CELEBRATION OF
HOLY COMMUNION
Holy communion will be celebrated in worship this Sunday. We practice open communion at SMUMC, inviting to the Lord's table all who seek to respond to Christ's love, including from other traditions. You may receive the elements of the bread and the cup kneeling around the altar, from servers standing near the chancel, or at your seat, if you desire.

WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY
This Sunday during worship we will be observing World Communion Sunday. This celebration is observed by several Christian denominations, taking place on the first Sunday of every October, that promotes Christian unity and ecumenical cooperation. In the hall leading to the sanctuary, you will notice a table with many kinds of breads that you may sample, before or after service. During the service, we will hear the phrase "This is the Bread of Life" in various languages, even as we share Holy Communion. We look forward to worshipping with you this weekend.

On September 13th, the Stewardship Team opened our 2016 financial campaign with an all-church lunch and conversation. Individuals from various ministry areas and committees of the church shared both great things happening in the St. Mark's community, and goals and needs for the year ahead.
Your financial commitment helps to support and grow these ministries inside our building and beyond: mission outreach, worship, hospitality, programs for all ages, and more. Please do prayerfully consider what financial commitment you will make to St. Mark's for 2016. Also, please consider filling out an
Estimate of Giving card, and return it to the church office or place it in the offering plate by Sunday, October 18th. This information guides church leadership committees in important budget decisions they are making for the year ahead. THIS SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 6th
"BACKPACK BUDDIES" OFFERING
On the first Sunday of each month we collect food items for the Community Kitchen's "Backpack Buddies" program. Approximately 250 children from eight local elementary school who are in need are sent home with a backpack of food on Fridays. These backpacks help families meet their basic weekend food needs. Our contributions help to keep the pantry well stocked with healthy, enjoyable foods.
Suggested items include: Individual fruit cups, instant oatmeal, macaroni & cheese, bread mixes, easy-to-prepare food mixes, granola/fruit/cereal bars, small boxes of cereal, canned/pouch chicken/tuna, and dried fruit.

"BIBLE BANTER," 9:30am
The Bible Banter Adult Sunday School class meets in Room 11 each Sunday morning from 9:30am-10:15am. The class uses the Scripture text for the morning's sermon as a discussion-starter.
We look at the passage in its larger context, and sometimes explore a bit of Bible-writing history. We offer some thoughts on what the morning's sermon might look like, based on the Scripture the pastor has selected. We leave time to discuss implications of the Scripture for our own lives, and often even delve into topics far afield of the morning's original topic. You are invited to bring some breakfast goodies into Room 11 and join the conversation.

SUNDAY SCHOOL SIGN-IN
PROCEDURES FOR CHILDREN & YOUTH
In order to provide a comfortable, safe and nurturing space for all children and youth, please be reminded of the Sunday morning "sign-in routine."
1. Visit your child's Sunday school room before going to the sanctuary for worship. Sign your child into his/her classroom (by age) and meet the Sunday school teachers. Each child will receive a name tag.
2. Children and youth participate in the beginning of worship, with their families, in the sanctuary. Children are invited to participate in children's moment on the altar area. If a child would like to bring a parent or adult helper to children's moment for comfort, we welcome everyone.
3. Following children's moment, a Sunday school volunteer will walk the children to their Sunday school classrooms. If children have not been signed into the room before worship, an adult from the family can do that as they walk to the classroom after children's moment.
4. Following the worship service, adults sign their children out of their Sunday school classes.

grade and older are welcome to join us at St. Mark's in the Youth Room for a short youth group meeting before the 2ndSunday@6 worship service.
This youth group meeting will be dedicated to planning our service to the Crop Maze that will be on Saturday, October 31. Our youth group will host a snack table at the Crop Maze that will also educate participants in a creative way about local and global steps to eliminate hunger and poverty.
This is an educational service project that is a convenient hands-on way to make a difference in Bloomington. At 6:00 pm, youth group will join the 2ndSunday@6 worship that will engage the congregation about Monroe County Habitat for Humanity.

