Greetings!
Fair Share photo
The Charter Revision Commission voted unanimously to propose adding Fair Share language to the Charter mandating that the Atlas of City-owned Property (i.e. - the map of all City properties published with the Annual Statement of Needs) include all State, Federal and private facilities that handle solid waste and transportation in each Community Board. Right now, the Atlas only includes City-owned property, which means that City agencies and the public only have a partial sense of our community's environmental burdens.

NYC-EJA extends its congratulations to the Charter Commission. This is a good first step, and something EJ activists have wanted for 20 years. Of course, the Commission should have included power plants and other polluting facilities, as well as public health data like asthma rates, in the Atlas Map. The final language will be drafted and voted on at the Commission hearing on 8/23 - please contact the Charter Revision Commission at 212-442-1500 or commission@charter.nyc.gov and request that power plants and relevant public health data be included in the Atlas Map.

NYC-EJA lobbied Commissioners and staff directly for months, and testified at nearly every hearing. We'll never know how much more we could have convinced this Commission to do, if some of our allies didn't lobby the Commission not to do anything but term limits this year. But at least there will be a little more transparency in City facility sitings. Thanks again for all your support.
