Dear Friends of A Novel Experience,

Our store is joining over 400 independent bookstores across the U.S. in the first-ever Independent Bookstore Day! It's this Saturday, May 2! If you are going to the Kentucky Derby or a host of other events, head towards Zebulon to be a part! We'll do kid stuff in the morning and early afternoon--the fair Elly is planning a fun scavenger hunt complete with owls and a secret message. We'll have hourly prize drawings through the day, in addition to great deals. And, we have some exclusive IBD merchandise that is sure to please...literary maps...posters...tea towels with quotes from your favorite authors. Never before seen! At 7:00 we will bring the party outside and do the shim sham down the sidewalks! We understand the Arts Council will have live music out on the Courthouse Square, too. We're reaching out to our local restaurants to offer IBD specials. And, come by in the evening and sample our punch while checking out our new photo exhibit!

May is one of those months that lends itself to opportunities to read, whether outside in the sun, or on the way to celebrating significant happenings--Mother's Day, graduations, weddings, vacations, and births. Do not get stuck in the car or away from home without a book at hand! Scanning the junk mail that has been collecting in the back seat is not the best use of precious reading time! Let us make a suggestion or two--our "Staff Favorites" section has been a great success. We continue to replenish the selections on a weekly basis with great used books.

Jewell is hosting her first Young Adult Reading Group on May 14th--come on by to discuss The Book Thief.  (She tells us she is sweetening the deal with pizza...) Brenda is looking towards June as well for the second annual "ATC" show (get busy, you artists of beautiful-things-small!). We've settled on May 17th to discuss Atul Gawande's "Being Mortal"--it's one of our every-so-often "one-off" book groups. It promises to be a worthy, life-affirming look at aging and "end of life" issues. And, as always, our book groups welcome new members--check out the list on our website, or if you are a fast reader, look at this month's selections below.

Stop by on May 2nd! We're looking forward to hearing from you about what you're reading these days!

"MAFIA" LURKS THROUGH MAY!

THE "Mafia" crowd is growing more and more sophisticated as they suss out the game each second and fourth Monday of every month--for those not yet initiated into the fun, it's a 21st century parlor game that requires only your wit and deductive reasoning skills. You enter into a town that has had a recent murder. It is up to the townspeople, cops, and doctors to catch the mafia before the mafia kill everyone off. If you enjoy intrigue, lying, murder-mystery, talking dead, and accusations, this is the game for you. And, if we're lucky, Johnny will be here to lead the game with his incredible characters!

You know, it's occurring to us that this topic is one that will apply to all of us, thus our intention to address it head on. It's timely that Dr. Gawande has written a lovely, acclaimed, challenging book on the subject. this is a subject that Here's a short review by Susan F. for our upcoming "one-time" book group on May 17--you don't have to read the whole book for the discussion, but take a dip and join us.

"This special book is on my "must read" recommendations list. It's written by a physician, but if you think it's a dry, clinical look at our mortality, you'd be wrong. Being Mortal is a very readable, humane exploration of how we approach aging and mortality in our culture. Dr. Gawande writes about how we have "medicalized" aging dying; he reveals, through stories and research, the very real and unnecessary suffering this approach often produces. He writes about his own learning process as a physician, including his mistakes. He shares his very personal experience of his beloved father's last illness. And, he shows us how we can do better. He learns from a hospice nurse, a geriatrician, and reformers seeking to make nursing homes more like real homes. He shows us how to really listen to what is truly important to people who are nearing the ends of their lives. And, if we can listen, we have hope that we can do better for those we love and for ourselves."
