Hugh Bolton Way honours local philanthropist
May 2, 2018

Hugh Bolton, an Edmontonian well known for his volunteerism and philanthropy, was honoured at a reception last night when City of Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson announced that the road located along 107 Street NW, between 120 Avenue NW and 123 Avenue NW will be named Hugh Bolton Way. The reception celebrated Bolton’s retirement as Chair of EPCOR’s Board of Directors, after 18 years of service.

During nearly two decades of work with the University of Alberta School of Business, Bolton mentored students, advised faculty, and led one of the School’s most successful fundraising campaigns. He championed EPCOR’s to become one of Edmonton’s largest private-sector supporters of the United Way Capital Campaign, increasing employee donations by five-fold.

Nationally, he led the modernization of the Canadian Diabetes Association, transforming the governance and accountability of one of Canada’s largest and most recognized health charities. Locally, he helped secure the long-term viability of air ambulance services for Edmonton and Northern Alberta through the development of a successful governance and management model for STARS.

Bolton’s leadership in the advancement of corporate, public sector and not-for-profit
governance in Canada; the development of the accounting profession; the evolution of public policy; and the success of some of Canada’s leading organizations has brought benefit and recognition to Edmonton, Alberta and Canada.

The naming was approved by the Naming Committee on December 12, 2017.
