Professional Development
Edie will host another short book club on reading comprehension. We will use the book 7 Keys to Comprehension and meet for 4 consecutive weeks. Books are available in the Literacy Connects library. Our sessions will be Friday mornings from 9:30 - 11:30 am at Literacy Connects and will run from January 27 - February 17, 2017. Click here to register!

Conversations on Writing
Interested in some fresh ideas for working on writing with your students? Join Nancy and our writing tutors on December 6 from 2:30 - 4:00 pm for a conversation on:
  • writing miscues -- knowing when to correct and when not to correct
  • from the research -- a writing strategy for adult learners

Refresher Trainings
If it has been over two years since you took our Foundations training, you might consider taking it again! Now that you have some experience and knowledge, come and join us for a refresher training -- What did you miss the first time? What makes sense now that you have been tutoring? What did you forget that might help you out?

Our next training cohort meets on Tuesday nights and Saturdays in February. Come for as many sessions as you'd like! See the PD page for days and times and registration.

Refresher trainings are great opportunities for some new ideas! E mail Nancy with any questions.

Office Closures
The Literacy Connects offices will be closed on  Friday, December 23 through Monday, January 2  for the holiday break.  Happy Holidays!

Language and Literacy Acquisition

We will soon begin a pilot program working with refugee students who have few or no literacy skills and emerging English language fluency. These students need a blend of English language acquisition and basic reading and writing help.

Tutoring will be one-to-one or in small groups. Special training and support will be provided. There is potential for working with youth (ages 14-19) in this project, as well. Fingerprint cards will be required to work with youth.

Please email Nancy or Kate if you are interested in learning more about these exciting new opportunities!

Coming Soon...ABL GED class!
We are aiming to start a GED class in February of 2017. This will be a small class that will meet two evenings each week at our Literacy Connects site. Using our current model and goal of a 1:4 tutor to student ratio, we will be recruiting a team of tutors to facilitate.  Additional training will be required.

Please email Nancy or Cydne for more information.
