APPALACHIA SERVICE PROJECT MISSION TRIP
The St. Mark's Appalachia Service Project (ASP) Team leaves for their week-long mission trip on Sunday, July 24th. Join a "Send-Off" of the ASP Team at St. Mark's at 6:00am this Sunday, July 24th where we will encourage the team and pray for their safe, prosperous, and spiritual success while on mission. This year, the team will be serving with the community in Martin County, Kentucky. We keep the ASP team in our prayers, and look forward to hearing about their experiences when they return. ASP team members will share some of their experiences in Worship on Sunday, July 31st as part of our "Celebrating the Call of All Christians" Sunday.

CELEBRATING THE CALL TO MINISTRY
JillAnn Meunier, a seminary student at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC, will preach the sermon. JillAnn was baptized at St. Mark's, and is taking Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at Bloomington Hospital this summer. This is a Sunday in which we seek to enhance the "Culture of Call"-creating an environment in which members are encouraged to consider various forms of Christian Ministry as a life vocation.
There will also be a Mission Moment to invite contributions for the Reverend Chuck Myers Scholarship fund, which is designated to
provide scholarship assistance for UMC seminary students. Chuck served churches in the South Indiana Conference, including St. Mark's,
and also served as a district superintendent. Chuck saw pastoral care as his strongest asset. He also possessed a fine baritone singing voice which he loved to share by preaching "sermons in song." Chuck's wife, Beth, continues to bless us at St. Mark's with her wisdom, faith, and kind and generous spirit.

Children and Youth Sunday School will be offered on the full, regular schedule this Sunday, July 24th.

NEXT SUNDAY, JULY 31st
CHILDREN AND YOUTH WORSHIP LEADERSHIP & SANCTUARY SUNDAY
All children and youth are welcome to participate in leadership roles in the July 31
st
worship service. Children and youth are welcome to be greeters (hand out bulletins), acolytes (light candles), liturgists (lead a prayer or read the scripture), create the bulletin cover, or share any other leadership gift with the congregation. There are opportunities for all ages. Please contact Mary Beth Morgan if your child would like to participate in a special way on July 31st.
July 31st is also the 5th Sunday of the month when we invite all children and youth to experience the full worship service. Children and Youth Sunday School DOES NOT meet on July 31st. Children's activity packets and picture books are available in the back of the sanctuary near the comfortable rocking chairs. Infant and toddler care continues from 9:30am - 11:30am in rooms 24 and 25. Childcare will be available for children ages 4 to 6th grade in room 8, during the sanctuary worship service.
SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS
SEEKING A SUNDAY SCHOOL VOLUNTEER & NURSERY CAREGIVER
With the leadership transitions in the Nursery and Sunday school, we have two immediate needs to fill. Please consider being a volunteer Sunday school teacher. Although we have a need in the 3rd - 6th grade age group, we welcome a volunteer for any age group. This is a monthly commitment that doesn't take too much time. A curriculum and materials are provided. All efforts are made to accommodate volunteers to make the experience enjoyable and meaningful.
A paid childcare position is open for the Sunday morning nursery. This position is on Sunday mornings from 9:30 am - 12:00 pm. St. Mark's is seeking a nurturing adult who can provide sound references and a love for infant and toddlers. This caregiver does not need to be a part of the St. Mark' congregation.

The Tower of Babel (Gen. 11) is humanity's final fail. It may parody the Babylonian ziqqurats, thought to be bridges between heaven and earth. Such bridges are not built through independent human initiative; they require divine partnerships, as the next several lectures on the "patriarchal sagas" (Genesis 12-50) reveal. Genesis 12, Abrams's introduction, threatens to repeat the disasters of the primeval history, yet Abram not only survives but thrives. His story provokes, but does not answer questions of human and heavenly responsibility, as close reading demonstrates. Promised "a great nations", Abram's circumstances cast doubt on the promise; he himself is very old (seventy-five at his departure, Gen. 12:4); his (only) wife, Sarai, is infertile (Gen. 11:30); and his nephew, Lot, whom he takes to Canaan (anticipating that Lot will be his heir?), separates from him (Gen. 13) and moves to Sodom. Canaan's famine prompts a sojourn in Egypt (a scene repeated by subsequent generations of Hebrews).

Come to Room 10 and join these Sunday morning discussions with the Nomads. All are welcome to join in, even without reading the book!

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL
The Bible Banter Adult Sunday School class meets in Room 11 each Sunday morning from 9:30am-10:15am. The class uses the Scripture text for the morning's sermon as a discussion-starter.
We look at the passage in its larger context, and sometimes explore a bit of Bible-writing history. We offer some thoughts on what the morning's sermon might look like, based on the Scripture the pastor has selected. We leave time to discuss implications of the Scripture for our own lives, and often even delve into topics far afield of the morning's original topic. You are invited to bring some breakfast goodies into Room 11 and join the conversation.

CELEBRATING THE CALL OF ALL CHRISTIANS
This worship service at 10:30am will celebrate the calling all Christians have to serve God and others in the world. During worship, those attending will be invited to bring some symbol of their work or service in the world and to place their symbol in the chancel area. Breakfast that morning will be provided by retired UMC clergy and families, and all donations will go to the Chuck Myers Scholarship Fund.

THE COMPLETE PRODUCTION OF GODSPELL JR.
- AND THE CASTING CALL IS STILL OPEN!
Our worship service will center around a production of the musical Godspell, Jr. This hour-long adaptation of the original Broadway show is based on the Gospel of Matthew and traces the life of Jesus from his baptism through his crucifixion. If you were here on Vacation Bible School Sunday, you experienced a few scenes from our talented cast. On August 21st, the cast will present the entire drama, weaving the parables, songs, and lessons into what promises to be a memorable morning.
