Pat Summit - Sad Loss of an Amazing Leader

Pat Summit 2012 Global Leadership Award Recipient
ATHENA Global Leadership Award recipient Pat Summitt with Martha Mertz in 2012 .

The 2012 Global ATHENA Leadership Award was presented to Pat Summitt in Knoxville at the Pratt Pavilion on the University of Tennessee Campus. The Pratt Pavilion is the practice facility for the Lady Vols. Although Pat had resigned earlier in the year as head Lady Vol basketball coach, she held the title of head coach emeritus. She was attending the Lady Vol practice session when she was asked to come to a private reception upstairs from the practice court. Head coach Holly Warlick joined her as well as some of her closest friends to honor her with the ATHENA Award. Martha Mertz, ATHENA Founder, presented the Award to Pat. Pat expressed her sincere gratitude and noted that the Award sculpture was beautiful!

Summit is the all-time winningest coach in NCAA history (men or women) with 1,098 career wins. In her 38 seasons at Tennessee, she won 32 combined SEC regular-season and tournament titles and led her teams to eight NCAA Championships. With her program maintaining a 100 percent graduation rate, Summitt was an educator, role model and mentor to her student-athletes, and she has commented many times that she coached for "the love of the game." She inspired her pupils to achieve on and off the court. Summitt not only played on a U.S. Olympic Team (1976), she coached the 1977 U.S. Junior National Team to two Gold medals, led the 1983 U.S, World Championship Team to a silver medal and directed the 1984 Olympic Team to a gold medal. She was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, Women's Sports Foundation Hall of Fame, and received the Naismith Coach of the Century Award in 2000. She was inducted into the Tennessee Women's Hall of Fame, and she has been honored with numerous awards, including the 2012 Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Obama.

In August 2011 Pat announced her diagnosis of early-onset dementia, Alzheimer's type. For five years she shared her struggle with the world, raising awareness and resources to combat Alzheimer's disease. Although she lost the battle with the disease on June 28, her fierce spirit will live on through all who knew her and were inspired by her. Her legend continues with the UT Lady Vol program that became known worldwide for its standard of excellence. A larger than life statue of Pat stands on the Pat Summitt Plaza across from the Pratt Center.

One of Pat's quotes that has been circulated by the media demonstrated Pat's faith and strength while facing her disease, "God doesn't take things away to be cruel. He takes things away to make room for other things. He takes things away to lighten us. He takes things away so we can fly?" Pat Summitt is now free to fly!
