The allegations that a high school teacher was using a Twitter account to share anti-Muslim statements were reported to the NCCM late on Thursday, as well.

"Anti-Muslim sentiment and speech are offensive and hurtful. If the allegations against this teacher are found true, they represent a serious breach of trust by someone in a position of authority," says NCCM's Executive Director Ihsaan Gardee.

"We further welcome the decision by the York Region District School Board (YRDSB) to launch an investigation immediately. We are awaiting the outcome of the investigation and, if the actions are proven, expect appropriate disciplinary measures be taken.

"Our schools are places where the values of tolerance, inclusion and respect should be modeled by teachers in both word and deed. Islamophobic sentiments must be tackled with education and information."

The NCCM has reached out to school officials at the board to offer its support in the way of diversity training as well as to offer its Educators Guide to Islamic Religious Practices, available online and for order.

The NCCM encourages Canadians to report hate incidents and hate crimes to the relevant authorities, as well as to the NCCM.  Earlier this month, an online map was launched to track such incidents.

The NCCM is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit grassroots advocacy organization. It is a leading voice for Muslim civic engagement and the promotion of human rights.
