A Few Thoughts from Ed:

My favorite time of year is upon us. The Christmas season is an additional reminder to us all that we need to take time for ourself and our families. I know a number of you just said "Did he just say that?" I know... I know... I am trying to slow down.

There are no shortages of distractions in our life and with a mindset towards personal safety we often get wrapped up with distractions to our situational awareness. Today I want to offer a simple reminder to us all to take a moment and reward ourselves with thoughts of family, friends, and the things we so cherish in life but often overlook.

Our family here at CTS is strong and full of life. Peggy, Deb, and I are so blessed to have the staff we have here ready to serve you. I think back over the years and I'm not sure that statement was always the case. In fact, this staff is not just ready to serve you everyday, they are excited to offer you any assistance possible.

We are not perfect...none of us are. All we can hope to do is put forward our best effort on a daily basis. I believe the CTS team does that very well. So as we approach the Christmas holiday take some time to share the shooting experience with those you love. If you have someone in your circle who has not experienced the pleasure and excitement of the shooting sports, take the time to offer them the experience.

Our entire team send their sincere wishes for a joyous Christmas season and a very prosperous New Year.

Frank Baker

Frank was born and raised in California. He served in the Navy Reserves for six years after attending Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. In California, he had his own business in accounting systems. He moved to Idaho with his wife, Susan, in 1984 to raise their young daughters. In Idaho, he finished his BA and MA degrees.

He worked at Hope Realty as an owner and realtor. The Bakers owned 50 acres near the national forest and enjoyed the years hunting near their home. His grown daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren still live in the northwest and enjoy all that this area has to offer.

Frank's recreations are centered on hunting, target shooting, boating, camping and enjoying the outdoors.

Frank has been a member of Center Target Sports for many years. It is now his privilege to join the team that offers expert training and products for self and family defense.

Our "Women of Caliber" group has a new schedule. Meeting the 2nd Tuesday 4:45-7pm. Shooting portion will be limited to the first 20 people to sign in with a cost of $10.00.

Please bring eye and ear protection as well as photo ID. 2-3 magazines are recommended if you have your own firearm. CTS will loan you a handgun free of charge with purchase of their ammo.

Everyone is welcome to attend the educational portion of the meeting from 5-6, however due to the growing number of ladies attending, we do not have enough mentors to work with new shooters. A basic pistol course is required to attend the shooting portion. Exceptions need to be discussed with Darla.

Basic Carbine - Dec 17

Basic carbine is the class that teaches the proper manipulation and function of the carbine for defense. This is an 6 hour course limited to 10 students. This course is designed to introduce students to the rifle and develop safe essential rifle skills. You will learn the short and medium range applications which are encountered by Law Enforcement/Military personnel in an urban/rural environment.

This course covers: ammunition selection, ballistics, loading, unloading and malfunctions, positions and aiming, marksmanship fundamentals, cover and concealment.

Low-Light Shooting Techniques

Tips from our Gunsmith Daniel

A special thank you to all who have taken the time to sing the praises of our new gunsmith Daniel Blake. He has been working tirelessly to get through the extensive backlog of work that we had when we hired him.

Daniel is very experienced and is dedicated to growing the gunsmith business here in Post Falls to the level of service and quality of work of business he started and operated in Alaska.

It is a real coup to have Daniel and all his experience here at CTS. Please see below for his "December Gunsmith Thoughts".

The one responsibility of gun ownership so often ignored is that of cleaning and maintaining your firearm. Approximately 60% of the work that I receive could have been avoided had the owner taken proper care of his/her firearm.

An inadequately maintained firearm will often accumulate fouling and dirt within the barrel and receiver. This can not only clog up the rifling and decrease accuracy and precision, but also interfere with the proper operation of the action and lead to potentially dangerous malfunctions. Some fouling's and dirt are actually corrosive and capable of making your firearm vulnerable to rusting and wear leading to irreversible damage over time.

Firearms produce massive forces at the moment that you pull the trigger. A typical 9mm produces a maximum of 34,084 psi at the instant of firing. In the first milliseconds after a cartridge is fired pressure can be 2,300 times higher than normal. For the proper functioning of the firearm and safety of the shooter proper lubrication is an absolute must.

I have eight basic rules when cleaning my own firearms. They are as follows:

1)      First and foremost, before beginning any cleaning or maintenance on your firearm remove the magazines and insure there is no live ammunition in the firearm. Then remove any live ammunition from the area that you are working in.

