A Word from Sue...

The Continuing Education building was a busy place last month. On Saturday, September 28, court reporters from around Georgia and North Florida were here for their semiannual workshop to earn continuing education credits for relicensure. At the same time, attendees in a grant writing workshop were exploring how to research, identify, and successfully connect with grant funders.

We're working to stay true to our mission which is to enhance the quality of life in the region by providing educational, artistic, cultural, technological, and economic development activities and programs. Hope to see you soon!

 ...personal enrichment

"You got to sing like you don't need the money
Love like you'll never get hurt
You got to dance like nobody's watchin'
It's gotta come from the heart."*

Dancing is fun and it is a good way to get energized. Whether you aspire to 'dance with the stars' or simply explore your own natural rhythms as you learn basic dance patterns, we've got some new opportunities coming soon!

A wide variety of rhythmic patterns form the basis of dance in Africa. Beginning October 22, veteran CE instructor Cheryl Powell will guide you as you move arms, shoulders, chest, hips and feet to the heartbeat of the drums for a revitalizing experience in African Dance

Or you may prefer stepping to the lively and flirtatious Cha Cha Cha. Beginning October 24, instructor Janice Blanchard will show you the basic steps of this Latin-American dance.

For either of these classes, no dance experience is necessary - beginners and all levels of dancers are welcome!

...additional community involvement

Continuing Education continues to partner with VSU's Employee and Organizational Development Department to make university employee training and development opportunities available to the greater community. Check out the following professional workshops we are offering this fall:

LEARNING IN RETIREMENT
An Active Lifestyle

Starting or maintaining a regular exercise routine can be a challenge as you get older, but an active lifestyle for seniors is more important than ever. Regular exercise can help boost energy, maintain your independence, and manage symptoms of illness or pain. Click here for more information from HelpGuide.org about healthy aging and staying active.

"For the most part, when older people lose their ability to do things on their own, it doesn't happen just because they've aged. It's usually because they're not active" according to a National Institutes of Health - Senior Health article. In the words of Benjamin Franklin, "We do not stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing!"

LIR wants to help our seniors "keep playing." We

Pat Hester

are delighted this fall session to have on board instructor Pat Hester who brings her love of dance to our Zumba Gold program. This fun workout class meets twice weekly and has approximately 45 participants!

In 2005, Pat moved with her husband to Valdosta from Florida seeking a different retirement lifestyle. Shortly thereafter, she took an opportunity to begin working with the excercise program at a senior center. Pat has certification in personal training and Zumba Gold.

The unique plan of Zumba Gold works to improve balance, flexibility and cardiovascular strength. It is designed to teach the basic dance steps to anyone, even those requiring chairs or wheel chairs. Click here to learn more about the physiological and psychological benefits of Zumba Gold.

Look for Zumba Gold to be in the LIR schedule for Winter 2013. You won't want to miss it!

ONLINE

Got Digital?

As the technology of digital photography has catapulted the photographic world into the 21st century, most of us have become accustomed on some level to the instantaneous photo experience of digital cameras.

Now, in 2013, according to a PRNewswire-USNewswire release, the iconic National Geographic Magazine is expanding the scope of its visual storytelling by experimenting with digital experiences to find new ways of documenting the world and of allowing readers to interact with content.

Whether you're new to photography or a long-time photographer looking to move comfortably into the new world of digital work, VSU Continuing Education has a slate of instructor-paced online courses that can help you discover the world of digital photography. Discover Digital Photography ($99) will help you explore a broad overview of the basics.

If you are looking to take the photos you've always dreamed of, check out Mastering Your Digital SLR Camera ($99). Other related online courses will discuss photographing people and nature, and some of the Secrets of Better Photography ($99)

Instructor-paced courses begin on a Wednesday in each month.
