VSU Continuing Education ... Bringing Learning to Life
In This Issue
Instructor Spotlight  -
Ronda Paoletti

Ronda Paoletti has inspired adults and children alike over the years at VSU Continuing Education through her "The Joy of Singing" class and our very popular "Broadway Bound" summer camp.
Her accomplishments are impressive and so is her teaching style. Ronda completed her MM at the University of Florida, is a teacher of applied voice, a professional singer, a conductor and director and has won numerous singing awards.
Summer camp students consistently present successful performances each year as they respond to her contagious enthusiasm for musical theater.
"The thought of anyone hearing me sing had mortified me my entire life," says former student, Leslie Jones, "but I really found "The Joy of Singing" with Ronda's hilarious lessons!"

Another great year of Learning in Retirement will wrap up on May 17, with an end-of-year potluck lunch at 11:30 in the auditorium. At that time the newly elected 2013-14 officers will be installed.

A new year of LIR will begin on September 9, so look for the Fall schedule in August.

Camp Discovery for Kids
ages 5 - 17

If your child could outline a perfect summer, it would probably include plenty of playmates and new things to
do every day.
Camp Discovery can be a part of that scenario.
Educators see the benefits of summer camps as lifelong in that they teach a lot of what could be called the informal curriculum of building self-confidence, camp counselor teaching cooperation, teamwork and initiative.

Camp Discovery is now taking registrations! Some of the camps are filling fast, so register as soon as possible, especially if your child has his heart "set" on a particular camp. You receive a $5 early bird discount for each camp if you register by May 31.

New camp features this year include:

*A new $5 per camp sibling discount for 2 or more siblings attending camp during the same week;

girl painting*An extended day option, with pickup until 5:30 pm for those attending an afternoon camp or rec room, for an extra fee of $25 per week;

*And several great new camps, including "Future Architects," "Bookworms," "Music Makers," "Step To It (step dancing)," and "It's Electric."

We are also pleased to be offering French and Spanish language camps especially for teens to help them get a head start on their high school foreign language studies.

Plan now to be a part of Camp Discovery 2013 at VSU Continuing Education.

Swimming Lessons
ages 3 & up
Summertime will surely find most of us looking for creative ways to stay cool. What better way to have fun in the sun and stay cool than to go for a refreshing swim!  In fact, according to the American Red Cross, swimming is the most popular summer activity. However, swimming responsibly means following safety tips that can help you stay safe whenever you are in, on, or around water.

To help you make water safety a priority, VSU Continuing Education offers beginner and intermediate swimming lessons for ages 3 and up starting June 3. Classes runswimming naf through July 19 and will be held at the VSU Student Recreation Center pool.

There will be several evening beginners' sessions for adults only. Classes consist of five 50-minute sessions during one week. (The week of July 1 - 5  is a 4-day week.)

The Continuing Education summer swimming program has been successful for a number of years due in large part to theReggoe expertise of our Red Cross Water Safety Certified lifeguards and instructors like Reggie Merritt.

Reggie is a VSU Senior Chemistry major from Americus, GA. He has been instructing swimming since the age of 14 and has been teaching for Continuing Education for the past four years.

Online Courses
Writing grant proposals to get money to make your project happen is becoming more and more common. Consistently, students are choosing the online resources of VSU to learn the "ins" and "outs" of grant writing.

This month, we are highlighting the online 6 week format Grant Writing courses, which make up just a few of the more than 300 6-week, instructor-paced online professional development, personal enrichment and accredited health care certificate programs courses for which a new section of each course starts monthly.

A to Z Grant Writing (2.4 CEUs) ($99; with 2 PLUs for Teacher Recertification - $109) is our popular course created especially for those individuals who want to get a 'bird's eye' view of the grantwriting process. The course syllabus outlines week by week what topics will be covered, beginning with:

  • what a grant writer does,
  • what kinds of organizations and causes seek grants, and what types of grants are available
  • tips for getting into the grant writing field and for finding funders

Whether the economy is good or bad, grant writers can usually find work easily. In fact, when the economy is bad, the need for services increases. Nonprofit organizations rely heavily on  private grant dollars to support their programs and services. Grants from foundations, corporations, and organizations are crucial to keep programs running, and grant writers are needed for their expertise in securing these funds.

Perform a quick internet search to view current statistics regarding the pay scale for specific fields of grant writing.

Click here to view a listing of our other online Grant Writing courses.

Lessons for each instructor-paced course are released on Wednesdays and Fridays of each week over a six week period.

A new section of each course starts monthly.
