Greetings!

ArtWorks: Employ. Engage. Create. Transform.

And so it begins. The 2012 ArtWorks Summer Program is off to a roaring start with 14 projects currently underway. We are excited to say that we will be creating a total of 15 projects this summer, including 10 murals. These murals will bring us steps closer to reaching our goal of having an ArtWorks Mural Program mural in every Cincinnati neighborhood! Once the summer is complete, our grand total will be 56 murals in 32 Cincinnati neighborhoods and 5 nearby cities.

Murals aren't the only exciting public projects we have in store for the summer. We have a team of Apprentices creating edible art and earth sculpture along Mill Creek, a team working on a photography based installation, another team decorating a drift of Big Pigs, another crew of Apprentices are creating stage designs, and another group is turning children receiving medical treatment into superheroes.

ArtWorks: Employ. Engage. Create. Transform.
Probably more exciting than the art, are the artists. We've hired 115 incredible Apprentice Artists and 32 Professional Artists for the summer. They're all geared up and eager to make art work for Greater Cincinnati! Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter to see all of the latest pictures and hear the fun stories about their adventures in art!

And don't forget that it's never too late for you to help us to make art work! Give today and help support Cincinnati's artistic talent as they help to make Cincinnati beautiful.

Under Construction
Last September, ArtWorks was awarded funds from ArtPlace, a collaboration of eleven of the nation's top foundations, eight federal agencies including the National Endowment for the Arts, and six of the nation's largest banks, who came together to invest in creative placemaking efforts around the country.

This grant was awarded to support SpringBoard and the creation of a new collaborative work space at the ArtWorks offices that will be home to classes, round tables, ongoing mentorships and other activities that will help Cincinnati's creative sector to grow and thrive.

Please join us to celebrate! This is your chance to visit our new space, meet SpringBoard entrepreneurs and celebrate our first year of sparking creative enterprise.

Finding Art on Palms, Stage, Walls, and Plants
Cincinnati Constellation

ArtWorks is super excited to be working in conjunction with FOTOFOCUS to create Cincinnati Constellation! For this project, ArtWorks imported guest artist/photographer, Caleb Charland to help orchestrate this creation inspired by one of his earlier works. A team of 9 Apprentice Artists will be working with Lead Artist Peiter Griga and Teaching Artist Sheida Soleimani to draw dots on the palm prints of hundreds of Cincinnatians and then digitally scan the palms. The resulting image will be altered and manipulated to the point that it resembles a starry sky. All of these images will be collected, printed on fabric, and hung from the rafters of Findlay Market this October. Want to be a part of the art? Stop by Findlay Market (and a number of other locations!) on Saturdays and Sundays between 10 am and 4 pm to seek out this stellar team! They will be there every weekend from now until July.

Newport

5 Apprentice Artists have been working under the astute guidance of Lead Artist Kenton Brett on Stage Crew, our annual partnership with the Children's Theatre of Cincinnati. This team has been creating props and backdrops for the Children's Theatre's ArtReach program, in which high-quality theatrical productions are presented to schools and young audiences around the tri-state. So far, our Apprentices have experimented with paint, repainted trees for The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and created a foam stone for The Sword in the Stone. (Anyone who stops by the scene shop during the break may see them staging impromptu, improvised scenes using some of the props, as well.) They're going to take a break for the 4th of July holiday, but after that it's back to work on scenic creations for three more shows!

Hamilton

Evendale is the newest city to be added to ArtWorks' growing list of mural locations! Working in conjunction with the Evendale Cultural Arts Center, ArtWorks assembled a team of 3 Apprentice Artists to work with Lead Artist Jodi Kessler on not one, but two murals being painted on the front of the center. These two mural designs were created by famed local illustrator C. F. Payne (whose work you may recognize from last year's "The Singing Mural"). The team has already finished work on the first mural and have moved on to starting on the second. At this rate, the Evendale Murals will be complete before you finish reading this sentence!

HamiltonThe Edible Arts project is an interesting first for ArtWorks. Melody Wolf is leading a team of 5 Apprentice Artists as they create edible art and earth sculpture for the Mill Creek Greenway Trail. This project is being created in partnership with the Mill Creek Restoration Project. The team has been playing in the dirt again, weeding, building earth mounds, planting in the edible garden, and creating a spiral path from stones. They've also taken the time to learn some plant identification and to photograph and critique their own progress! This is going to be a visually and gustatorily pleasing outcome for visitors to Mill Creek.

Star Power

ArtWorks: Employ. Engage. Create. Transform.Over here at ArtWorks, we're always seeking to bring our city together in bigger, better, and more beautiful ways. We're collaborating with Portland-based artist Caleb Charland this summer in order to do just that. Caleb is joining the ArtWorks team as visionary artist on our Cincinnati Constellations project, which is itself in partnership with FotoFocus, a Cincinnati-wide project celebrating photography. Caleb, whose art frequently involves experimentation with physics and light, is bringing all of his skills to bear on Cincinnati Constellations: the project will result in a public art piece that takes scans of Cincinnatian's palms and graphically manipulates them to look like the starry night sky. In order to provide a little insight into this summer's star guest, for this Wednesday's artist interview I asked Caleb a few questions about his work, life, and vision.
