SGMP 2017 President's Award
National Education Conference
Presented by National Board President Michelle Milligan

"The person that is receiving this President's Award has been helpful to me for the last two years. This person has assisted in keeping the national board on target for our 2016 conference. This person is a lover of wine, which I'm sure many of you in the room are as well. I believe I have received more emails from this person than any other chapter leader in the room. This person has been a huge cheerleader of the national board as well as a person that keeps us on task. This individual comes from one of the larger chapters within our society, and as many of you may know via Facebook or from conversations, this person has officially turned in her retirement papers, she also moves to immediate past president as of July 1, 2017. This person is Sacramento President Kit Gonzales. Congratulations Kit!"

I had no clue who President Milligan was talking about until she got to the part about turning in retirement papers and moving to the Immediate Past President position. WHAT?? And, she said she receives "more emails from this person than any other chapter leader..."

HUH? I'll take that as a compliment, and I am proud of the fact that I did ask questions and challenge processes during my term as your Chapter President.

After learning in early 2016 the California rules and regulations about the use of alcohol for raffle prizes, I kept the "national board on target"  by suggesting they remove wine prizes from the raffles that were set for the national education conference in San Diego. I reasoned that even with the "everyone does it" attitude, we, as a government entity, could not disregard the law and/or assume the liability that came with such disregard. Like our own chapter, they quickly learned alternative fundraising methods to replace that lost income.

This past year, I questioned, and even challenged some of the processes and deadlines for the national award evaluations of chapter programs. I believe that is what Ms. Milligan means when she says, "keeps us on task."

In any case, I was very proud to accept this award, and while speechless on stage, I was able to shout out that "Sacramento is IN the house."

Thank you all for your continued support of this great Chapter!

Communication received from Jan Thor, President of the Pacific Northwest Chapter:

Hello Kit, Robin, and Crystal:

I wanted to CONGRATULATE you, and your Chapter, again, on the wonderful awards you received at NEC. You worked really hard, and that work was nicely recognized and appropriately recognized this year (and it was fun to witness your excitement).

I love the fact that you brought programs to remote members of your chapter via live streaming-such a wonderful opportunity for members who rarely have the opportunity to receive chapter education to do so. Thank you for doing that, as it inspired us to find a way to offer something similar to our members (they had been asking for it for quite a while).  We have just recently, in the last four months, been able to provide our own remote members the opportunity to receive chapter education; only we do it through Skype. Those members have been so happy and thankful to be able to participate, not only to receive the education, but also to receive the contact hours they need to keep their certifications current.  So thank you for inspiring us to make that happen for them.

Your winning "Program of the Year" sounded like it was a very interesting and informative program, like I know all of yours are!  It is so cool to bring programs to our members that really teach them, and train them, and show them how to be better meeting planners and suppliers!  We found it hard to select just one program to submit for the competition because, like you, we present so many really great programs.
And Kit, your passion for SGMP shines so strong, and I know it inspires others to get involved and take advantage of all our organization has to offer.  So glad you were recognized for that passion!
Continued success to you and your wonderful chapter.

Your friend,
Jan Thor, CMP
