| Greetings!
Last weekend I had the honor to attend the 1st Annual GOPAC Hispanic Summit that was held in Dallas, Texas. At this conference, I had the pleasure to visit with House District 52 Republican candidate Larry Gonzales and State Representative of Arizona Steve Montenegro. Rep. Montenegro, is a youth pastor by profession, and is the only Hispanic Republican in the Arizona House of Representatives.

Our discussion centered on the background and truth about the Arizona Immigration Bill - Senate Bill 1070. Mr. Gonzales was questioning Mr. Montenegro with regard to the Arizona Immigration Bill, when he realized quickly he needed to videotape the conversation with Mr. Montenegro so the real truth could be shared with other concern Americans.
When asked why he voted for and co-sponsored the bill, Rep. Montenegro said, "In Arizona there are two big issues - crime coming across the border and human smuggling. How can we sit by and allow child trafficking? It's the Hispanic community that suffers the majority of these crimes."
The scope of the violent situation plaguing Mexico was highlighted this past week as bullets from a shootout in Juarez struck the campus of the University of Texas-El Paso. Previously, shots fired from across the boarder have hit the city hall of El Paso. "The situation is dire south of the border, and those who refuse to acknowledge the violence are turning a blind eye to a very real threat to the safety of our citizens," said Gonzales.
Representative Montenegro stated that most of the opposition to Arizona Senate Bill 1070 comes from "the radical left trying to make their names great, to make money, and create fear without need." Rep. Montenegro went on to say, "This is not a new immigration law. It doesn't give police officers any new authorities to pull people over and does not create any new opportunities for police to exploit."
Representative Montenegro was asked about some of the possible unintended consequences of the bill and responded by saying "we came back and there were some people raising concerns about 'contact' with law enforcement, so we clarified the law to specifically say a person had to be lawfully stopped or arrested before any of the immigration status checks could take place. The fears that some people in the Hispanic community have about being forced to present papers at anytime are unfounded and unwarranted."
When we asked him about the issue of racial profiling, Rep. Montenegro responded by saying, "In the bill itself, it says you can not use race, color, or ethnicity to apply this bill. You can not violate someone's civil rights. I mean, it's in there. You'll be happy to know it's in there."
Although certain provisions of the Arizona Immigration Bill were placed on hold, Rep. Montenegro is certain about the outcome of the federal lawsuit. "It's ridiculous, we are a sovereign state, just like the sovereign state of Texas, and we took an oath to protect our state from all threats, including foreign," said Montenegro. "In the end, I'm positive the people of the state of Arizona will prevail." IMPORTANT UPDATE Because of Conservative Republican leadership leading the way in Austin during the past 10 years Texas has become the "shining city upon a hill" that Americans are flocking towards. As recently as this week, the Fraser Institute rated Texas #1 in economic freedom across all of North America. Even Democrats such as Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi recognize Texas' strength, and they are coming to take advantage of the prosperity that Texas has to offer by holding fundraisers in Dallas and Austin. Even though the Democrats have come to Texas to reap the benefits of our business friendly environment that is made possible by Republican leadership, they are trying to kill that pro-business environment. Democrats taxing-and-spending, government-growing policies will hurt our Texas economy by eliminating jobs and it will stifle the growth of thousands of small businesses. The best way to prevent this encroachment of big government is to help elect conservative Republicans, such as Raul Torres, CPA, to the Texas House of Representatives this November. Raul believes that freedom, free markets, and private enterprise are real ingredients of economic and social prosperity.
We need a proven business owner and true conservative like Raul Torres serving us in Austin!
