Spacing Between Children Varies by Maternal Characteristics

Most parents in the United States have at least two children, and the length of time between births is linked to the well-being of mothers and children. In 2013, mothers spaced their second and third births about three years apart. The spacing between births varies, though, by mother's union status at the prior birth. Among those with at least two children, mothers who were single at their first birth had their second birth about three-and-a-half years later. Mothers who were cohabiting or married at their first birth had their next birth more quickly, just under three years later. For more information about birth spacing, including trends over the past 25 years, see our two new profiles, Variation in Birth Spacing by Family Context (FP-17-13) and Variation in Birth Spacing by Maternal Characteristics (FP-17-14)
