Greetings!

This week we kick off Orem Reads, Orem's annual celebration of community reading. Throughout September and October the library is hosting a number of exciting events to help individuals and families to explore many of the themes introduced in Marilynne Robinson's Gilead. A full schedule of events can be found at orembigread.org, but here are a few events in the next two weeks we are really excited about:

September 29
Orem Reads Kickoff Event with Brian Doyle
7:00 PM Storytelling Wing
Doyle's award-winning essays are frequently anthologized in a wide variety of books, including in numerous Best American Essays and Best Spiritual Writing collections. In an event that will leave the audience inspired and moved, Doyle will use his own writing to explore themes from Gilead. Free copies of Gilead will be available after the program. Scroll down to get a small sampling of Doyle's writing!

Dean Duncan Presents Films about Family
7:00 PM Media Auditorium

Join Dr. Duncan as he discusses how filmmakers have explored some of these same themes of youth and age, education and innocence, and belief and skepticism. After the discussion, you'll leave with a new list of must-watch movies!

October 4
Resonance Story Theatre Presents: Sticks and Stones
7:00 PM Storytelling Wing
Gather around as the traveling minstrel opens her bag of sticks and stones! Each stick and stone represents a story. Which stories will she choose? She'll choose the perfect one for you--full of color, dance, music, and rhythm. Lively stories will touch on the deeper themes of forgiveness, friendship, and community with humor and fun for the whole family! Performed by Nannette Watts, Karla Huntsman and Jewels Olsen and written by Wendy Gourley.

He was also a National Book Award finalist for Of Wolves and Men. Lopez is frequently honored for his work. Like Robinson, Lopez explores ethics, morality, and place, all major themes in Gilead. He will be reading and discussing his work in this rare Utah appearance.

Dies Miraculum by Brian Doyle

The following is a proem shared with Orem Library by author Brian Doyle

Imagine this: You are standing at the stove, first thing in the morning,

And the dog is sprawled too close to your feet, as is his usual custom,

On the off chance something good to eat will fall from the sky (bacon

That one time, which he never forgot, surely the best day he ever had)

And there are just enough coffee beans, and miraculously there is milk,

And there is a subtle mysterious unknowable woman in the other room,

Her unknowability probably being the very font and essence of interest,

And there are three children sleeping like logs, and you have a job that

Doesn't feel like work at all, and the heat grumbles on when you ask it,

And no one is shooting at us, and the water is crystalline and abundant,

And the electricity works, and the roof doesn't leak, and an osprey flies

By, so my question is this: isn't this the wealthiest man who ever lived?

It occurs to me that he is. It occurs to me that occasionally he realizes it.
