Crab Island Rum distillery in Puerto Rico before and after Hurricane Maria.

Ivan Torres of Crab Island Rum was about to do his first legal distillation when hurricane Maria hit. He had been working on his craft distillery since 2013. Before that, he was a moonshiner. He believes that the craft spirits industry is an excellent opportunity for the small island community of Vieques, Puerto Rico and does not want to give up on the distillery, despite the devastating blow from hurricane Maria.  Read more/including list of items needed.

Four decades ago, a young judge named Jörg Rupf from Germany's Black Forest ventured to northern California. He had worked in the German administrative courts for several years by then, but in 1976 opted to take a leave to study at U.C. Berkeley. His subject was the relationship between government and the arts. But he learned something else: American beer and wine sucked.

If Rupf had come from a long line of cuckoo clock makers, the end of this story might have been very different. But he didn't. His mother's family were brewers, and he grew up drinking good beer and simple but satisfying table wine. He also drank delicious eau de vie-a distilled spirit commonly available in southwest Germany made from mashed and fermented fruit, including apples, pears and berries. It was rare in America, and Rupf wondered why no one was producing it here, especially since California offered a boundless cornucopia of amazing fruits.

Spirited celebration marks the opening of Roslyn, Washington business  by Mary Swift, for the Daily Record
Members of prominent Roslyn families stand in front of stills that honor their family names at Heritage Distilling in Roslyn during a grand opening celebration this month.
Members of prominent Roslyn families stand in front of stills that honor their family names at Heritage Distilling in Roslyn during a grand opening celebration earlier this month.

ROSLYN, Washington - Four years ago, Cheri Marusa picked up the phone and called a man she'd never met. "I don't know you and you don't me," she said by way of introduction. "But we need to meet."

Marusa, president of the Roslyn Downtown Association (RDA), was searching for an anchor tenant for the historic NWI (Northwestern Improvement Co.) building in Roslyn which the RDA put a down payment on in 2011 and finished paying off in 2012. Built in the 1880s, the building was the company store when mining ruled Roslyn and surrounding communities.

The man she called was Justin Stiefel, CEO and co-founder of Heritage Distilling Co., then a recently-launched craft distillery based in Gig Harbor. Heritage Distilling has a growing reputation in the craft distilling industry and an established focus on honoring cultural heritage.

Marusa was convinced that if Heritage came to Roslyn the fit would suit both of them. She was right.

Exceptional spirits surface at Rappahannock Cellars
by John McCaslin, RappNews
_So much flavor comes from the grape__ notes Allan Delmare_ whose custom-made stills resemble large woodwind musical instruments.
" So much flavor comes from the grape," notes Allan  Delmare , whose custom-made stills resemble large woodwind musical instruments.

Not all grapes grown at Rappahannock Cellars wind up in bottles of wine. Now, along with its award-winning chardonnay, meritage and cabernet franc, the renowned winery in Huntly is pouring a brandy mojito with spearmint, pressed vodka tonic with lime, brandy tonic with orange, and a Rappahannock mule with vodka and ginger.

"There are so many wineries and breweries cropping up these days, and there's only so many places you can go in one weekend, and we want to be on that list," explains Allan Delmare of the winery's added attraction, Dida's Distillery (pronounced did-uhs, which means "grandfather" in Croatian), a tribute to the Delmare family's grandfather who established a legacy of fruit farming stretching from California to Virginia.

Tasmanian distiller produces spit bucket spirit
by Lauren Eads, The Drinks Business

A Tasmanian distiller so committed to the cause of sustainability and reducing waste has produced a spirit from 500 litres of wine swilled and spat out by guests at a two-day tasting.

Not wanting to see the vast quantity of discarded wine go to waste following the Rootstock sustainable wine festival in Sydney last year, Tasmanian distiller Peter Bignell, of Belgrove Distillery, hatched a plan to reuse liquid from the event's many spittoons to create a new spirit.

"I hate waste, absolutely hate waste," he told ABC Radio Hobart. "That bucket in the middle of the room with all the dregs of the wine and everyone's spit in it, that's a waste, that's going to get tipped down the drain. "I said 'If I took that [spit bucket] home and distilled it and brought it back next year, who would drink it?' and I think everybody's hands went up."

The Block Distilling Co. mixes equal measures science and art   by Veronica Penney, Westword
The Block Distilling is located inside the Block building in Denver_s RiNo district.

Michelle Flake and brothers Kraig and Kameron Weaver seized the opportunity to launch their distillery when the Block building became available just over two years ago. Inspiration for the distillery was a product of the booming craft-beer scene in Denver, but the founders' preference for cocktails and craft spirits led them down the route of distilling rather than brewing.  Read more.

Science and spirits: New distillery in Wisconsin aims for precision and quality
by Allison Geyer, Isthmus
Old friends from UW-Madison and their spouses opened Two Tall in September.

Nick Hanson and Dave Farnia met at age 19 when they were assigned lab partners in a UW-Madison engineering class. Nearly 20 years later, they're still friends - and working together again in a different kind of lab.

In September, the pair opened Two Tall Distilling at 5353 Maly Road in Sun Prairie, [Wisconsin]. Their spouses, Amy Hanson and Stephanie Farnia, are co-owners in the venture. It's a small facility at the end of a country road - 1,800 square feet with a tasting room and three stills producing gin, vodka, whiskey and specialty liqueur. "We thought maybe we had to apologize a bit about that," Stephanie Farnia says of the facility's modest size. "But we're finding that the small scale is letting us experiment."
