Following the acquisition of  Hudson Whiskey in 2010, William Grant & Sons has bought producer  Tuthilltown Spirits - New York State's first distillery since Prohibition - for an undisclosed sum.

William Grant has acquired the 36-acre Tuthilltown facility based in Hudson Valley, which includes the distillery, gourmet restaurant, visitor centre and grounds with riverfront views.

The craft distillery was co-founded by Ralph Erenzo and Brian Lee, and its acquisition is described as a "logical addition" to William Grant's US operations. Read more.

Cheers: Legislature approves drinks by the glass at Iowa craft distilleries
by Brianne Pfannenstiel and William Petroski, The Des Moines Register

The distilling room at the Iowa Distilling Company.
A bill allowing Iowa's craft liquor distillers to mix cocktails at their manufacturing facilities gained final legislative approval Monday, with both Democrats and Republicans praising the bill as a good step for economic development.

The issue has been under discussion in the Legislature for years as distillers tried and failed to advance legislation they say puts them on a level playing field with Iowa's craft breweries and wineries, which already are able to open lounges and tasting rooms where patrons can buy a glass of beer or wine made on-site.

Craft distilling bill one committee away from [Florida] House, Senate floor
by Nick Evans, WFSU
(Public Media, PBS, and NPR for Northern Florida and Southern Georgia)

A Senate panel has approved a measure allowing craft distillers to sell more spirits directly. The idea is garnering support from unlikely sources.

While state lawmakers spar over major policy disagreements, a craft distilling measure is one of a handful of narrower issues trudging through the committee process. Normally an opponent of reducing restrictions on alcohol, Sen. Darryl Rouson (D-St. Petersburg) is adding his support the bill.

"I have generally opposed expansion of alcohol," he explains. "I have generally opposed erosion of the three tier system, but I understand that some of these distilleries are doing...

Faribault [MN] council approves first reading of amendment allowing micro distilleries downtown
by Gunnar Olson,  Faribault Daily News

Future home of 10_000 Drops distilling.

After clearing up questions of possible odor offenses, the Faribault City Council approved the first reading of an ordinance that would allow micro distilleries to operate downtown. The applicant, 10,000 Drops Craft Distillery, is the current tenant of the old Peterson Art Furniture building at 28 Fourth St. NE.

Jake Hvistendahl, Rob Kruchoski and Pat Jacobs are three friends who are taking on the project in downtown Faribault. They had to request that the city amend its zoning text to allow for micro distilleries as a permitted use in the city's Central Business District in order to achieve their goal.

Ontario [Canada] chambers fight for breaks
by  Bruce Bell, The County Weekly News [Canada]

Leaders from Prince Edward County, Belleville, Quinte West and Peterborough want support from fellow chambers of commerce across Ontario in asking the province for the same tax breaks and incentives currently given to wineries and craft breweries for distilleries.
Emily Cowan, executive director of the Prince Edward County Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, said craft distilling is a growth industry that has the potential to create jobs and boost economies.
She said the LCBO annual report showed in 2015-2016 Ontario craft distillers reported strong sales growth, up 63.7 per cent to $3.7 million, but recent legislation under Bill 70 presents more of a challenge to the fledgling industry instead of building it.

Medals in Michigan: awards for craft spirits
by Robert Allen, Detroit Free Press
Valentine Distilling Co. owner and CEO Rifino Valentine

From aquavit to vodka and smoked whiskey, Michigan-made spirits have commanded more attention than ever this year in national and international competitions.

Earlier this month, Michigan's distilleries received 28 awards at the American Distilling Institute's 11th annual spirits competition in Baltimore. The pool included more than 800 entrants from across the world. Gold medals went to Long Road Distillers' aquavit and to Grand Traverse Distillery's smoked whiskey, Islay Rye Whiskey.
"Last year, six Michigan distilleries received 16 medals, and this year we nearly doubled the hardware presented to our members. That's exciting news for Pure Michigan's growing craft spirits industry," Dianna Stampfler, executive director of the Michigan Craft Distillers Association, said in a  news release.   Read more.

Republic Restoratives is a small batch distillery and craft cocktail bar in Washington, DC co-founded by Pia Caruson and Rachel Gardner. This community-centric distillery is also the largest crowd-funded distillery in the world, and made headlines in March - Women's History Month - with the release of Rodham Rye: named in honour of Hillary Clinton. On the label it reads: "A tribute to the women who make us what we are today. From those who fought for the vote and to end prohibition, our sisters and mothers, and women everywhere who speak out, take risks and raise up the leaders of tomorrow. Here's to you."
