Greetings!
Springtime for most people usually means some sort of spring cleaning or home improvement project, and that's certainly the case at Athens Habitat. We've done some organizing of our own at the ReStore and if you haven't stopped in lately, I encourage you to do so and check out the unique furniture and art that we receive on a daily basis.
We're also staying busy this spring, nearing completion on 110 and 120 Carpenter's Circle and leasing all available units in our apartments on East Broad Street. Our staff and volunteers are working hard to finish renovations on the remaining units in the coming weeks.
The work we do has helped Habitat for Humanity International rank as the SIXTH LARGEST HOMEBUILDER on Builder magazine's top 100 list. With 6,032 closings in 2010, this is the second time Habitat for Humanity has placed in the top 10. Check it out at http://www.builderonline.com/builder100/.
Until next time,
Spencer Frye Executive Director

Spotlight On...

John Songster
John Songster (above, left) became a dedicated volunteer with Athens Area Habitat soon after moving to Athens in 2004. His untiring, hands-on leadership has helped to bring to fruition many houses and building initiatives serving Clarke, Oconee and Oglethorpe counties.
John spent 6 years as a USAF Transport Pilot and then 35 years in the development and manufacturing of high-tech electronics for commercial aircraft and weapons systems for the military. He learned about construction through the remodeling of his own homes over the years, as well as self-study, his experience with Athens Habitat and advice from one of his sons, who is a local building contractor.
John and his wife, Nancy, have been married for more than 50 years and have three children and four grandchildren. "Getting to work along side and know the homeowners and witnessing the commitment and pride associated with being able to own their own home" is just one reason John loves to volunteer with Athens Habitat.
We are most grateful for his unselfish service of more than 1,000 hours/year to the community. He is a very valuable asset to our volunteer force.
For more on how you can get involved, email us at volunteer@athenshabitat.com. |
