Chapter President Kit Gonzales Signing Off
Can you believe it's been two years since the membership voted for me a s Chapter President?  At first, it seemed daunting - two years
But now, after 24 b oard m eetings, 20 c hapter m eetings, 2 holiday luncheon meetings, 2 national conferences, numerous committee meetings and fundraising events , a long with a few thousand e-mails , it seems like the time flew by and I'm sad my term is over.

Because I plan to retire later this summer, I could not continue in an elected position .  As your Immediate Past President,  I can continue to serve the chapter with a little more time o n my hands to get things done.

I believe the current board team was very successful in guiding this chapter forward and I thank them for the teamwork, support, camaraderie, discussions, laughter, professionalism, re spect, and genuine friendship.
  • While we did not produce but one newsletter, we did shift to frequ ent "news you can use" e-mail blasts and readership is up .
  • While our membership remained steady, we participated in the "50/50" membership pilot project and we welcomed many members from the Southern California Chapter.  I anticipate welcoming several more from the recently closed  S an Francisco Bay Area chapter , as well .
  • While our education programs remained strong, this chapter led the way providing live stream feeds of tho se programs via Facebook Live to our "remote" members . That is something with which I hope to remain involved , as the effort made significant changes - not just with in our Chapter, but with SGMP nationwide.
I believe we also met one of my personal goals: to open up communications and be more responsive to the membership.   Let's keep it going!

In 2018, this chapter will celebrate 30 years of outstanding education, networking, and resources.  As the only remaining chapter in California,  it seems a change of chapter name may be in order to reflect our diverse membership from all over the state .   Discussions about that idea will begin next month, w ith members from the two recently closed chapters w ho w ill be attending the NEC in Ft. Lauderdale.

As I turn the gavel over to incoming President Penny Stockdale, I thank YOU all!!  T hank you for supporting me and the board of directors these last two years.  Thank you for stepping up when  needed . Thank you for volunteering where  needed A nd t hank you for providing valuable feedback that helped shape where we head next.
I think I can speak for all of the current board members when I say it was a pleasure to serve YOU.

SGMP to Hold 2018 National Education Conference & Expo in Norfolk, Virginia
The Society of Government Meeting Professionals (SGMP) announced today that its 36th National Education Conference will take place in Norfolk, Virginia, June 5-7, 2018. The Marriott Norfolk Waterside, the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside, and Hilton Norfolk will be the conference hotel partners.
There will be plenty of educational content, attendees will earn at least eight education contact hours that include multiple blocks of specific training, and the
Certified Government Meeting Professional course will be offered as a special pre-conference program.

This will be the third time that Norfolk will host the conference, having previously hosted in 2002 and 2011.
