Seven years ago, a group of women in the craft distilling industry banded together, with leadership from Samantha Unger Katz of  New York Distilling Company , to form
Ladies of American Distilleries (LOAD).

LOAD created a structure and forum to support gender diversity in craft distilling. Women still only comprise 10-20% of distillers and distillery employees and less than 10% of majority owners in US distilleries.   Read more.

Regionalization: American craft whiskey's next great frontier  by Jake Emen, The Whiskey Wash
This rye whiskey from Coppersea is one of the new regional Empire Rye offerings.
This rye whiskey from Coppersea is one of the new regional Empire Rye offerings.
Regional trends have started to emerge as the number of craft whiskey distilleries in the country continues to swell. Certain areas have broken through as more prominent distilling hubs due to a number of factors including favorable legislation, while other areas are starting to become known for particular styles of whiskey. And the debut of the Empire Rye designation in the state of New York is an example of both. Looking ahead then, what's next for American whiskey categorization, and which types of regions and styles might we see more definitively hashed out in the future?  Read story

Breweries and distilleries work in harmony with struggling Arts Organizations  by Tara Nurin, contributor to Forbes
Five _ 20 Spirits and Brewing brewed a Kolsch beer for the first of a four-year partnership to help the Erie Philharmonic_s Beethoven 4_4 program.
Five & 20 Spirits and Brewing brewed a Kolsch beer for the first of a four-year partnership to help the Erie Philharmonic's Beethoven 4/4 program.

Though they traditionally appeal to different crowds, craft beer and the classical arts share a similar problem as they both struggle to grow and retain their followings. Craft breweries need to expand their demographics beyond their typically (white) Millennial and Gen X drinkers to reverse their slowing sales trends while arts organizations must replace their aging (white) audiences if they hope to outlive their current subscribers, board members and donors.

Across the country, a few forward-looking institutions and breweries (plus a craft distillery or two) are discovering that by entering each other's spaces they can intermingle their adherents. In some cities, like Wichita, that means sending a classical pianist into a distillery to play compositions of Radiohead. In Maine, the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra's Bourbon and Bach program showcases musicians playing pieces with bourbon bottles or interacting with the space at the Litchfield Distillery.

Alex Castle, Head Distiller at Old Dominick Distillery: FACES of Memphis
by Andria K. Brown, Style Blueprint
Alex Castle_ Head Distiller at Old Dominick Distillery

When she visited Memphis for the first time, Alex Castle didn't really expect that she would make the city her home a few months later. And yet just a summer after interviewing to lead the efforts at the (brand-new-but-historically-based) Old Dominick Distillery, Alex and her husband were moving to Midtown. Now in place as Head Distiller, Alex has concocted spirits that won't see the light of day for another year or two, along with others that are as ready to greet Memphis as she was. For this chemical engineer, it's all about finding the perfect mix.  Read more.

Move over craft beer, craft gin is moving in
by Steve Kretzmann, fin24 [South Africa]
craft beer_gin and juniper berries

The rapid development of the craft gin industry, which in three years has expanded from a handful of brands to 135 gins produced by 65 companies, can be credited to hard-fought battles against repressive liquor legislation.

This follows in the footsteps of the local craft beer sector. Gin is liquor which derives its predominant flavour mainly from juniper berries, but there are hundreds of other supplementary flavours, including local inputs fynbos and rooibos.

...The concentration of craft gins in the Western Cape is something Jorgenson attributed to Cape Town's "hipster movement", with people "getting arty and experimental", the plethora of fynbos that can be used to create different flavours to add to the required juniper, as well as a tradition of distilling emanating from centuries of winemaking.

New distillery doubles as Salem witch trial museum

sign hanging in Gallows Hill Spirits in Allentown_ PA
Gallows Hill Spirits held its grand opening on Friday, March 2 in Allentown, PA. The distillery is themed around the Salem witch trials, during which one of owner Bob Piano's ancestors was executed.
At the new Allentown [Pennsylvania] distillery Gallows Hill Spirits, the Salem witch trials aren't just a quirky theme. They're part of owner Bob Piano's family history.

Using Ancestry.com, Piano traced his lineage back 10 generations to his "8-times great-grandfather" Samuel Wardwell, who was executed during the trials in 1692.

New $2.8M craft brewery, distillery is coming to downtown Collinsville [Illinois]
by Cara Anthony, Belleville News-Democrat
Whitney Reiser and Derik Reiser are starting work on the future Old Herald Brewing Co. microbrewery and Ardent Spirits_ Inc. craft distillery in Collinsville_ IL
Whitney Reiser and Derik Reiser are starting work on the future Old Herald Brewing Co. microbrewery and Ardent Spirits, Inc. craft distillery in Collinsville. The brewery and distillery will be inside the former Collinsville Herald building on Clay Street.

The brewing and bottling spirit of Collinsville could be on the verge of a renaissance, thanks to Derik Reiser and his wife, Whitney.

On a cold and cloudy Wednesday morning, the metro-east couple beamed with pride as they spoke about plans to open a microbrewery and craft distillery in downtown Collinsville.

Located at 115 E. Clay St., the former home of the Collinsville Herald newspaper will receive a $2.8 million makeover this spring. Reiser said $650,000 will come from tax increment financing.

Bill Owens exhibition makes  Hyperallergic's
top 45 shows for the Spring list
Bill Owens photo - just a job
Hyperallergic's Concise Guide to NY Art Spring 2018 includes an exhibit of work by Bill Owens and Studs Terkel (see entry #6 on the list). This is significant, according to the
Zimmerli Art Museum (at Rutgers University) because "there is a lot of competition in the New York area for a spot on this list."
As Americans navigate rapidly changing workplaces, this exhibit at the Zimmerli Art Museum reflects on what a job meant in the 1970s with photographs and interviews. It's Just a Job: Bill Owens and Studs Terkel on Working in 1970s America, now showing at the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers, recalls an era where most Americans shared an expectation that a job should be reliable and provide a salary that supports the cost of living. The exhibition pairs the two iconic documentarians of work life, underscoring how the decade was a dramatic time of transition for the American workforce. Read more.
