Global whiskey industry leaders unite to denounce tariffs
By Bruce Schreiner, Associated Press
W9 Spirit of Collaboration logo
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Top global whiskey associations put aside their marketplace competition [last] Thursday to show a united front in denouncing tariffs and urging world leaders to end their disputes before trade wars start siphoning global sales of distilled spirits.

After two days of talks, representatives of nine global distilled spirits organizations meeting in Kentucky signed a resolution urging the "prompt removal" of recent tariffs. American whiskey makers have become caught in the middle of disputes, with tariffs slapped on their products and other goods in trade conflicts pitting the U.S. against key allies.

MGP Reduces Minimum Order for Custom Mash Bills
New 250 barrel-minimum supports customers' product development
MGP Lawrenceburg Barrel Rack House
ATCHISON, KAN., July 25, 2018 - Craft distillers who want to explore or launch new brands now have additional support from MGP. The company has reduced its minimum order for proprietary mash bills to 250 barrels from the previous 1,000-barrel requirement, said MGP Vice President of Alcohol Sales and Marketing David Dykstra.
In addition to lowering the minimum order, MGP will allow customers to "pool" orders with other distillers to fulfill the 250-barrel requirement. "Offering this additional flexibility to customers is yet another way that MGP helps develop exceptional brands, whether our experts are creating a new mash bill or providing an existing mash bill ready for a...  Read more.

Mother and daughter duo display the beauty of entrepreneurship, family, farming, and bourbon
Industry Interview by Ted Hissey, Thoroughbred Spirits Consultants
JOYCE AND AUTUMN NETHERY OF JEPTHA CREED DISTILLERY
Joyce and Autumn Nethery of Jeptha Creed Distillery
Ted: Joyce, thanks for taking the time for this interview. My first question is how did this all happen? When did your family decide to open a distillery and what was the original inspiration that drove it?

Joyce: Well, the idea really originated with my husband. He wanted to build a distillery. And at the time he started talking about this, I thought he was crazy. Well, as a little bit of background, my background is in chemical engineering and I have a master's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Louisville.

My husband grew up as a dairy farmer and we had a dairy for a while. We actually still live on the farm. We still have the tractors...

DOYLESTOWN, Pa., As craft whiskey producers look for ways to improve their products, many are looking to the past, bringing back varieties of grain that have been largely lost from the country's fields. Everything you wanted to know about
grass seed harvest
By Seth Klann, Mecca Grade Estate Malt
Bluegrass seed at Mecca Grade Estate Malting
Contrary to popular belief, barley, wheat and rye are not the main crops grown on our farm. Kentucky Bluegrass is the main seed crop grown, and the grains are used as rotational crops. This year alone, we had around 750 acres of Kentucky Bluegrass to be harvested. KBG generally stays in the ground for 4-5 years and then is taken out and replaced with a grain crop. Crop rotations are used to help prevent disease and weed resistance as well as to help restore and provide certain nutrients back into the soil.
In our previous post, we explained the process of swathing, now you will learn about combining, where the seed goes after it leaves the fields and baling.

Hard Truth Distilling Goes from Micro to
Largest Craft Distillery in Indiana
By Distillery Trail
Column Still delivery at Hard Truth Distilling
Visiting a distillery never disappoints, each one is different and every one of them has their own unique personality. The large heritage distilleries, the ones that survived or started soon after Prohibition have mainly focused on one thing for the last 100 years and that's making distilled spirits, volumes of it. That's fine and they make some great spirits.

On the other hand, today's craft spirits distilleries and startups tend to be a bit more creative, some of that creativity is innate while some of that creativity is thrust upon them in order to survive as a young business. Depending on state and local laws, craft distillery owners are often a "Jack of all Trades" from getting hands-on by driving a Bobcat to selecting their first spirits lineup to an overall business model. In the case of Hard Truth Distilling in Nashville, Indiana, their business model is like a three legged stool that's focused on three things; running a distillery, a brewery and restaurants (six of them and counting.)
