Sermon
"A Look into the Lives of Our Youth"

Scripture
1 Corinthians 12:12-26  ~   1 Corinthians 13 ~  Ephesians 4:29, 32

This Sunday our youth will lead us in worship.  They will be sharing with us about their lives, the things that occupy their time, minds and hearts.  Our youth are a part of our church and have an important message for each of us to hear whether we are kids who look up to them, parents who are trying to figure them out, adults who are mentors, or ones who feel disconnected.   As we continue through the week, think about the youth of Aldersgate.  Do you know them?  How well do you know them?  Pray for these young people and join us for a worship experience that is filled with their spirit and love.  In preparation, please read 1 Corinthians 12.  Please note there will not be Kids' Club this Sunday as we believe the message being shared will appeal to all kids.  Nursery care, the Family Room for restless children, and activity clipboards will be available.  Sunday School will still take place between services.
Pastor's Blog
Pastor Brad P. Beeman

There are a couple of events I'd like to promote as we continue to move forward as a church. Two are Seattle District events and the other events are for us and our surrounding community.

This Saturday, January 21st from 8:30-noon there will be an Aldersgate Church Work Party.  It will be an opportunity to work on some of the deferred items of maintenance, all of them inside the building.  There are a variety of opportunities to clean things up, to update things, and to make sure our facility is in great shape.  Don't miss this.  Dave Carver is supervising the event and will have plenty of places for people to work and do some winter sprucing up.

This Sunday, January 22nd at 3:00pm, the District is holding a film related forum around the film, "Blanket of Fear."  It is co-starring our District Lay Leader and focuses on religious intolerance.  There will be a discussion following the film.  The film will be shown at Blaine Memorial United Methodist Church in the Columbia City neighborhood just south of I-90 in Seattle.  It will be an opportunity to hear and share our own leadings as Christians in a world that seems to be growing more intolerant by the day.  If at all possible, please plan on attending.

On the following Saturday, January 28th, from 8am - 4pm there will be the annual District Training Day.  The workshops are outstanding, particularly this year, and focus on a variety of areas that concern every church.  It's a time to get to know others from the District, hear from some remarkable teachers, and to share wonderful worship together.  It will be held at Renton First United Methodist, just on the hill east of I-405.  Again, it will be a wonderful opportunity to learn and grow in faith and in relationships.

On Tuesday March 21st, down the road at our neighboring church (St. Margaret's Episcopal) there will be movie co-sponsored by Aldersgate.  It will revisit the movie, "Bowling for Columbine" and have opportunities to discuss gun control and gun violence in America.  I want to invite you to be a part of that conversation, especially given our sponsorship of the movie, and the fact that the showing is taking place in the House of Worship of a neighbor makes it that much more an opportunity for us.  More details will be coming out shortly but I wanted to get it on our calendars sooner rather than later.

We are a part of a connectional church; one that seeks to support, encourage, uplift and move ahead the gospel of Jesus Christ within our United Methodist District.  We are a connectional church right here at Aldersgate, a church that seeks to support the ministries including taking care of this beautiful property and this often used facility.   We are a connectional church that seeks to build connections in and around this community.  Each of these events are most certainly a part of being a connectional church.  Let's take these on.

Budget Approved
Thank you to our staff, lay leaders and Finance Team for creating the January 1-June 30, 2017 budget.  Their leadership and guidance in our faith community is greatly appreciated.  Click here for a copy of the budget or contact the church office.  Note that this new budget is for the first half of the year only as we transition to a new fiscal year that runs from July to June (ie. July 2017-June 2018). We thank God for the abundance He has given us and we pray that we use those resources wisely.  May we continue to live out our mission of "Faith, Love, Health and Service" in 2017.  Contact  Melinda Lilley if you have any questions.

Church Work Party
January 21
Please join us for a church work party on Saturday, January 21 from 8:30am to noon.  Aldersgate has a large, beautiful property which takes many volunteers to maintain.  Please come when you can Saturday morning and lend a hand.  We will work INDOORS!

Lost & Found
Have you lost something? The Lost and Found items are displayed on the table in the narthex.  There is a pair of boots, kid's clothes, bakeware, travel mugs, a tote bag, red socks, etc.  Please check out the table and claim your stuff.  Unclaimed items will be donated to Goodwill in February.

Parenting Forum : Bubble Wrap Not Required
February 7th from 7pm - 8:30pm
Every parent wants their child to grow, to experience and to live life fully, but every parent also wants their child to be safe.  Join us for this one evening seminar covering how parents can help their children stay safe while they are learning and exploring!  During, Bubble Wrap Not Required, Sara Fenstermacher, RN, MSN, CPN, and Clinical Nurse Specialist in the Emergency Department at Seattle Children's, will show parents how to promote growth AND prevent injury.  Fenstermacher will share several strategies to help keep your children safe from babyhood through the teen years.

Helpers Wanted
Like to chit-chat?  Like to sew?  Like to iron?  Have a bit of spare time on Friday mornings?  If you answered "yes" to at least two of these, then,   YOU are needed!!!  Aldersgate's long-time group of quilters (sometimes referred to as the Merry Quilters) have announced that they may have to pack away their sewing machines and give up!   This group of dedicated ladies through the years have dwindled to only 2 or 3, not enough to keep making all those beautiful handmade items that are sold at the bake sale or given on special occasions. Through their efforts, hundreds of dollars are earned annually in sales and then donated to various charities. So c an you help?  No need to commit to EVERY Friday, no need to be a terrific sewer, just a willingness to help them as much as you can....and enjoy their terrific company at the same time.  You will not be bored!   Contact Lea Fox or stop by the church on a Friday morning and talk with them.  They'll be so glad you did!  But hurry!  They're already looking for packing boxes!

Youth SUMYT Retreat
March 17-19
It is time to CLICK HERE for more information and to register for the SUMYT retreat.  The SUMYT retreat, one of the most popular events of the year, is for youth in grades 6-12 and is hosted at Camp Indianola, March 17-19.  The theme this year is CATCHING FIRE.  By the way, four of our own serve on the planning team - youth Bryce, Jacob and Oliver, and Patty Ferguson as an adult leader.
PLEASE do not pay by credit card but instead choose the PAY BY CHECK option.  Aldersgate will be paying $50 of everyone's registration fee, so to make this easier the church will be writing one check for all registration fees.  Checks for your portion of the registration ($70/youth) can be written to Aldersgate with SUMYT in the memo line.

Mission & Outreach

MLK Project Update
Aldersgate UMC was 40 strong at our MLK Day of Caring service event at Eastside Baby Corner in Issaquah.  We worked side by side sorting and organizing clothing and toys for kids in need in our community.  It was a great day to come together as members of Aldersgate to serve our community.  The Eastside Baby Corner services approximately 800 kids per week from several different organizations such as Hopelink and several area school districts.  For more information about their organization visit their website at  www.babycorner.org.
