Emmanuel Lutheran Church Weekly E-news & Updates

Your Weekly News & Updates
Dear E-News Reader,

"Quit being such a baby!" When I was growing up, and even still, this was one of the worst insults someone could have hurled at me. Our bible reading in church yesterday called us all babies, 'infants in Christ'. Maybe it is because I am having a baby soon or maybe it is because I had my feelings hurt by this passage but I have been thinking about it quite a bit. How am I like a baby?

When I do not get my way on any number of issues I usually have my feelings hurt. While I do not cry and wail like a baby I do exhibit some physical traits, either a red face or a shift in my position. Truthfully though, my infancy extends beyond just my feelings.

I believe that many of us, like babies, act passively in this life. We wait to be fed and then impulsively either eat it or spit it out; not discerning what is put before us. Of course I am not talking about a meal, rather our 'diet of life'. People who are on diets are intentional about what they consume and we should be intentional about our consumption in living as well. It is too often that we consume a diet of false hope and artificial community.  A specific example sticks out to me.

During the inauguration I heard a renewed call of hope in our community. I am all for supporting our elected leaders and celebrating our democratic process yet I want to caution us that God's ways are not our ways. I recall God's people in Isaiah being distressed by Persian King Cyrus even though his anointing turned out to be a good thing. God's people loved King Saul and he turned out to be awful. Often what we want is not what is good for us, like an infant wanting candy!

Take a moment this week to consider what your diet is. What are you consuming? What are you hoping in? We hope to see you this coming weekend at Emmanuel because if you are what you eat then you are surely the Body of Christ.

In Christ,
Pastor Matt

Sunday at Emmanuel

A great day of worship Sunday at Emmanuel

Property Team Was Busy This Past Weekend

Mother's Lounge repainted

New smart thermostats installed
Lights changed in sanctuary to LED.

Shannon Gald changing sanctuary lights to LED; 6-50% of previous electricity use.
Gary Dunklau changing lights in the sanctuary to LED.

The Property Team has been busy the past several months around the church. In late December, the sanctuary and entry carpets were cleaned. The classrooms will be cleaned in the upcoming months.

The Nursery is being updated to accommodate several of the new and expected mothers at Emmanuel. New paint, new furniture, curtains and more will help with this transition.

Does the Sanctuary and classrooms look brighter? Most lighting fixtures have been updated to LED. The new lights use between 6% and 50% of the previous energy consumption. The parking lot lights will be replaced in the upcoming months.

The church thermostats have been updated and are more user friendly. The thermostats can now be operated at the panel, on a smart phone or from home. After all improvements are made, we anticipate this reducing our energy budget significantly in upcoming years.

More improvements are on the way!

Chad
