issued the challenge and you stepped up big time and our three primary benefactors are the big winners.  Thanks to everyone who participated and donated.

Also a big thank you to the vendors who showed up and were busy all day.   A huge thank you to Joseph Strain and his family for the awesome Bullwhip demos and Post Falls Police Sgt Frank Bowne and his K9 Duco.

Other unsung heroes who stepped up to join us in supporting this community include the Spokane Chiefs and Idaho Central Credit Union.   Many radio stations say they support the community, but talk is cheap.  K102 Country Radio and specifically the guys from the Morning Stampede Jeff and Derik are the real deal.  These guys promoted our event for weeks in advance.  A special thanks to Derik Walker and Jeff McLean from K102 who made time in an already ridiculously hectic day to broadcast live from 10am to 1pm.

It is almost September and hunting season is only days away.  I can't believe I need to start thinking about preparing the snowblower for the season.  We always have mixed emotions about summer ending.  On the positive side it marks the beginning of our busy season and we are always happy to see the lanes full and the class schedule offering many more classes.

With hunting right around the corner now is the time to get your gear out and service it.   If you are not sure about your rifle or backup handgun now is the time to shoot it and confirm all is well.  There is no better way to prove your equipment and boost your confidence than to shoot your rifle at distance.  You need look no further than Fernan rod and Gun club.  Get out there and enjoy this awesome facility.  We as a shooting community must never take these outdoor ranges for granted.  The great folks at Fernan are working tirelessly to improve the facility and offer us an outdoor range to be very proud of.

Don't forget to see the gunsmith special below aimed at all you hunters...  And yes the pun was intended.

Also don't forget Idaho Friends of the NRA banquet and over 100 hundred gun giveaway drawing.  We have tickets available.  Next time you are in ask a team member for more info.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!
Be Safe...ed

Consignment Corner

Welcome to the consignment corner.  Remember many of the consignment guns have additional accessories.

We are unable to display or list many of the accessories that are often included with our consignment guns.   Items such as extra magazine (sometime 7 or 8 extra mags) holsters, tools, storage containers, ammunition, etc.

All of these extras add up to the overall value of the sale.  Imagine buying a $500.00 handgun that also has with it six $60.00 mags, that's quite a savings all for $500.00.

Draw From Holster and Rapid Fire Opportunity

surelockThe next sessions are Aug 20, Sept 3, 17 from 9am to 11am. We are going to commit two Monday mornings a month and bring in a dedicated staff member (RSO) to start.  If the demand grows we will extend the opportunities.

So this is how it is going to work.  The time allotted will be between 0900 and 1100.  Because we are bringing in a staff person during non operational hours the doors will open at 0850 and will be locked at 0900.  No one will be admitted after 0900.The shooting will be FREE to members and non-members will be charged $5.00 cash only as the registers will not be open.

If you've taken Def HG 2 or higher here at Center Target Sports and are interested in
an open shooting session to practice those skills this is the perfect opportunity to participate in this fun activity.  Shooters are reminded that CTS will not be providing any instruction during this activity and this is why all participants must be vetted by their completion of Def HG II.

If you've taken Def HG 1 and have passed the proficiency test, there's a Def HG 2 class on the calendar in August....this is the class that qualifies you for this opportunity.

Intro to Carbine - Aug 26
  mkII series
This is a class designed with the new carbine shooter in mind.  It is as advertised an intro class.

Under our old format our basic carbine class often had students that had never even loaded an AR magazine let alone fired a shot.  This required us to spend more time in the class room than was ideal and it also slowed our progress when we began shooting.

The perfect solution is to offer those true beginners an opportunity to get a good understanding of this very popular weapons system.  The fundamentals of the AR are covered in detail and will allow the students to transition into the basic course with ease.

In addition, the basic course is now a 6 hour course with very little classroom and much more shooting time on the range.

Gunsmith Dept update:

Is Your Rifle Ready?

Every hunting season many hunters replace their rifles because they just don't shoot as accurately as they once did. Sometimes replacement is necessary.  However, for the majority of situations replacement in NOT necessary.

What is required is a thorough cleaning which includes copper fouling removal as well as the removal of any lead
build up.  It is amazing how accuracy can be effected by a dirty or fouled barrel.

Another contribu tor to accuracy issues is a scope that has been damaged in some way.

This month we are offering a pre-hunting special:   Gunsmith deep cleaning and copper buildup removal  or scope test for $30.00.

Hours for our Gunsmith Dept are Tues-Sat 1pm-6pm.

New Product Highlights
CRKT Minimalist Knife

Specifically built for anything that needs to be cut. These compact fixed blade neck knives with tough handles come in a variety of different blade styles. In the woods or around the house they feel equally at home.

They're designed by Alan Folts of Melbourne, FL. A designer and dedicated custom knife instructor with over 20 years' experience, he cares deeply about helping folks learn about knives as tools, and passing along the skills of custom knife making to others.

These svelte dynamos pack a lot into their compact fixed blade knife designs. Available in plain edge Wharncliffe, tanto and Bowie style blades, they rip through a variety of cutting tasks better than most knives of comparable size. You owe it to yourself to see how something so compact can come up so big with such great control.