2)      Wear rubber gloves and eye protection during all cleaning operations. Some cleaning solvents, fouling and debris inside the firearm can be toxic.

3)      Always clean from breach to muzzle - the natural direction of the bullet travel. (This prevents pushing debris and dirt getting into the chamber and action.)

4)      Center the tip and rod. Be careful not to let either rub the bore.

5)      Use a clean patch surface each time you go down the barrel. I equate this to mopping a floor. Each time you go over the floor with your mop you dip it and wring it out to prevent just pushing the dirt around. Using a clean patch surface prevents just pushing the dirt around.

6)      Never run a brush in a barrel first. This can potentially damage your barrel.

7)      Never reverse directions of a brush while inside the barrel, doing so can damage the inside of your barrel and potentially get the brush stuck inside.

8)      Use only a few drops of solvent/lubricant. Over use can cause gummy triggers and if your firearm has a wood stock, over lubricating can cause excessive lubricant to soak into the stock and may cause the stock to fail prematurely. Always follow your manufacture's recommendations on lubrication.

In short, each time you fire your firearm you should take a few moments to clean and inspect it prior to putting it back into storage. If this is your concealed carry, defensive firearm it's even more important to take proper care of it. You may need it to save your life or the life of a loved one someday. If you have just purchased a new firearm and are unfamiliar with the proper maintenance procedures Center Target Sports offers free orientation classes specific to that firearm. Please see one of our fantastic sales people for a schedule.

Seminar participants are presented with a variety of common sense crime prevention strategies they may integrate into their daily lives. Participants will better understand criminal thinking and will be provided tips on maximizing home, travel, automobile, telephone, technological, and personal safety. There are no firearms in this class. There are no pre-requisites for this class.

The cost of this course is $20.00 and all the proceeds go to the Post Falls Woman's Shelter (OASIS).

Since this class tuition all goes to charity this is the only class CTS offers that does not offer a free retake.

This Month's Shooting/Safety Tip

Dry Fire... Dry Fire.... Dry Fire

This is a repeat Tip as some of you long time readers know. A number of you have emailed and called wanting to know about Dry Fire practice. So I felt it appropriate to reprint this tip.

Dry Fire practice is not the end all solution. In fact, most firearms instructors don't even know how to do it or explain how to do it properly. Dry Fire practice is just one small component to a good practice routine. Remember the subconscious will quickly realize the gun is empty and before you know it you will be doing perfect dry fire manipulations. Then you go back to live fire and your back to your bad habits with the trigger. It is a process and it will take time. Below you will find some tips on how to get the most from your dry fire practice.

As you have heard me say many times, Smooth Trigger Press is critical to accurate consistent shooting. Regardless if you are shooting a bullseye match, IDPA, or just practicing your defensive shooting skills, Trigger Press is a critical component to shooting.

It has been proven that weapon handling skills degrade by 20% in only one week if you are inactive. Dry fire practice is crucial to improving and maintaining live fire skills. In dry-fire, you essentially do everything except experience the bang and the cycling of the action. By not having to deal with recoil management or noise issues, you will be able to concentrate on proper equipment manipulation and trigger control.

And it is FREE!

The key to effective practice is to perform the fundamentals perfectly. Trigger control, sight alignment, sight picture, grip and posture can all be practiced during dry-fire but it must be done correctly. Aim at a very small target. My DF target is about a 1/4" circle. The small target magnifies any poor follow through, trigger control or other poor techniques.

Call every shot! You must know if you pulled the shot or jerked the trigger. The old adage "Only perfect practice makes perfect" should be followed.

How Often To Practice Dry Fire:

I believe you should dry-fire 5 times as much as you live fire. Keep the sessions to under 15 minutes. Two or three sessions per week will result in noticeable improvement in fairly short order. It's not productive to practice for long periods because people tend to get sloppy which does nothing but build bad habits. It's better to do 15 minutes three times a week than one 45 minute session once per week.

Some Dry Fire Safety Considerations:

Clear your gun - Remove all ammo from training area. Then check it again!

Place target in a safe direction to minimize potential for injury if a negligent discharge occurs.

Visually and manually inspect guns, magazines and training rounds to ensure no live rounds are present.

Repeat Step 3.

Do not allow yourself to be disturbed. If you are, stop the session and deal with it. Do "condition check" upon your return.

When you have completed the practice session... NO MORE PRACTICE FOR THE SESSION. REMOVE YOURSELF FROM THE PRACTICE AREA BEFORE YOU LOAD YOUR FIREARM. Never make your gun hot in the DF practice area...NEVER!
