New Summer Circus Intensive Programs at The Actors Gymnasium

EVANSTON, IL - The Actors Gymnasium has announced the addition of an Adult Summer Circus Intensive (SCI) to their summer scheduling. SCI is an innovative six-week intensive workshop dedicated to physical performance and act creation. The program offers performers the chance to choreograph their own work. In this way, the Summer Circus Intensive fosters the creative and artistic development of the performers in addition to the development of technical skills. Sylvia Hernandez-DiStasi, Dean Evans and area master teachers provide instruction in a variety of circus and performing art disciplines.

 
Class Times & Dates:
Students will have classes 4 days a week, Monday - Thursday. Classes begin June 9th and run through July 18. No class July 4. 

 

Teen Intensive: 4:15-6:15pm

Adult Intensive: 6:15-8:15pm

 

Daily Classes:

Students work with master circus professionals each day on individual circus skills. Students also receive an Open Gym card which provides students with the opportunity to practice their act outside of class without additional cost. 

 

Performances: 

A high point of the SCI experience is the performance. Technical rehearsal takes place Friday, July 18th at 4:15pm. Performances take place July 19th at 4:30 and 7:30 pm and July 20th at 1:00 and 4:00 pm. For tickets to the performance, please visit our Shows page. 

 

Faculty:

Full time faculty includes: Sylvia Hernandez-DiStasi and Javen Ulambayar, with guest artists such as Dean Evans (Chicago Physical Theater). Additional teachers to be announced.

  

Enrollment process:

It is required that students have taken at least one class prior at The Actors Gymnasium or have teacher permission.

Age Qualifications:

Teen Summer Circus Intensive is for students ages 16 and over. 

Adult Summer Circus Intensive is for students ages 18 and over.

 

Fees:

Tuition: $825

**$100 non-refundable deposit for intensive

 

Early Bird Registration:

Early Bird registration is encouraged to save money and secure a spot in this intensive. The Early Bird Discount of $750 is for Adult Intensive only and valid through April 30th. 

 

Location: 

The Actors Gymnasium is located at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center, 927 Noyes Street, Evanston, IL - just off of the Noyes purple line 'L' stop. The Noyes Cultural Arts Center is owned by the City of Evanston and home to over 20 artists and arts organizations offering music, theater, and visual arts programs and studios. The galleries exhibit local artists, with exhibitions changing every two months. 

 

Actors Gymnasium classes are taught in a 3,000 sq/ft gymnasium space that features a 1,600 sq/ft sprung floor and a fully rigged 17 foot ceiling. All aerial equipment such as the Aerial Hoop, Spanish Web, aerial silks, static trapeze and more are provided, as well as the equipment for ground skills such as unicycling, juggling, tight wire and gymnastics. Classes such as dance, or drama may take place in other studios within the Noyes Cultural Arts Center that feature tiled/wooden floors. Padded gymnastic mats and other equipment will be added if necessary.
