Vapor Distillery's co-owners Alistair Brogan and Ted Palmer charted a unique course
by Aron Johnson for CompanyWeek
Vapor Distillery

When Palmer started Vapor Distillery in 2007, it was called Roundhouse Spirits and focused on gin. "He's a gin guy," says Brogan. "He has made some phenomenal gins."

The world agrees. Vapor's spirits have won numerous awards, including "World's Best Cask Gin" at the 2015 World Gin Awards in London for its Ginskey Barrel Rested Gin.

Palmer and Brogan's passion for fine spirits is matched with a desire for experimentation. "Our Rhok gin is very low in juniper, as low as you can legally make it, and then we add organic botanicals which gives a really good blend and balance," says Brogan. "It's not your London dry gin with two parts juniper, one part coriander."

While Palmer's focus is gin, Brogan is a whiskey guy. He grew up in Scotland and spent 10 years in the Royal Air Force. After moving to Boulder with a desire to make single-malt whiskey, he met Palmer, and they joined forces and got to work on whiskey.

Pennsylvania House approves bill for
beer distributors to sell wine, liquor
by Kevin Zwick, Trib Live

Fully stocked shelves of liquor store in western PA
The PA state House last Tuesday sent the Senate another liquor proposal, continuing its push for further changes to the state's alcohol laws.

The bill would allow licensed beer distributors and importing distributors, known as wholesalers, to purchase a permit to sell unlimited quantities of wine and liquor. Beer distributor warehouses, which already sell beer in quantities ranging from single bottles to kegs, would essentially become one-stop shops for alcohol under the legislation.

The bill narrowly passed last Tuesday. Its fate in the Senate is unclear. Read more.

Oklahoma Bill allowing counties to vote on Sunday liquor store sales awaits Fallin's signature
The Oklahoma legislature
OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma Senate passed a bill allowing retail package liquor stores to sell alcohol on a county-option basis.
Senate Bill 211 passed last Monday with a 67-29 vote. The House voted to pass the legislation [the previous] week.

The bill has been sent to Gov. Mary Fallin's office to be signed. If she signs the bill, county commissioners will decide to put the measure up for a vote in their respective counties.

If citizens vote in favor of the bill, package liquor stores could sell alcohol between noon and midnight on Sunday, beginning in 2018. Retail package liquor stores had hoped Sunday sales would be part of an overhaul of Oklahoma's alcohol laws, which were approved by voters last year, but the language didn't make it into that proposal.

Wild Hart: A new craft distillery in Shelburne, VT
by Phyl Newbeck, Shelburne News
Naomi Clemmons and Craig Stevens of Wild Hart distillery.
Naomi Clemmons and Craig Stevens preparing for Wild Hart's June 1 opening.
Next month, Wild Hart Distillery will open its doors at the Vermont Artisan Village in Shelburne. The two principals, Naomi Clemmons and Craig Stevens, have been friends and colleagues for 25 years. They were working as consultants in the public health field in Boston, but both felt the urge to do something different. The result of that urge is their new, small-batch craft distillery making vodka and gin, something Stevens refers to as their "encore career."

It was in December of 2014 that Clemmons first thought about the idea of a distillery. "I was thinking about the assets in my life," she said, "and I thought about Tom Kenyon who farms on my parents' property. I love bourbon and here was a farmer who grew local grains."  Read more.

Distilling a green spirit

Onebar's Brodie Butler and Armando Formica.

A proposed addition to the Swan Valley's beer, wine and cider offerings will be as green as it is unusual.
Made from 52 shipping containers, it has been described as one of the most environmentally friendly craft distilleries in the world.
And unlike most other similar establishments, OneBar Distillery will make and sell beer, cider, spirits and wine.
Former photographer Brodie Butler and his business partner Armando Formica have received council approval to build the distillery on 20,000sqm near the corner of Gnangara and West Swan roads.
Assuming they are able to obtain a liquor licence, they hope to have the distillery operating by early next year.

Pairs of Pears is a treat wrestled from the grip of bureaucracy by two relentless local distillers
by Jennie Orton, BeatRoute

Pairs of Pears bottle
VANCOUVER - Some of the most storied pieces of art ride a long and complicated road before they come to be, often changing hands and crossing borders and coming in and out of contact with danger along their journey to their appreciation by the masses. The mark of a wise man is to know such a piece of art when he sees one-or tastes one, as the case may be. Deep Cove Craft's Shae de Jaray is one such wise man and, together with Long Table Distillery's co-founder/master distiller Charles Tremewen, he rescued a very well-travelled and sublimely well-crafted pinot-barreled pear brandy from what would've been a tragic early grave down a drain in North Vancouver.

Before opening Deep Cove Craft in 2012, de Jaray was involved in a cider project in Oregon using pears as the base. When he decided to move operations to North Vancouver, he brought with...

South Carolina start-up crafts a complement to beverage biz

Black Water Barrels
The power of observation has led to countless new business ventures, but those that become a success often are linked more to quality customer service and adhering to a customer's needs, perhaps even more so than the idea or product itself. Greg Pierce, who once cut his teeth on what went into barrels, is now more concerned with locating high quality quarter-sawn American White Oak to craft the barrels themselves. Pierce and a group of investors opened Black Water Barrels in the summer of 2016, and began production of 30-, 53- and 60-gallon barrels for bourbon, rum, tequila, beer, ale, cider, wine, Cognac and hot sauce early in 2017. Had the business been founded in Kentucky, Missouri or Minnesota, few would have batted an eye, but Bamberg, S.C., a town of nearly 4,000 folks, is most notable as being the birthplace of Nikki Haley, former governor of South Carolina and current U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, former N.Y. Mets outfielder Mookie Wilson, and its prosperous cotton mill that was built in 1892...  Read more.
