John 4:1-42
Sermon :     "To Be Known and L oved"

This Sunday
In Biblical times, the well was the source of life for ancient people. Water represented the connection between people and the connection to the Earth. This day we celebrate our connections with other Protestants on the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. There are lots of Biblical stories about wells. Jacob met his wife Rachel at the well in Genesis. Moses met his wife, Zipporah, the daughter of Reul, at the well in Exodus. The well story was a well-known euphemism for a courtship. Not only does Jesus sit down in broad daylight when no one would normally be at the well, hoping for help drawing water. He sits down at the well and talks to the first person who happens by, who happens to be a Samaritan, and a woman by herself. Jesus meets this woman as a suitor would meet her. However his purpose is different. His purpose is not to take her for his wife. Instead, he offers her love, to be sure, but not the love of a husband for a wife. This is the love of God for the woman. To be loved is to be known.  Jesus knows us, loves us, and calls us. We may feel unworthy. We may be undignified. We may not feel like we fit in at church. We may not fit the mold of what "church people" are. Jesus knows us and calls us in love.

MINISTRY NEWS
Church Work Party
Saturday, October 28
Please  join us for a church work party on Saturday October 28 from 9:00am-12:00pm. We will work outside raking, weeding, pruning, etc.  Bring your gloves and gardening tools.  Families and kids are welcome.  Aldersgate has a large, beautiful property which takes many volunteers to maintain. Please come when you can Saturday morning and lend a hand.  Please sign up on Sunday's attendance from or contact Dave Carver, DECarver@gmail.com. P.S.-Dave promises no rain.
CPR/AED Class
Saturday, November 4
A CPR/AED (Automated External Defibrillator) class will be held here at the church on Saturday November 4 from 9:00am to 11:30am.  The class will teach current CPR procedures and use of our AED.  A certification will be awarded to those who attend and demonstrate correct procedures.  Note; certifications from the previous class expire this November.  Attendance will provide life saving knowledge in the event of sudden cardiac arrest or heart attack. Church staff, nursery workers, and ushers are strongly urged to attend.  Other folks may also attend if there is room in the class.  if you are interested in attending, please sign up on Sunday's attendance form or contact the church office.
Worship Brainstorming Party/Potluck
Saturday, November 4
Have you ever wondered how the planning process for our worship services works? Have you ever wished you could let someone know what works for you in worship? Do you have great suggestions for hymns, songs, prayers, visuals for use in worship, or anything else related to  Sunday  morning (either service)? If so, this party is for you! On  Saturday November 4 , from  12-2pm  we will preview the themes for worship in January and brainstorm some great ideas for the Epiphany Season. The hope is to gather so many ideas that we can't use them all  in one year  so get ready to imagine together. Also, bring a lunch item to share with those who gather. If you have questions, contact Pastor Laura.
All Saints Day
Sunday, November 5
On Sunday, November 5 at both services we will remember and honor all the people we have loved and released to God through death in the hope of new life. We invite you who have lost loved ones since last All Saints' Sunday (November 6, 2016) to fill out the Sunday attendance form with your loved one's name and relationship to you. These names will be spoken, a candle lit for each one, we will give thanks for them, and pray for us all as we continue to work through our grief and seek renewed confidence and peace in the promises of Christ Jesus.
Dinner, Common Table & Charge Conference
November  6
The next Aldersgate Common Table will be on Monday, November 6 in Fellowship Hall.  Come at 6:30pm for a light Church Supper - a bowl of hearty soup and bread!  The meeting will start at 7:00pm. This gathering is for everyone who wants to have a voice in the life of the church.  The staff and core leaders will host this year's church charge conference.  This will be an official business meeting of the church, where we share information and take care of important decisions related to policy, finance, and organization of our congregation.     Everyone is welcome to attend.   Free childcare is available if you sign up for it in advance. Please sign up on Sunday's attendance form or contact the church office.
Quarterly Statements
Quarterly contribution statements were sent to you by regular mail last Monday and you should have received them by now.  A computer glitch beyond our control prevented us from emailing them to you.  If you have questions about your statement, please contact Wendi in the church office.
