When the Scaffolding's Gone

Greetings!

scaffold

It's this moment: The moment when the last piece of scaffolding gets removed from a mural. The art itself seems to sigh with relief as the artist follows behind the construction crew to do touch-ups on the places where the scaffolding blocked or affected parts of the oversized canvas. The art is free to be seen complete and whole.

It's this moment: The first time you walk by that mural down the street and realize the scaffolding is gone, the workers are gone, and there's nothing between you and the final project, standing in all its glory. Your eyes light up a bit, you smile, take out your camera for a quick picture.

It's this moment: A 16 year old wallflower suddenly realizes she has a voice. She looks at the amazing work of art she helped create, sees the gratitude and appreciation in the faces of a community, and realizes she can make a difference - she can help to transform the world around her.

It's these moments - and many more like it - that make the end of an ArtWorks' summer so exciting. There's a little sadness. Teams go their separate ways, back to their various schools and neighborhoods. But the outcomes of their work are here to stay.

We want to hear from you. Send us an e-mail or give us a call and tell us what moments keep you supporting ArtWorks - which projects have you most excited. We also want to see you. Our first mural dedication is August 17th in Evendale. See below for more details. Take a moment from your day and celebrate what these artists have done!

Orange You Sad it's Almost Over?

Downtown (Central Pkwy)First time ArtWorks Project Manager Jonathan Queen has had his team of Apprentices busy creating a refreshing, vibrant mural on the wall of the Kroger headquarters. Our Downtown Mural (Central Pkwy), a celebration of Kroger's history and devotion to fresh fruits and vegetables, is now nearly complete! A small band of the team will continue to work on the mural in the coming week, adding the final magical details that will make the art seem as if it's popping off of the wall!

Mt AdamsThe Mt. Adams Mural project is slightly different from the rest of our murals. Not being content to paint directly onto the wall, this team led by Tina Westerkamp has been painting on parachute cloth in a studio which will then be installed onto the wall. (You won't believe it wasn't painted on directly!) Additionally, the mural will contain tile and mosaics, creating a truly three-dimensional effect. But that's not all. They have also embedded miniature sculptures into a nearby stone wall, creating a true artistic path through the neighborhood.

CorryvilleBack in the '80s, a group of students painted a colorful mural that celebrated Cincinnati's diverse and talented youth! Over the years the paint began to fade and chip. Two of those youth, Adrienne and Althea Thompson, have returned to lead a new generation of young artists to create a new Wall of Education in Corryville. Being created in partnership with ProKids and Cincinnati Public Schools, this mural hopes to inspire youth to imagine and realize their dreams! The Apprentice Artists working on the mural seem to be doing an excellent job at that, making a tremendous amount of progress on this project in just a short amount of time.

OakleyProject Manager Tammy Stephens will be spending the week adding just a few more finishing touches on the Oakley Mural. This triptych mural was created in partnership with locally-owned Loesch Hardware and features scenes of life and business in the neighborhood. Her team painted vigorously for five weeks - creating a wonderful work of art that will serve as a true neighborhood marker for years to come!
