GYSD Martin Cheerleaders

Global Youth Service Day is Saturday, April 16. That's the day youth groups will cover Arlington from east to west, north to south, performing all sorts of service-learning projects from cleaning yards and painting houses to conducting financial literacy workshops and running road races to raise money.

To date, 75 groups representing more than 3,000 youth have registered to participate in the largest service event in the world. At Martin High School, one of the more unique projects will take place.

The Gollywhopper Games is a Math Carnival. Students will set up booths and participants will be able to partake in math games in a carnival-like atmosphere for students in kindergarten through sixth grade. For instance, the basketball teams from Martin High School, Young Junior High and Boles Junior High will have an inflatable basketball challenge while the cheerleaders create a lolli-pop wheel of math equations.

The Upward Bound Math and Science Program  will develop an activity booklet for senior citizens to cover subjects and activities relating to literature, math, science and technology. Workman Junior High School Soccer Clubs will come together at Cedar Hill State Park to clean up and learn about the importance of protecting natural areas.

A Big `Thank You' Celebration at Levitt

Thank You Celebration Kids

Once the groups have completed their service projects they will converge on the Levitt Pavilion at Founder's Plaza in downtown Arlington for a big "Thank You Celebration," beginning at 11:30 a.m.

A City of Arlington proclamation by the Mayor and City Council will be read, awards will be handed out, and musician Paul Demer of Second Story Feedback will provide the entertainment on the Levitt main stage.

"We'll feed them, entertain them, and thank them for all their hard work," said Arlington Alliance for Youth Board Member Marc Marchand. "This is an opportunity for everyone to be recognized. Some will use this as their lunch break from their projects. Come, eat, celebrate and go back and work in the afternoon."

Youth groups will be interviewed on AISD-TV where they will get a chance to share the stories behind their projects. "It's an amazing time," said Marchand.

Lights, Camera, Loads of Action!
Robert Spence

Every year, as part of Global Youth Service Day, AISD-TV produces a segment on its Conversations program all about the big day. After service projects have been completed, coalition groups line up for one-on-one interviews about their projects.

AISD and City of Arlington staff serve as interview hosts, giving youths the opportunity to talk about the impact of their volunteer work on the community. The program is recorded and replayed on AISD TV.

"It's great exposure for the people working on the projects" said AISD-TV producer Robert Spence, who has been filming the youth groups for about four years. "They get a little TV time."
