What fun is was to be able to attend the Big Sky Handbell Conference in Hamilton, Montana last weekend. There wasn't a moment to rest as Jason Wells took the music from mere printed notes to musical memories. That is one of the reasons this newsletter is a few days late. I was also on tour and didn't arrive home until May 1. There are still a couple of events coming up this spring. Perhaps you can attend the final concert.

Notes from the Chair ...
For many of us, May means winding down our handbell year. My church program suspends for the summer, and to be honest, by now most of us are ready for the break. Spring seems to be a busy time with concerts and/or festivals, so the thought of time off is welcome.
However, for those of us in the sacred world, should we leave our congregations without bells all summer? For those with community groups, would some summer activity help our continuity?
Ringing over the summer presents multiple challenges. I know in my situation, everyone including me seems to split to the four winds in the summer. Whether for time at the lake, vacations with family, summer sports camps, etc, etc; everyone has things that take them away during the summer, especially on weekends. It is difficult to get people together to ring on a Sunday, much less find time to prepare.
This summer I hope to make an effort. It requires some thinking outside the box, but I believe it will be worth it. First of all, as a director, I don't get to ring very often, so it will give me a chance to actually put my hands on the bells. Maybe I'll work up a solo - don't need to coordinate schedules for that. I'm lucky to have another ringer in my house - my daughter and I could work up a duet. Hmmm, maybe bells and bell tree. She plays violin - maybe bells and violin. We did that at Christmas, why not for summer?
There are always 12 bell arrangements or quartets. If you can grab a few people instead of your whole group, this is a great way to go. It is good to have ringers try new positions, or cover more than two bells for a change! There is getting to be more and more music available for smaller groups. It must mean more of us are in the same boat.
So I encourage you to not give up bells totally for the summer. Play for a least one worship service. Play for that concert in the park series. Maybe just get folks together for ice cream and read some new titles. Give yourself a break and rest, for sure, but see the opportunities as well.

18th International Handbell Symposium -
Rogue Ringers International 2018!
We have a few spots for AD HOC ringers in our choir. The event will be held in Cairns, Australia August 6-11.

will be playing familiar tunes including a medley from Carmen, pop hits by Abba and Simon & Garfunkel, and many other amazing compositions. This concert will feature the two ensembles in a bit of friendly competition as they "duel" as well as in unison as they "dance."

Monday - Saturday, August 6-11 - Come ring in Christian fellowship on the beautiful Oregon Coast at Camp Magruder. We welcome ringers of all ability levels, offering technical workshops that will prepare for a final performance. There will also be plenty of time to relax and recharge while walking the green forests or the beautiful beach. Registration covers accommodations, meals from our wonderful chefs, clinician-led bell programs, and a music packet. There will be many reasons to make a joyful noise all week long. Clinician is Linda Woods from Lake Oswego, Oregon.
