THIS SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 7TH
"BACKPACK BUDDIES" OFFERING
On the first Sunday of each month, we collect food items for the Community Kitchen's "Backpack Buddies" program. Approximately 100 children in need, from five local elementary schools, are sent home with a backpack of food on Fridays. These backpacks help families meet their basic weekend food needs.
Suggested items include: Easy to prepare food items (instant mashed potatoes, dried soups, beans, rice or pasta meals, etc.); Healthy snack crackers; Small pop top cans of vegetables; Individual fruit cups, Instant oatmeal, Macaroni & Cheese, Bread mixes, Meal helpers (like Hamburger/Chicken/Tuna helpers), Granola/fruit/cereal bars, Small boxes of cereal, Canned/pouch chicken/tuna, and Dried fruit.

MARDI GRAS PANCAKE DINNER
Fill up on pancakes, sausage, and fruit while listening to festive music with friends and family in Garton Hall at St. Mark's. Join us for this awesome annual event. Live music will be provided by "Bloomington's Best Quintet +1" - Jim Jeffries will play in the band!
This year, the pancake dinner will support Operation Friendship International, Appalachian Service Project, and Guatemala Mission Trip Team. Music, face-painting, and great food will complete your Mardi Gras celebration! Bring your neighbors and tell your friends. All are welcome! Dinner will be served from 5:00pm-7:00pm; take-out available.

As we begin our 2016 Lenten journey, all are invited to gather together in the Sanctuary for either Ash Wednesday service. Reverend Jimmy Moore will lead these services of word, music, reflection, and the imposition of the ashes. The noon service will be brief to enable those who are on their lunch hour to participate. The Chancel Choir will sing at the 7:00pm service. Childcare is available at 7:00pm, as well, in Room 25.

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL
This Sunday, February 7th, Pilgrims will continue a study: "The Book of Genesis" by Great Courses featuring Prof. Gary A. Rendsburg as the lecturer. Lecture 5: "The Ancient Near East" is a study with emphasis on the Near East - Egypt, Canaan and Mesopotamia. Abraham is born in Mesopotamia, migrates to Canaan and visits Egypt. Jacob is born in Canaan and dies in Egypt. Joseph is born in Mesopotamia, moves to Canaan with his family at a young age and spends his entire adult life in Egypt. Thus the Near East is important in understanding the Bible and in particular Genesis.
The Pilgrims meet at 9:15am in Room 13. All are welcome! Come join us for the video lecture and resulting discussion.

The Nomads Class meets in Room 8 with the lessons starting at 9:30am after announcements, coffee, and snacks. The class ends at 10:15. Visitors are welcome on any Sunday.
The Nomad's Class enjoys Sunday morning discussions based on spiritual, religious, and social justice topics.
"BIBLE BANTER," 9:30am
The Bible Banter Adult Sunday School class meets in Room 11 each Sunday morning from 9:30am-10:15am. The class uses the Scripture text for the morning's sermon as a discussion-starter.
We look at the passage in its larger context, and sometimes explore a bit of Bible-writing history. We offer some thoughts on what the morning's sermon might look like, based on the Scripture the pastor has selected. We leave time to discuss implications of the Scripture for our own lives, and often even delve into topics far afield of the morning's original topic. You are invited to bring some breakfast goodies into Room 11 and join the conversation.

PROCEDURES FOR CHILDREN & YOUTH
In order to provide a comfortable, safe and nurturing space for all children and youth, please read the procedure for Sunday morning sign-in.
1. Before worship sign your child in at his or her Sunday school room and meet the teacher. Each child will receive a name tag.
2. Children and youth participate in the beginning of worship, with their families, in the Sanctuary. Children are invited to participate in children's moment on the altar area. If a child would like to bring a parent or adult helper to children's moment for comfort, we welcome everyone.
3. Following children's moment, a Sunday school volunteer will walk the children to their Sunday school classrooms. If children have not been signed into the room before worship, an adult from the family can do that as they walk to the classroom after children's moment.
4. Following the worship service, adults sign their children out of their Sunday school classes.

SUPER BOWL 2016 FOOD DRIVE
The Kindergarten class of the St. Mark's Nursery School and Kindergarten invites all families and friends to join the fun of their annual Super Bowl Food Drive. It is easy and hopefully will bring in lots of food during the winter months for those in need in our community. Here are the simple directions:
- Pick your team: Denver Broncos or North Carolina Panthers.
- Fill your bag(s) with high protein items like canned meats, nut butters OR canned or packaged fruit.
- Leave your food bags on one of the tables at the East Entrance by the Playgrounds that has your team's name on it: Broncos or Panthers.
The Kindergarten class will collect the food February 1st - February 9th and deliver them to Hoosier Hills Food Bank. Results of the favored team and weight of food collected will be announced. Go Team St. Mark's!

