Series: "The 'I Am' Statements of Jesus"

Sermon:   "Gifts of Darkness, Gifts of Light "

Scripture Lesson: John 8:12

This Sunday, we turn back to John 8:12 to consider the I AM statement there, "I am the light of the world."  We'll consider the beauty in both the dark and the light.  We'll wrestle with the lessons that we learn and the ways we meet God in the dark and in the light.  We'll also consider what kind of light Jesus shines into darkness.  We'll consider how we are called to shine light and to experience dark.  We'll ask what the Lenten experience is of darkness and light.

Specifically during this final week in Black History Month, we'll talk about race.  Some of us have darker skin or lighter skin.  Jesus and the gospel writer John didn't intend to make a statement about skin color when they referred to dark and light.  However, sometimes the metaphorical language of dark and light gets personal in our context.  Darker skinned people have been, and often still are, treated differently than lighter skinned people partly because of oppression that came from within the Christian church.  We are people of the great I AM, which means that we are people called to truth and justice.  The sermon this week will challenge us to seek and find justice in our context of dark and light.

Pastor Laura will begin a new adult small group to work through the Way of Discernment volume from  he Companions in Christ series. The group will meet on Sunday evenings from 6:00-8:00pm, beginning March 4 and run for approximately 3 months. If you are interested in a copy of the book, see Pastor Laura or order one from an online retailer. Used copies are available for about $10. All are welcome. Come when you can. Don't stay away just because you can't be there every week.
UMW Special Mission Award
The United Methodist Women (UMW) of Aldersgate are requesting nominations for the Special Mission Award. Any person in the church is eligible for this award based on service to the church and the community but special attention is given to those who participate in or support UMW and their mission projects. Please complete this nomination form and return the form to Kathy Maybee's church mailbox by March 4, 2018.  The form includes a list of former recipients of the award.
Update from Green Team: Waste-Free events
The last few all church events have been great examples of reducing our contribution to the landfill from meals at church. We've been composting and recycling more and throwing less away. As you have heard, the cups and plates we use are compostable. There is plenty of dinner ware that is washable and we are getting better about how to sort it all out. What you may not know is that recycle and compost is free for the church, but we pay for our landfill contributions. So the more we can compost and recycle, the less it costs us financially, not to mention the less impact it makes on the planet. Keep up the good work. Take the challenge to make your next event at church free of landfill waste!
Mission Sunday on Earth Day
April 22 will be Mission Sunday this year and the Green Team will be helping to design a decidedly green way to be in mission in our community. If you have ideas, suggestions, or want to be part of a particular team, see Pastor Laura or anyone on Green Team.
Ushers Needed - BOTH Service
More ushers are GREATLY needed at both services.  The duties are simple: to greet people and pass out bulletins, to assist visitors and help them find a seat, to light and extinguish the altar candles, to collect and store the offering, to take a headcount, and then tidy the sanctuary after the service.  The ushers work a rotating schedule and with enough ushers, that would mean helping once every 4-6 weeks.  Can YOU help?  If so please sign up on Sunday's attendance form OR for the first service contact David James, hdjames2@juno.com and for the second service contact the church office.
Staff Liaisons
Do you want to find ways to honor and support an Aldersgate staff member? Are you willing to meet with a staff member once a month to see how they are doing and pray for them regularly? Would you be willing to work with them if they were having a concern regarding the church? As our Core Leaders Team (CLT) transitions more fully to a Single Board Governance model and the functions of what used to fall under Staff Parish Relations (SPR) Committee now fall with CLT, the staff liaisons that SPR once provided need to be handled differently. We are looking for one lay member of the congregation for each of our 17 staff members who is willing to serve in this role. It's a great way to get to know a staff member better. It's a great way to serve your church. It's a great way to grow in your faith. Win-Win-Win. See Pastor Laura if you are interested in helping with this important ministry. Pastor Laura will provide guidance for these positions and will make sure that each liaison is well-matched with a staff member.
Sound Help Wanted
Sound operators are needed for both the 9:00am and the 11:00am.  Training will be provided.  For more information, please email Tom Blakney  or call him at 206-310-6296.

Camp Sunday a Success!
We want to send a HUGE THANK YOU out to all of you for your part in making Aldersgate's Camp Sunday and Taco Bar Lunch a huge success. We appreciate your flexibility with figuring out the worship service and handling changes right up to the end. We appreciate every onion chopped along with all the other amazing food that was prepped, served and cleaned up. We appreciate the sharing of stories about camp and learning about what is all taking place at our Methodist camps. We appreciate each and every one of you and your dedication to the camping ministry and to Aldersgate. It is a powerful day when you hear real lifesaving stories of a thriving ministry. It is a blessing to share with all of you that over $1189 was given towards Camperships last Sunday. Aldersgate will make a donation to the district campership fund as well as replenishing our own campership fund. Thank you for your part in Camp Sunday. It was a fun yet deeply meaningful service. We have already heard from kids and families who are planning in taking advantage of our amazing Methodist Camps this summer.

From Our Missionary in Nepal, Katherine Parker
Dear friends at Aldersgate UMC,
Thank you for your continued and sustaining prayer and financial support for my work as a United Methodist Missionary in Nepal. I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of generosity in 2017, which enables our church to send missionaries from everywhere to everywhere. I want to acknowledge the 2017 gifts of $2,000 from you and your congregation, Aldersgate United Methodist Church of Bellevue. Thank you!

UMW Funds Dispersed
The United Methodist Women Bake Sale in December netted over $1400. At least $550 was from craft items donated by church members.  A huge thanks to all who baked, worked and donated crafts and, of course, to those who bought these items. We couldn't have been this successful without all of you!

Recently the UMW members from Mary Martha and Deborah Circles met to decide where to donate this money.  Recipients this year are Sophia Way, Congregations for Kids (in Bellevue School District), Friends of Youth (including Griffin Home, Renton) and Days for Girls (Jo Fritze and Jennifer Ting).  Our UMW was also able to meet their annual pledge to the District.
