Busy  & Fun Summer at AYAM!!
Tall Tales & Art
 We began the summer
with a successful return of Tall Tales & Art. Under the direction of SBISD art teacher Mary Traveras, a team of teachers led the children in a fun story time followed by an art project based on that story. We saw everything from tropical fish and cave drawings to paper plate monsters.
We hosted close to 300 children and their parents and a great time was had by all!

Big Changes in the Galleries

Once Tall Tales was over, we began our big project for the summer, rearranging and updating the exhibits. Several of our board members, under the direction of Marianne Van Arkel-Priest began the daunting task of going through our existing displays along with the vast collection that was stored in our vault. With Mrs. Priest vast knowledge of museum studies and art history, we brought out some amazing artifacts from Mrs. Yeargin's travels all over the world to add to our displays. Well over 100 new items that were stored away now have a prominent place for all to enjoy.  Each of our 3 galleries tells a story of not only art but cultural history from around the world. Please make plans to stop by soon.

1st Saturday Family Events
Houston's own Artists
This year's AYAM's 1st Saturday events will focus on the amazing artists we have right here in our own city.

We will kick off the year with renown artist and writer
Jose Perez. In addition to the family event on Saturday Oct.5, AYAM will also host an open house Oct. 2 for the community showcasing his dramatic artwork and his ability to weave a story thru that art.
Please make plans to attend.

Capital of Texas
Ornament Decorating Contest

AYAM is honored to be able to participate in state Representative Jim Murphy's  holiday ornament decorating contest. Every year the Speaker of the House organizes the Lone Star Christmas Tree that is displayed in the House of Representatives chamber in the Capitol in Austin. Each Representative submits an ornament to hang on the tree. Team Murphy invites you to participate in our 2nd Annual Ornament Decorating Contest for our district's contribution. The 2013 theme is "Fun and Games on the Buffalo Bayou." The "winning" ornament goes to Austin to hang on the Lone Star Christmas Tree and the remaining ornaments will be hung on the Christmas tree in Memorial City Mall. Individuals of all ages, organizations, schools and businesses are welcome to participate. In exchange for a contest-authorized ornament to decorate, and in the spirit of the season, we encourage a donation of unopened toiletries (toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, bar soap) that Team Murphy will give to Memorial Assistance Ministries (MAM).
As part of the contest, AYAM will be hosting two ornament decorating events. The first decorating event will be for adults on Tuesday evening, Sept. 24 (7:00pm until 9:00pm). The second event will be a family event on Saturday morning, Sept. 28 (10:00am until noon). Basic supplies will be provided but bring your own creative ideas and additional supplies. Beginning September 9, 2013,  contest participants may pick up ornament kits (while supply lasts), as well as drop-off their MAM donations at Memorial City Mall's Guest Services or at AYAM during regular business hours. Completed ornaments are due to either of these locations by Oct.17th.
**Contact Deanna Harrington for additional details or if you have a group who would like to participate. ([email protected])
