Ohio liquor law change helps
micro distilleries expand reach
by Tyrel Linkhorn, Toledo Blade

Toledo Spirits bottles
It soon might become easier for Ohio's micro distilleries to get their vodkas, gins and whiskeys on barroom shelves thanks to a change in state rules that will allow small-time distillers to sell products directly to pubs and restaurants.

That may not sound groundbreaking, but the process to get booze in the hands of a bartender is so ponderous that many producers didn't even bother trying.

Under the Ohio's strict liquor control rules, all distillers - no matter if they make 100 bottles a year or 100 bottles a minute - first had to ship their products to one of two state warehouses. The warehouse would send the bottles to a state liquor agency, where restaurateurs then could buy it wholesale.  Read more.

Ireland's cabinet approves legislation to
allow distilleries and breweries sell on site

Beer poured from a tap. Legislation also includes distilleries.

The [Irish] Cabinet has given the green light to legislation that will allow craft breweries and distilleries to sell their products on site.

The legislation, first proposed by Labour TDs Alan Kelly, will now have to work its way through the Oireachtas. It would allow microbreweries sell their drinks on site between 10am and 6pm.

However visitors will have to complete a guided tour of the brewery or distillery before they can buy alcohol there.

New alcohol study finds moderate drinking linked to cognitive health in old age
by Christina Johnson, UC San Diego News Center

Someone holding wine glass at picnic table
29-year study of homogenous population in San Diego, Calif., shows moderate drinking did not impair cognitive health in older adults.

Older adults who consume alcohol moderately on a regular basis are more likely to live to the age of 85 without dementia or other cognitive impairments than non-drinkers, according to a University of California San Diego School of Medicine-led study.

The findings are published in the August issue of the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease.

Six important things to know about Anchor's sale to Sapporo  by Caleb Pershan, San Francisco Eater magazine

News [last week] that San Francisco's craft brewing stalwart Anchor would sell to Sapporo has made the rounds by now. That means it's time to process it: Here are six key facts to know about what changes - or doesn't - with Anchor owned by Sapporo.

...Anchor Distilling isn't included in the sale and will spin off on its own. The deal will give Sapporo total ownership of "all of the equity interest of Anchor Brewing Company," but that doesn't include Anchor Distilling Company, an offshoot of Anchor that produces premium gin, vodka, and more spirits and has a tasting room above the Potrero brewery. Anchor Distilling "will now become a fully independent company in its own right."

Class up your next cocktail with a craft mixer

A Ginger Bee cocktail created with Cocktail Crate craft mixers

Beverage science expert Mary Pellittieri first made her name in the beer world, helping to launch some of Goose Island Beer Co.'s most iconic brands, working in quality control at MillerCoors and authoring the book Quality Management: Essential Planning for Brewers. But today the chemist and botanist is generating headlines on a different end of the alcoholic beverage industry: craft tonics. What's a craft tonic, you ask? It's an artisanal tonic water designed to combine with spirits, and it's forming part of the fledgling yet booming high-quality cocktail mixer industry .

"There's a certain elegance to slowly preparing, sharing and savoring an herbal drink that's purposely built with refreshing flavors and not overpowered by sweet," Pellittieri said in a statement when she and a partner announced the formation of their company, Milwaukee-based Top Note Tonics.

Philadelphia distillers, tired of being among the city's best-kept secrets, this spring banded together and formed the Philadelphia Distillery Trail for craft-spirits enthusiasts.

Traci Browne, co-owner of Rowhouse Spirits, led the effort. Inspired by similar trails around the country, she designed a website (phillydistillerytrail.com) to allow easy exploration of the region's craft-spirits scene.

Most distilleries already were operating tours as a way to connect with customers, but collaborating on a website gave the distilleries more visibility.