Please join us in Room 15 for membership classes if you are ready to become a member or if you are interested in learning more about becoming a member of St. Mark's. For families with children, there will be infant/toddler care in Room 25. Pre-school age and older children are welcome to join Bridget McIntyre in Room 8 for Celebration! Worship for Children and Families.
We will spend time getting to know one another, learning more about the church and our membership process, exploring questions, and talking with others about the many ways to get involved in the life and ministry of St. Mark's.
Several persons have indicated an interest in membership, and we know others may be interested as well. Whether you are new to this community or have been a part of St. Mark's for many years and are now considering membership, we hope that you will attend. New members will be received during worship Sunday, February 28th. Please contact Jimmy Moore or Mary Beth Morgan if you have questions. If you are interested in membership but have a conflict with class or joining dates, we can work with you and your schedule. We look forward to sharing this time with you as we continue to grow as a church community.

Join the St. Mark's Hikers to hike/walk 200 miles in 2016 in celebration of Indiana's 200th birthday. It's easy. YOUTH SERVICE PROJECT FOR INTERFAITH WINTER SHELTER
Youth are invited to make 6 gallons of chili beginning at 4:00pm in St. Mark's kitchen. At 7:00pm we will take all of the dinner to First United Methodist Church (FUMCB) and set up beds for the shelter guests there. Youth can choose to come to part or the entire service project.
Youth and youth families are needed to contribute chili ingredients, cheese cubes, cookies, apples, and oranges for the shelter meal. Please contact Bridget McIntyre if you can participate in the service project, if you can donate chili ingredients or other meal items, or if you can drive youth to FUMCB.

WildCare,Inc., a local wildlife rehab volunteer organization, is gearing up for the spring birthing and hatching season. WildCare,Inc. cares for ill, injured, and orphaned wildlife; helping them recover and releasing them back to the wild. WildCare,Inc. relies on donations and does not receive any state of federal money. We need both financial donations and volunteers. Opportunities range from animal care, fundraising, and leadership positions to carpentry and maintenance. WildCare,Inc. will provide all training. ST. MARK'S NURSERY SCHOOL & KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION & OPEN HOUSE
Registration for the 2016-2017 school year begins February 1, 2016 for families which are currently enrolled in St. Mark's Nursery School & Kindergarten. Beginning on February 15, 2016 new families may begin enrollment. Enrollment will remain open and ongoing.
An Open House is scheduled for Monday-Friday, February 8th-12th from 9:30am-11:00am. (Please note that Open House for Infant and Onsies Rooms is Monday-Thursday only.)
New families are encouraged to come for a tour.

SUPPORTING OUR MISSION TRIP TO MISSION GUATEMALA
In March of 2016, seventeen St. Mark's youth and adults will travel to Guatemala to assist our former pastor Tom Heaton at Mission Guatemala, a health and education project for villages in the poorest country in Central America.
We are close to our fundraising goals and appreciate all the support we have received in previous months. In the remaining weeks before the team travels; here are some ways you can still contribute:
- Sunday morning breakfast in Garton Hall on February 21st.
- Parents Night Out on Friday, February 5th, 6:00pm - 8:30pm at St. Mark's. $20/child, quality childcare in a safe environment.
- Celebrate Mardi Gras on Tuesday, February 9th, 5:00pm - 7:00pm at St. Mark's. Operation Friendship, Appalachian Service Project and Mission Guatemala Trip Teams will host the annual community event and fundraiser.
- Support youth and adult travelers by writing a check to St. Mark's (with Guatemala Mission Trip in the memo). Even small amounts can help us reach our fundraising goals.
- Support "Jar Wars" between Jimmy and Mary Beth (in Garton Hall on Sundays).
- Donate to "St. Mark's Bloomington Mission Guatemala Trip" on YouCaring.com
- While many other expenses remain, thanks to your generosity we are within a few hundred dollars of reading one of our goals for all 9 youth to receive a 1/2 scholarship toward airfare fees for Mission Guatemala.

CAN YOU GIVE A FEW HOURS A MONTH TO SUPPORT THE INTERFAITH WINTER SHELTER?
Do you have a couple of hours to spare every other Wednesday morning? A group of St. Mark's folks do the clean-up shift at the Interfaith Winter Shelter, and the group could use one or two more people on the team. The work takes place at First United Church, 2420 E 3rd St (behind the Credit Union). The clean-up shift starts at 6:00am sharp, but the work is usually finished by 7:30am. RESPONDING TO THE REFUGEE CRISIS IN EUROPE
The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is helping to provide relief. Financial donations are greatly needed. Checks can be written to "St. Mark's UMC" with "UMCOR-Refugee
Crisis" in the memo line, and brought to the church office, or placed in the offering plate. 100% of all money donated will go directly to the children, men and women most in need.
