AFP Greater Madison December 2011 eNews
President's Report
It's the end of my two year term as president of AFP Greater Madison, and I'd like to acknowledge again what a valuable experience my membership and leadership in AFP has been for my professional fundraising career.

Prior to joining AFP I didn't really define myself as a fundraiser, even though I had been working professionally as one for a few years.  Membership in AFP has offered me opportunities for education and professional development and a sense of professionalism I had not had before.  I also have developed relationships with a group of peers who will be my friends and mentors for life.

In a world of economic uncertainty, nonprofits need skilled, ethical fundraisers more than ever before.  Membership in AFP is an essential prerequisite for those who take their fundraising careers seriously and hope to have the greatest impact in their community.

It has been an honor to serve you in this role and I look forward to my continued role on the board as Immediate Past President and in the the service I can continue to provide to my friends in the field.  Our chapter is in excellent hands with Jenni Collins as President and Dan Plummer as President Elect in the coming year.  This also marks the end of our Immediate Past President Judy Keel's final year on our board after 12 years.  We would not be the chapter we are without Judy and our other past leaders.

Please join us at our Annual Meeting at noon on Dec. 20 at Nakoma Country Club to help us celebrate the holiday season and usher in a new board of directors.

Our chapter's National Philanthropy Day celebration was attended by over 425 people on Friday, November 11 at the Overture Center for the Arts.  We honored this year's award winners, and paid tribute to past honorees.  It was great seeing so many of you there!

Many thanks go to the Philanthropy Day Committee for their hard work and dedication making this year's event a wonderful day to remember.  Next time you see these folks, be sure to give them a big thanks!

News! Slashing the Charitable Deduction is Now ON the Table
AFP strongly encourages U.S. chapters to encourage their members to take action and urge Congress to oppose any tax reforms that would harm charitable giving!

The Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction is drafting tax code changes behind closed doors.
It has just been reported that Republicans are open to eliminating certain tax deductions for the wealthy in exchange for a permanent reduction of the marginal tax rates set under President George W. Bush. At the same time, various groups, including the Obama Administration, have suggested proposals to alter itemized deductions such as a 28 percent cap on deductions for higher-income individuals or a floor that would allow a tax break only for charitable contributions that exceed 2 percent of adjusted gross income. AFP opposes any proposed change to the itemized deduction (such as a cap or a floor) that would reduce charitable giving. We have a great new advocacy service that will help make our voices heard on Capitol Hill. Engaging Networks has generously allowed AFP to use its online platform where you can contact your members of Congress with the mere touch of a button. Please encourage members to spend 10 - 15 minutes using Engaging Networks. They can click here to send an electronic letter to their state's representatives and senators.

Program Committee Highlight

Each year the program committee works to bring a variety of educational programs to all of our AFP Members. From special events to corporate partnerships to ethics, our goal is to keep educational opportunities at the forefront of your AFP experience. We also want to make sure that these programs are high quality and relevant to the needs of the philanthropic community. Our goal is to develop programs that you want to attend. Each month you receive an email that invites you to attend our program luncheons held at Nakoma Country Club. And multiple times a year you receive a message that shares an opportunity to join us for a brown bag webinar held at Agrace HospisCare.

This past year we were proud to bring you high quality programs such as:
