March 2017
Addison Building Bright Futures

Greetings,
blue_star.jpg

I hope this newsletter finds you savoring the transition to spring!  While a short, almost mythical time of year,  the few days of the year where the sun is
war m, and the snow is soft, are simply some of the best Vermont has to offer!  Whether skiing, sugaring, or lounging is your thing right now-  make the most of it and recharge!

My sincere admiration to you all for being on the front lines of caring for the families of Addison County.  You are making a big difference everyday, and impacting the future of our state. We are better together, and I thank you for being a part of our collective early care and education system.

Welcome to Jason Sherry, the new face behind MiniBury.com.  We will miss Eliza Eaton, Founder,  but believe that Jason will gracefully continue the legacy of this valuable resource!

Collaboration comes easily when families are at the
of our work.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES)
Building Resilience
The IFS/BBF council met in March to learn more about ACES and AFES (Adverse Family Experiences) .  Charlie Biss, Dept. of Mental Health, provided up-to-date information about the prevalence of AFES in Vermont.  This body of current research links early trauma and maltreatment to health issues and well-being later in life.  The council spent time brainstorming how to mitigate the effects of early trauma, and identified raising awareness as a key first step to building a resilient community.

Middlebury College student volunteer organizations, DREAM and Community Friends, and MiniBury.com , are partnering with IFS/BBF to bring the documentary, Resilience, The Biology of Stress and Science of Hope, to our community.  The first screening will be held in early May, and is open to the community.   Learn more about this award-winning film  here.  Event details will be available in early April.

Supporting Breastfeeding Working Moms
The Vermont Department of Health-Middlebury has long been working on spreading the word about the benefits of breastfeeding- to mothers, children and employers.
As part of their mission, VDH-MIddebury is visiting businesses and offering information about becoming a breastfeeding-friendly employer, how to support nursing moms, and sharing grant opportunities for creating a lactation space in the office! Contact Gillian to learn more: 388-5746.

Raising Awareness about WIC
WIC is a successful public health nutrition program that provides food and nutrition education for income-eligible pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women, infants, and children up to five years old.

The number of families participating in WIC has decreased in Vermont
and across the country.  Often, families don't realize they are eligible, as eligibility is more moderate than other assistance programs.
Help spread the word and support food security and health for children in our region.  This includes:
  • pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women
  • children birth to age 5
  • children living with caregivers and foster parents are eligible, even if the caregiver income exceeds eligibility limits
