Title: Program Evaluator

Time at ArtWorks: I have been consulting for Artworks since May 14th, 2012.

What do you actually do: My primary job is to improve Artworks capacity to identify, align and communicate how Artworks program activities produce Artworks desired program outcomes. I do this by conducting a series of interviews with staff members, creating models that capture the data Artworks needs to make determinations, and by teaching the staff to use those models.

Your favorite part of working at ArtWorks: Getting valuable experience helping one of Cincinnati's greatest Arts organizations! Applying the tools of evaluation to address the needs of the arts sector.

One interesting fact about yourself: I am also an NAACP award winning playwright, and a multi-award winning arts educator.

ArtWorks Believes That Art Works

Greetings!

This morning, the National Endowment for the Arts announced the 80 recipients of this year's Our Town grants. As stated by the NEA, "Through Our Town, the NEA supports creative placemaking projects that help transform communities into lively, beautiful, and sustainable places with the arts at their core. The grantee projects will improve quality of life, encourage creative activity, create community identity and a sense of place, and help revitalize local economies." If you haven't yet guessed, ArtWorks was one of the winners of this grant!

ArtWorks, in partnership with the City of Cincinnati, will be commissioning a series of site-specific public artworks to be incorporated into the streetscape redesign in the historic Pendleton neighborhood. Cincinnati is one of only two cities to be honored with an Our Town grant this year - and ArtWorks can't wait to get started on this placemaking project that will highlight the cultural, economic and social significance of Pendleton's past, present and future! We are especially looking forward to working with the Pendleton Community Council, the Pendleton Art Center, and neighborhood businesses to create work that really speaks to the spirit and history of Pendleton.

Keep your eyes peeled in the coming months for more information on the progression of this exciting project.

The Coolest Cats
West Price Hill

The road to creating an ArtWorks mural is not always a smooth one, as learned by the team working on the West Price Hill Mural. Early on in the process, panels from the scaffolding that the team works on were stolen by thieves in the night! But Jamie Schorsch's determined group was undeterred! The team has taken a number of tours throughout the neighborhood and to Price Hill Historical Society, familiarizing themselves with the community's history and culture. They've even managed to befriend a few of the adorable cats taking up residence in the Animal Hospital that is host to the new mural! Things were getting pretty hot outside, which caused delays for pretty much all of our projects, but when the temperature was bearable, this cool crew set up some umbrellas and a pool and started laying some colored paint on the walls.

Downtown Court

ArtWorks is creating its largest mural to date by painting two conjoining walls for the Downtown Mural on Court Street. The project is being led by ArtWorks All -Star Jenny Ustick but the design is based on the painting "Homecoming (Bluebirds)" by late, great Cincinnati-based artist Charley Harper. The mural team took a tour of Harper Studios, familiarizing themselves with the man's work and his legacy. Then it was time to work! The Apprentices slathered on multiple layers of plain gesso before adding a layer of blue tinted gesso to the walls. Now they are taking very meticulous measurements to ensure that their geometric line drawings will be perfect - ensuring that this reproduction of Harper's work would make him proud.

Bellevue

Bellevue is joining Newport and Covington on the growing list of Northern Kentucky cities getting the ArtWorks mural treatment! The Bellevue Mural Project is being created as a part of the Taft Museum of Art's 80th Anniversary Celebration: Art for All. The mural's design, by Project Manager Scott Donaldson, is inspired by a number of works featured in the Taft's collection. The mural team has been painting at an impressive rate - making rapid progress on the Rembrandt-inspired portion of the mural and on the brilliant orange curtain. On July 6th, the team hosted an Open House, where members of the Bellevue community - including the mayor - stopped by to congratulate them on their impressive work!

Apprentice Interview: AnnieSpinnenweber

ArtWorks: Employ. Engage. Create. Transform.

Today we're celebrating the West Price Hill Mural - check out these new pictures - and here's an Apprentice interview with 17-year-old Roger Bacon student Annie Spinnenweber to fill in some of the details behind the photos.

What other summer jobs have you had? How did they compare to ArtWorks?

I haven't had any other summer jobs, but Artworks is a great first.

Describe the West Price Hill Mural. What's the design like? What's been the best part about working on this mural? What's been the most challenging part?

The Price Hill Mural's design is mostly focused on the green space and the architecture of the area. The best part of working on the mural is probably the fact that I'm contributing to something that is making an area beautiful. The most challenging part of this mural is the fact it's in direct sunlight all day, so it makes it beyond difficult to blend the paint.

Why do you think public art is necessary?
