Hello and welcome to News Happenings Around Town, your one-stop source for city information and news updates, including those items most important to you.

Monday, August 31 is the last day for public comment on the 2015 Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan. This strategy outlines how counties across the state, including Jackson county, will lessen damage caused by man-made and natural disasters. You can click here to view the plan and provide comment.

Have you ever wondered what our City's budget looks like? You can now view the proposed FY 2015-16 budget online by clicking here. The public hearing for the City's budget will be held on Monday, September 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose room of the Municipal Annex.

I encourage each of you to take advantage of these opportunities to be engaged in your community.

As always, please continue sharing this timely publication and spreading the word about the good things in the City of Blue Springs.

Missouri Main Street Connection
This past July, Blue Springs Downtown Alive!, City of Blue Springs and the Blue Springs Chamber of Commerce were awarded the Streetscape & Public Improvement Project Award by Missouri Main Street Connection.

Blue Springs was nominated for multiple public-private projects that improve the functionality of the downtown corridor and beautify the streetscape. The nomination included the addition of:

  • Parking lots throughout the city resulting in a total of more than 230 additional parking spaces.
  • Four new benches and four new recycling/trash receptacles added along Main Street
  • Fifteen unique bike racks added along Main Street. The racks were designed, assembled and donated by our very own Bike Stop.
These improvements combined with the ongoing efforts of Downtown Alive! resulted in the City being recognized as an Associate Community-one step away from becoming an Accredited participant in the MMSC program.

I am pleased to share that I was also a semi-finalist for the Outstanding Public Official Award.

Our Downtown Alive! groups is doing great things for Blue Springs and I look forward to their continued success in growing Blue Springs!
Blue Springs Fieldhouse Update
Construction and renovation on the Blue Springs Fieldhouse is nearing completion and we are getting closer to the September opening date. Parks & Recreation crews, SFS Architecture and Turner Construction Company have been working diligently to create a facility that provides fitness and recreation for all.

Once complete, the Fieldhouse will offer 76,000-square-feet of indoor recreational space including a fitness center equipped with the latest technology and a variety of weight and cardio equipment. Members can enjoy benefits such as the open gym sessions, Kidz Corner and unlimited access to on-demand fitness courses.

Eastern Jackson County Municipal Challenge

This past July, I participated in the fifth annual Mayor's HotShot Challenge with fellow mayors from Grain Valley, Independence, Lee's Summit, Oak Grove and Raytown to celebrate the opening games of the Eastern Jackson County Municipal Challenge. This annual challenge allows city employees from neighboring communities to come together for fun, wellness and fellowship. The city with the highest number of points at the end of the two-week competition will win a trophy which will remain in that city until the next year's competition.

I did not bring home the gold this year but it was a passionate game and I look forward to the 2015-2016 match. Congratulations to first place winner Mike Todd from Grain Valley!

Special thanks to  Councilman Dale Carter for being the event MC and to our commenter Tim Crone.