Let your first two fingers take hold of the polished resin infused fiber handle. Wrap the last two around the cord fob for extra grip. Then see where you can go with it from there. You'll find it's tough to argue against the value of having a knife along with you, especially one as versatile and comfortable as the Minimalist. It's slim in design only, not features.

They all come with a versatile carry sheath. Not that you'll be keeping them in there for long.

Take your favorite with you for when you might need it most-all of the time.

This Month's Shooting/Safety Tip

Dry Fire is but one tool...It Is NOT the complete Solution!

Don't get me wrong I always have been and still am a believer in dry fire practice. However the subconscious is way to smart to be fooled by dry fire drills to improve shot anticipation or an unfavorable response to the discharge of the firearm.  So for the mechanics of the trigger manipulation from a skill maintenance perspective there are many positive aspects of dry fire.

I want to talk about an aspect of dry fire that is often misunderstood.  Many students ask me about dry fire practice to correct shot anticipation or flinch response causing a disruption to the shot sequence and ultimately the delivery of the shot to the desired location.

The subconscious quickly recognizes the fact that the gun will not fire and therefore it will not prepare you for the recoil or the shot anticipation.  The subconscious just stops working about the recoil and therefore the dry fire sequence is perfect and you are so proud of the shot manipulations with our moving the gun or your sight alignment.

But within three shots of live fire practice the recoil anticipation is right back and we are often shooting low and to the left for the right hand shooters.  There is hope however, Ball and dummy drills are the most effective way to stop the flinch response or shot anticipation.  Time after time we have proven this in our 4 or 5 day comprehensive handgun classes.

Ball and dummy means interspersing dummy (inert) ammunition among your live ammunition during a practice session.   The purpose of ball and dummy is to watch the sights when the dummy round is clicked on to learn how smoothly, or not, you are pressing the trigger. Ball and dummy for marksmanship training is NOT the same as an Immediate Action Drill (IAD).

For an IAD, you want to clear the malfunction as quickly as possible. With ball and dummy, you want to observe the sights for at least 300 milliseconds (about 1/3 of a second) after the hammer or striker falls to see what your trigger press was like and THEN clear the malfunction.

Alternating ball and dummy is both the most soul crushing and, at the same time, the most productive marksmanship drill you can do. You'll see just exactly how smoothly you're pressing the trigger when you do this drill.

With a revolver, for instance the iconic J frame, this exercise is extremely easy. Load a cylinder of ammo. After each shot, followthrough for one second. After you have completed your followthrough, open the cylinder, spin it, and then close it. Press the trigger smoothly until another round fires. Then open, spin, close, and repeat. Do this until you have fired all the rounds in the cylinder. Continue doing this for about four cylinders.

Whether using a revolver or autoloader, you gain useful visual feedback about what a good trigger press feels like. There's a reason we refer to 'hand-eye coordination.' The visual process teaches the tactile process as to what works and what doesn't. After a while, you will become annoyed with seeing the sights nosedive and begin to press the trigger smoothly. That's the point where you start to become a marksman.

When You Choose to Dry Fire You must do it safely and with correct procedure and for the appropriate benefits.  Below see a few dry fire tips!

As you have heard me say many times, Smooth Trigger Press is critical to accurate consistent shooting.  Regardless if you are shooting a Bullseye match, IDPA, or just practicing your defensive shooting skills, Trigger Press is critical.

It has been proven that weapon handling skills degrade by 20% in only one week if you are inactive. Dry fire practice is crucial to improving and maintaining live fire skills. In dry-fire, you essentially do everything except experience the bang and the cycling of the action. By not having to deal with recoil management or noise issues, you will be able to concentrate on proper equipment manipulation and trigger control.  And it is FREE!

The key to effective practice is to perform the fundamentals perfectly. Trigger control, sight alignment, sight picture, grip and posture can all be practiced during dry-fire but it must be done correctly.  Aim at a very small target.  My DF target is about a 1/4" circle.  The small target magnifies any poor follow through, trigger control or other poor techniques. Call every shot, you must know if you pulled the shot or jerked the trigger.   The old adage "Only perfect practice makes perfect" should be followed.

How Often To Practice Dry Fire:

I believe you should dry-fire 5 times as much as you live fire.  Keep the sessions to under 15 minutes.  Two or three sessions per week will result in noticeable improvement in fairly short order. It's not productive to practice for long periods because people tend to get sloppy which does nothing but build bad habits. It's better to do 15 minutes three times a week than one 45 minute session once per week.

Some Dry Fire Safety Considerations:
  1. Clear your gun - Remove all ammo from training area.
  2. Place target in a safe direction to minimize potential for injury if a negligent discharge occurs.
  3. Visually and manually inspect guns, magazines and training rounds to ensure no live rounds are present.
  4. Repeat Step 3.
  5. Do not allow yourself to be disturbed. If you are, stop the session and deal with it. Do "condition check" upon your return.
  6. When you have completed the practice session...  NO MORE PRACTICE FOR THE SESSION.  REMOVE YOURSELF FROM THE PRACTICE AREA BEFORE YOU LOAD YOUR FIREARM.  Never make your gun hot in the DF practice area...NEVER

Remember....Be Safe...Ed
