SUNDAY, JULY 3RD, 10:30AM SANCTUARY SERVICE
BACKPACK BUDDIES OFFERING
On the first Sunday of every month at the 10:30am worship service, you
are welcome to bring food items for the Community Kitchen Backpack
Buddies program. Through this program, each Friday, approximately 250
children in need from local elementary schools are sent home with a
backpack of food. Children are also provided food during Summer Break.
These backpacks help meet basic weekend food needs of their families.
A list of items is below. Please place the Backpack Buddies offering on the
altar in worship on the first Sunday of every month, or you may leave your
items during the week in the collection box in Garton Hall. This month you
are also welcome to bring items on Sunday, July 10th.
Backpack Buddies Food List
- Individual fruit cups (applesauce, tropical fruit, pears, etc.)
- Instant Oatmeal (individual portions)
- Macaroni & Cheese
- Small boxes of cereal
- Easy-to-prepare food items (instant mashed potatoes, dried soups,
- beans, meal helpers, rice or pasta meals, etc.)
- Granola/fruit/cereal bars
- Dried fruit (raisins, cranberries, cherries, tropical fruit, etc.)
- Canned or pouch chicken or tuna
- Small bread mixes (cornbread, muffin, biscuit, etc.)
SUPPORT FOR THOSE AFFECTED BY FLOODS IN WEST VIRGINIA
THROUGH UNITED METHODIST COMMITTEE ON RELIEF (UMCOR)
Hundreds of homes have been destroyed, and many more damaged, from severe flooding in West Virginia. Financial contributions are needed. Checks can be made out to "St. Mark's" with "West Virginia" in the memo line. We will forward all contributions to UMCOR. We keep in our prayers those who have lost love ones in this disaster, and those who are healing and rebuilding their lives and communities.

All are welcome to be part of the planning team for this year's picnic, a
church-wide celebration which will take place Sunday, August 21st.
Each year, we look forward to this great event, filled with food, friends,
games, and activities for all ages!
The planning team will meet Monday, July 11th from 6:00pm-7:00pm in Room 10. If you cannot attend the planning meeting, but would like to be a part

STYLE SHOW & TEA
Celebrate Monroe County United Ministries provision of emergency food and other services as well as affordable, quality childcare. Women from all over Monroe County and surrounding area churches are invited to "Fun, Food, and Fellowship Style Show and Tea" presented by Chico's and St. Mark's United Methodist Women. No admission, but a free will offering will be taken for MCUM. Since we plan for approximately 200 women, please consider providing food, preparation, or cleanup. THANK YOU BRIGITTE AND DEB; TWO WONDERFUL TEACHERS!
On Sunday mornings, our youngest children at St. Mark's have been blessed by the loving care of volunteer and paid caregivers. Brigitte Colon is a regular Sunday morning caregiver that needs to move on from St. Mark's because of other employment needs. Brigitte's kind and gentle presence will be missed by many, especially the children and families who have come to trust and look forward to her care-giving. We wish Brigitte well as she moves forward in her journey of caring for children in her other work places. Thank you Brigitte.
Another familiar face in St. Mark's children's ministry is Deb Davis. Deb, among many other roles at St. Mark's, has been a monthly volunteer Sunday school teacher with the 3rd - 6th grade students. Deb dearly cares for her students and families and expresses that in her creativity and time shared each month in Sunday school. Deb is ready to move on and share her time differently at St. Mark's and we thank her for her amazing role as Sunday school teacher.
SEEKING A SUNDAY SCHOOL VOLUNTEER AND NURSERY CAREGIVER
With the leadership transitions in the Nursery and Sunday school, we have two immediate needs to fill. Please consider being a volunteer Sunday school teacher. Although we have a need in the 3rd - 6th grade age group, we welcome a volunteer for any age group. This is a monthly commitment that doesn't take too much time. A curriculum and materials are provided. All efforts are made to accommodate volunteers to make the experience enjoyable and meaningful.
A paid childcare position is open for the Sunday morning nursery. This position is on Sunday mornings from 9:30 am - 12:00 pm. St. Mark's is seeking a nurturing adult who can provide sound references and a love for infant and toddlers. This caregiver does not need to be a part of the St. Mark' congregation.

SUNDAY, JULY 3rd: LECTURE #1
"IN THE BEGINNING (GENESIS 1)"
Prof. Amy-Jill Levine - Vanderbilt University Divinity School
The opening lecture introduces not only the content of the Old Testament/Tanakh but also a number of issues - historical, theological, and aesthetic - involved in its interpretation. Following a brief description of biblical materials and the means by which they may be appreciated, we turn to several critical tools that are useful for gaining a deeper appreciation of Scripture and some of the technical terms used in its academic study. The general discussion concludes by noting a few biblical contributions to Western culture. At last entering the text, we begin "in the beginning", with the first chapter of Genesis, examining test cases for the diversity of interpretive approaches.

The Nomads class is now using Anne Lamott's 2013 book, Stitches: A Handbook on Meaning, Hope and Repair to inspire their discussion.

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL
The Bible Banter Adult Sunday School class meets in Room 11 each Sunday morning from 9:30am-10:15am. The class uses the Scripture text for the morning's sermon as a discussion-starter.
We look at the passage in its larger context, and sometimes explore a bit of Bible-writing history. We offer some thoughts on what the morning's sermon might look like, based on the Scripture the pastor has selected. We leave time to discuss implications of the Scripture for our own lives, and often even delve into topics far afield of the morning's original topic. You are invited to bring some breakfast goodies into Room 11 and join the conversation.
