Arizona State University's ATIC center was awarded a $140,000 contract from IBIS in Sierra Leone as part of the Promoting Renewable Energy Services for Social Development (PRESSD) program, funded by the 10th European Development Fund. Under the agreement, ATIC's VOCTEC program will conduct technical trainings on solar electric technologies for educational and government organizations in Sierra Leone and provide recommendations on renewable energy curricula for vocational, certificate and diploma levels. In addition, ASU will be collaborating with the relevant stakeholders to create a renewable energy outreach program for secondary schools, linking renewable energy with climate change and the environment. 
 
PPG Global LLC, with headquarters in Houston, TX, has awarded ASU's ATIC center a contract for $65,000 to conduct a feasibility study in Cote d'Ivoire, as part of the Vocational Center for Energy, Electricity, Solar & Lighting Installation and Service Technicians program, funded by the Government of Cote d'Ivoire. The feasibility study will be conducted off- and on-site in close collaboration with all stakeholders to review, evaluate and define necessary workforce skills and competency levels in order to develop an appropriate training curricula for the next generation of students to design, install and maintain solar PV energy systems.

Students  Study Sustainable Energy in Aruba

 
ATIC launched it's second annual Study Abroad program to Aruba, titled 'Sustainable Energy Solutions for Islands'. With assistance from partner, TNO, the program uses Aruba as a case study and examines sustainability concepts in an island setting. 
The small and relatively isolated nature of islands makes them ideal for studying sustainability topics where tourism, transportation, and the ecosystem contribute to the island's economy.

ASU Organizes Gender Contest in the Caribbean
IDB contest winner

 
The BRIDGE program in the Caribbean held a "Gender Inclusion Contest" for student teams in all three program countries - Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. In the Caribbean, like much of the world, female students and professionals are significantly underrepresented in many Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) related fields of study. However, there is solid evidence that the active encouragement and inclusion of women into the STEM field can provide significant benefits on a social-economic level.   read more

I n April 2015, Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal was a victim to a tragic earthquake that destroyed buildings,  injured more than 23,000 people and killed over 9,000. As part of the three-year, Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) funded, BRIDGE program in the Caribbean, ASU conducted a solar photovoltaic (PV) workshop specifically targeted towards code and building inspectors from government agencies, utilities and other private and public organizations and educational institutions in Barbados.
