  Exciting News from our Program!
Citrus College has a Gold Record!

Last July, Avi Kaplan, Scott Hoying, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola, and Mitch Grassi, the group that makes up the popular Acapella Singing Group, Pentatonix,  recorded the song, “Na Na” from their latest self-titled album in the Citrus Recording Studios.   Tim Jaquette, the Supervisor of the Recording Studios and resident “expert sound engineer” was there to make sure the group sounded its very best.

Avi Kaplan, a graduate of Mt. Sac Community College, referred the group to our studios, since he used to record here during his time in the Vocal Jazz Group at Mt. Sac.  We are so proud of a local alum making it big!

In February 2016, the album became certified as Gold and is being displayed in the Recording Arts building.  Check it out!

New Photography Program Takes Flight

During the fall semester of 2016 Citrus College revamped its photography program.  The curriculum within the photography program has been revised to reflect current technology in the photography industry.  Part of the transition included the acquisition of a DJI Phantom 4 camera drone.   The drone curriculum of Photography 205 includes:

  • Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) small unmanned aircraft system (sUAS) rules & regulations
  • Compass calibration
  • Requirements for recreational vs. commercial pilots
  • Why drones crash
  • Proper flight execution including: ascend, descend, pitch, roll and yaw
  • Still and video image capture
As students practice camera operation and drone flight on campus, they have become quite fond of the new tool and adoringly named the drone “Fiona.”  Currently the Photography 205 students are using the drone for a class project to capture aerial imagery of the campus for use in an image campaign of Citrus College.  For more information about the photography program please contact: akonya@citruscollege.edu

Citrus Theatre Arts Department Goes to the Prestigious
American College Theatre Festival

Twelve Citrus Theatre students were nominated by industry professionals to compete in the festival over February 13-17, 2017 in Mesa, AZ. .  Performing monologues and scenes, the students competed against other students from  two and four-year colleges and universities from California, Utah, Arizona, Hawaii and Nevada. They had the opportunity to present their work for evaluation from professional theatre artists, audition for professional theatre companies and schools, take part in master classes offered by leading professionals in the industry, and collaborate and network with fellow up and coming artists from other academic institutions.

Nathan Cabrera and his scene partner Jason Whatley were among 16 students to compete in the Final Round in the Irene Ryan Acting Competition. Citrus College represented 1 of only 6 schools in the entire region to ascend to this level. Nathan received a full-scholarship to CSU Summer Arts in Camera Acting!  Congratulations to Nathan!

Citrus Student Jessica Pineda was selected to take part in the Stage Management Scholarship Competition where she presented her work on a recent Citrus production and took part in a series of interviews and workshops. Of the over 60 Stage Management students nominated to attend the festival Jessica was also an eventual finalist. Additionally, student Abel Martinez was selected to serve as an assistant director during the festival alongside a professional industry veteran. While not a competition for Abel, it was a high honor to be one of only a handful selected and the play he worked on took home several awards.  Great job, Jessica and Abel!

Perhaps the most understated but just as important aspect of the festival was the opportunity for our students to connect and build relationships with students and professionals from around our region. Our students have now moved beyond the bubble of their own institution and now have contacts with potential collaborators in their field of study that will soon span out across the globe.
