For the lazy days of summer, you’ll see that Humboldt County has a lot going on. If you have a seasonal business that does not include summer as one of the busy times, please take advantage of the many educational opportunities offered jointly by AEDC and the North Coast SBDC, by SBDC independently and Jedi Women’s Center as well. And if you’re busy this season - specifically because you’re in the tourism industry, please consider taking the SBDC’s tourism industry survey to help them learn more about what you do and what you need. Also take a look at the new tourism flight being offered by SBDC, as it might be just the thing you need to launch or grow your business.
This month you’ll also see many exciting things going on in Eureka related to art and, I think we have a theme here, tourism, in the form of a new visitor’s Center.
Lazy days of summer? No, not here.

AEDC Client Profile
Horvath Plumbing
When the owner of Cruz Plumbing decided to retire, employee Devin Horvath thought about buying the business. Then thought again. “Buying the business, including the building, would have come with a lot of overhead,” Horvath explained. “I realized I could buy his client list, equipment, and one of his box trucks instead.” And with a loan from AEDC, that is exactly what he did.
Horvath plans to offer the same great customer service and prices clients came to expect with Cruz Plumbing, while also working to grow his client list. “I am not a big outfit but that means I can offer personal service” he said. “With bigger outfits you don’t know who will show up or how qualified they will be. If you call me you may have to wait a day or two, but you will get what you pay for.”
Initially Horvath plans to focus mainly on individual client projects, leaving construction remodeling and heating jobs to other plumbers. He is also working to get the license that will allow him to install sprinkler systems, which are now required in new construction in California. Eventually Horwath plans to design those systems as well. “I am taking incremental steps to grow my business,” he said. “It feels like I have been around awhile and this is the right next step for me.”

City of Eureka Designated Arts District!
“The State designation of Eureka's Cultural District is good for Eureka in multiple ways,” Community Development Director Rob Holmlund observed. “The designation validates what we have known for years: Eureka is a mecca for the Arts and artists and now this is recognized at the State level. Second, this is great for our tourism economy. The State is investing time and resources into marketing 14 specific districts as representatives of the best of what California has to offer. We can leverage those State resources to enhance our marketing and promotion of the City. Third, this provides further momentum towards Eureka's "Renaissance."
Holmlund believes the State designation will make the recently adopted Strategic Arts and the Opera Alley Visioning Plans easier to implement, especially with the support of an annual $5,000 stipend. “Eureka beat out many impressive competitors in our bid to become a State-designated Cultural District. We now have the honor and responsibility to live up to that designation,” he said.

This curated collection seeks to bring Eureka’s streetscapes to life with an outstanding showcase of public art on otherwise invisible canvas. Eureka Box Art! is one of several projects outlined in the Eureka Strategic Arts Plan that are coming to life this summer. “