Alisha Mustafa, who had been serving as our Administrative Assistant, has moved to Fort Wayne. Alisha has a special gift of connecting with people, and offering kindness and care to all. We wish her well in the new ways she will bless the world. Last Sunday in worship, we offered a blessing for Alisha, Matt and their beautiful son, Malcolm. They will be missed.
We are fortunate that Claire Schaffer is going to continue with us in an interim role in the office, while we are engaged in the process of hiring for this position. Claire had been serving in a short-term role as a communications consultant. We are grateful for all the gifts she is sharing with us in this time of transition. You can e-mail Claire at

Kerry will offer a reflection during worship, the Band will share great music, and we will all be challenged to address local and global needs. Following worship, all ages are invited to a time of conversation and hands-on service projects. In our conversation, we will discuss hurdles in overcoming poverty, and also explore together about the possibility of an Interfaith build sometime in the future. All ladies in 9th - 12th grade are welcome to have lunch at Moe's after the 10:30am worship service on Sunday,October 11th. We will gather in the youth room and walk together to Moe's (just behind St. Mark's near Best Buy). Youth can be picked up at Moe's or after the lunch back at St. Mark's. Lunch will be provided or youth may bring a donation. Senior High Girls' Group is a chance to share a little bit about the ups and downs of senior high life! Join us for a good time and casual fellowship!

All are welcome to the fellowship at Solsberry Hill Retreat Center for games, campfire, hiking, fishing and food. Come out for the evening fellowship, choose to campout if you wish, or drive out for the 8am Sunday Worship service.
Please bring nut-free foods to share with others for Saturday dinner. Bring your own snacks, drinks, and breakfast meal. St. Mark's will provide s'mores, water, and disposable serving ware. Kitchen facilities and indoor restrooms are available for all guests. Cabins with shared sleeping spaces or private and family suites are available for $10 per person. CROP Maze of World Poverty
The CROP Maze of World Poverty will be held in Garton Hall October 31, 1:00-4:00pm. This giant walk-through maze will also be an educational game exploring issues about world poverty, hosted by a dozen local interfaith groups.
An optional CROP Walk will occur simultaneously around the perimeter of St. Mark's. Our youth will be hosting the table about local food banks, which will also be the snack station.

Help the Mission Guatemala Team celebrate their upcoming mission trip to Guatemala. Guests will enjoy homemade dinner and desserts that have international flavor like enchiladas, rice, tropical fruits, flan, apple empanadas, and much more. In addition to the amazing aromas, guests will be entertained throughout the evening with live music from St. Mark's youth and The Band (The Band, who dynamically lead worship music for
2ndSunday@6 worship service, have graciously agreed to move elements of that worship to Fiesta De Guatemala on November 1st). Creative games will keep us laughing like Bidding Karaoke, Jar-Wars between Jimmy and Mary Beth, and more (Don't forget your wallet to play these fundraising games). Bring your whole family, neighbors, and visiting family, all are welcome! Crafts and games will be available for children. Tickets are $10 or 2 for $15. Tickets can be purchased in Garton Hall every Sunday in October before or after the 10:30 worship service or by coming to the office at St. Mark's. Donations can be of your time (babysitting, craft classes), talent (handmade items such as hats and scarves, baked goods, frozen meals), or treasure (tickets to a sporting event, time at a family cottage). RESPONDING TO THE REFUGEE CRISIS IN EUROPE
The refugee crisis in Europe has already reached tragic proportions, and is growing more challenging daily. By the end of 2015, the number of refugees in Europe (from Syria and other lands in conflict) is expected to be 4.7 million. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is working to help provide relief where it is most needed. Financial donations are greatly needed. If you are able to give, please make your check to "St. Mark's United Methodist" with "UMCOR-Refugee Crisis" in the memo line. You may bring this offering directly to the church office, or drop it in the offering plate. 100% of all money donated will go directly to the children, men and women most in need.

SUPPORTING OUR MISSION TRIP TO MISSION GUATEMALA
In March of 2016, twenty St. Mark's youth and adults will travel to Guatemala to assist our former pastor Tom Heaton at
Mission Guatemala
, a health and education project for villages in the poorest country in Central America. To defray the cost of $1500 per participant, we will be raising funds for this trip throughout the year. Here are some ways to contribute:
- Sunday morning breakfasts in Garton Hall once a month.

- One-on-one sponsorship of a trip participant
- Parents' Night Out babysitting events throughout the year
- Special church wide events in November and February

Do you enjoy being a part of a child's faith discovery? Please consider volunteering some of your time as a Sunday school teacher. We graciously accept any time commitment that you have available. HANDBELL RINGERS & CHOIR SINGERS!
Please consider joining the Handbell Choir or the Chancel Choir. Willingness to learn and some familiarity with reading music are the only requirements to join bells, but just the ability to sing is the requirement in Chancel Choir. Come be part of the music ministry and share your love of music.
